This invention relates to rolling eyes with lashes, the invention being particularly, though not necessarily exclusively, directed to the provision of an improved eye set for dolls.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, efiicient and practical arrangement of parts whereby the eye set will include eyes movable not only to open and closed position but also from side to side, and in which an eyelash member is present arranged to move to open and closed position.
A further and more detailed object is to provide improved and simplified means for holding the eyelash membersin appropriate position with respect to the eye shells, and to provide bumper parts in association therewith for limiting movement of the whole.
A further detailed object is to so construct the parts as to provide for all necessary manual adjustment of the eyes whereby they may be made to correctly fit in operative position in a given doll head.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, ar-
rangements of parts and applications of prin ciples constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which we have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention I Fig. 1 is a rear elevational View of an eye set constructed in accordance with this invention, being shown partly in vertical section, and in association with the representation of a doll head also appearing in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken upon the plane of line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings for describing in detail the structure illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates an ordinary .tion of. Samuel Marcus,
which is supported by its mid section through the medium of a suitable supporting carrier as 4 through which it passes and which is in turn connected with the material of the doll head intermediate the eye openings 1 and 2.
The form of cross rod support indicated corresponds in general with the structure show and described in the pending applica- Serial No. 163,610, though it will of course be understood that any other appropriate form of cross rod support may be employed as may be found most suitable.
At one end of the cross rod is a connector member 5 by which the adjacent eye shell is connected with the cross rod, and at the opposite end of the cross rod a similar connector member as 6 is arranged for connecting the second eye shell with the cross rod. These connector members are of the general form as shown and described in the pending application of Samuel Marcus and Alexander Konoif, Serial No. 216,530, in that they each consist of a body part 7 having a central openupper and lower ends of the body 7 suitable pivot extensions as 12 and 13 engagewithin bearing apertures as ltand 15 respectively of the eye shell and thereby constitute a pivotal mounting for the eye shell upon a vertical axis, these pivot parts being so positionedthat the pivotal axis will intersect the spherical centre of the eye shell.

Any appropriate expedient may be resorted to for permitting the necessary extent of sidewise pivotal movement of the eye shells without interference from the cross rod, but as clearly seen in Fig. 2 it is suggested that the portions of the cross rod which stand adjacent the rear edge parts of the eye shells may be looped backwardly, as at 19 and 20 to thus r provide the required clearance, said parts incidentally also serving, when engaged by the edge parts of the eye shell when fully thrown, to limit the sidewise movement of the eye shells.
By reason of the fact that the cross rod is pivotally mounted in the supporting carrier 4; in axial alignment with the spherical centres of the eye shells it follows that the weight 18 also constitutes a gravity control for swinging the eyes between open and closed positions, this movement being of course about a horizontal axis longitudinally of the cross rod.
A stop member as 21 is provided for limiting the open and closed positions of the eyes. This member consists of a strip of material, which is preferably. spring metal,
fixed by its mid portion to one of the connector members and having its lower end part as at 21 pro ecting below the eye arranged to engage an interior surface portion of the head for limiting the open movement of the eyes and having its upper end as at 23 projecting above the eye arranged to engage a different surface portion of the head for limiting the closed position of the eye.
There maybe a bumper device of this character connected with each eye as shown if desired.
The eyelash member for each eye is indicated by the reference character 24. It is connected to and projects below the lower edge of a sem ispherical shell ,part 25 which overlies the upper portion of the ,eye shell and is shaped and colored in its exposed portion to represent an eyelid in the customary and appropriate position with respect to the iris picture which it will be understood is of course carried by the eye shell.
This eyelid member and the eyelash sup ported thereby is provided with a rearwardly extending strip 26 which continues to the rear of the eye shell and extends downwardly across the open rear side of the shell, being fixed to the connector member 7 so as to move with said connector member at all times, from which it will be apparent that whenever the doll is moved between upright and reclining positions the gravity acting weight 18 will swing both the eye shell and the lid, with the eyelash, correspondingly between open and closed positions, while i when the doll is tipped. from side to side the weight will swing the eye shell from side to side without imparting a corresponding movement to the eyelid or lash.
The manner of connecting the eyelid members and the bumper members with the connector members may take any appropriate form. In the instance illustrated the connection is accomplished by providing a plurality of tangs as 27 and 28 projecting rear wardly from each connector member, being inserted through mating openings in the respective eyelid and bumper members, and being clinched down over therear surface of said members so that in effect the several parts are firmly riveted together.
It is noteworthy that the bumper members are adapted for adjustment by bending so that they will strike against opposing parts of the doll head at proper times. The parts 23 have reduced portions as 29 for facilitating bending of said parts 23, while the parts 22 have off-set sections as 30 for facilitating the bending adjustment of said parts Bending adjustment of either of these parts will in no wise interfere with any other part of the eye set structure. 2 i

An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a support by which the eyes are mounted to swing upon a horizontal axis, connecting members carried by the support and pivot-ally engaging the eyes providing pivotal mounting for the eyes upon vertical axes, the connecting members and the support including parts co-operative to provide independent pivotal adjustment of the connecting members and eyes with respect to the support upon the mentioned horizontal axis, eye lids fixedly attached directly to said connecting members to swing with the eyes about said mentioned horizontal axis and adjustable" therewith with respect to the support, and bumper means also fixedly connected directly with the connecting members to swing therewith and with the eyes about said h on izontal axis having parts to limit swinging of the eyes in at least one direction about said horizontal axis.

An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between said eyes, a supporting carrier for a pivotal mounting for the cross rod upon a horizontal axis, separately formed eye lid members arranged one over the upper portion of each eye, a separately formed bumper member, connector members said connector members each engaging the cross rod to provide rotary movement of the connector member with the cross rod upon said mentioned horizontal having one part axis and being of a character providing pivotal adjustment of the connector member about the cross rod upon the mentioned horizontal axis, each connector member having other parts by which the respective eye is connected thereto to swing about a vertical the cross rod providing one for each eye;

An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between said eyes, a supporting carrier for the cross rod arranged intermediate the eyes and providing a pivotal mounting for the cross rod upon a horizontal axis, a pair of connector members attached to the cross rod serving to connect the eyes respectively with the cross rod for pivotal movement therewith upon said horizontal axis, said connector members being each independently manually ro-tatably adjustable with respect to the cross rod, said connector members each having pivot portions engaging the respective eyes whereby the eyes are pivotally attached to the connector members for movement upon vertical axes, gravity control means for the eyes, and a pair of separate bumper members fixed one to each connector member to move at all times with its connector member and each having a part to engage a portion of a doll head to limit movement of its respective eye in at least one direction about said horizontal axis.
