Patented June 10, 1930 meme-2 JOHN r. IDORA'U, or noerooiy, Wiscons n FOLDIN momma TABLE Application filed August 22,1927. Serial No. 214,630.
' This invention relates'to improvements in folding ironing tables.
. It is one of the objectsof thepresent invention to provide an ironing table which may be easily and quickly folded to a-closed position, in which position the table is compact for storing.
A further object of the invention is to.
provide a folding ironing table'having a foot latch operable to unlock the table legs for folding.
A further object of the invention'is to provide a folding ironing table in which the supporting legs may be securely lockedin open position, so that they cannot accidentally close or provide anunsteady support.
A further object of the invention is to'provide a folding ironing table equipped .withthreelegs all operatively connected together 2 so that a movement of one leg willtendto move the others also. A further object of the invention is to provide a. folding ironing table; having braces.
adapted to engage some of the legs open position, causing a divergence of the same to provide a steady support. v i A further object of the invention is-to:p'ro-, vide a folding ironing table which is of simple construction is strong and durable, 1s inexpensive to manufacture, and is well adapted for thepurpose described.
With the aboveand other objects in view the invention consists of the improved folding ironing table and its parts 31110100111131- nations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing 1n whlch the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: I Fig. 1 is a side view of the lroning table in open position;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view thereof with the parts in folded position;
V Fig. 3 is an end view of the table in open position; and V Fig. 4 is an end view of a modified form of ironing table.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will appear that the numeral 8 F indicates the ironing board or table proper,
which may be of any suitable shape, butis preferably, of rectangular form, except the} front portion 8 which is tapered.- A U- bracket 9' is secured to the under-surface ofthe board medially of its ends and. another bracket 10 is secured to the unders'urface of 7 one end portion of the board; I Pivotally secured to the end portions of the bracket 10 are a pairof downwardly diverging legs 11., The bracket 10 is formedzwith' an intermediate U-portion 10 and pivotally secured to said portionis a small U-bracket" 12 to one side of which the upper end'portions' of a pair of divergingbraces 13 are secured: The lower end portions of said braces are secured. to the lower endgportions of the legs 11, as clearly shown in Fig. '3. A long leg 14 has its upper end pivotally secured within the U-portion 10 A of the bracket .10 andsaid leg is slightly portion- I flexible and extends toward the end 8 of I the board 8.1 I I The upper end portions offa pair of downwardly and outwardly diverging braces '15 are pivotallysecured to the end portions of the bracket '9 and theupper'end portions of said braces are out angularly, as at 15', to bear against the undersurface ofthe board" 8 when the table is unfolded. -Each of said braces '15 has pivotally securedto an intermediate portion one end portion of'a-lin'k16.
The other end portions ofsaid- 1inks are pivotally securedto. lower portionsof the-1 legs '11. 3 7
{As a connecti'on betweenthe leg-14 and the braces 15a V-shaped l'ocking'member 17 V is provided and the freefend portions of the same have a hooked engagement With-staples 18 depending from outer end portions of the braces 15. Themid-portion of said membe 17 is looped, as at 19, with" a lower crossbar 20. The outer end portionjof-the leg 14 is extended through said looped portion 19'a'nd is slidable with respect thereto and -is formed with anotch 21 for releasable-locking engagement with thez'c ross'bar 205 j a The lower'end' portions of thebraces 1 3 are provided with notches-22 which engage the outer end portions of the braces 15 when thetable is in open position. Also, the elongated I braces when the parts are being unfolded,
exerting an outward pressure on the same,
and being limited by pins 24.
When the table is folded' the parts are as 7 shown in Fig. 2, lying length-wise against the undersurface of the board 8. To unfold the table, the legs 11 are moved away from the board and the braces 13 will move there- 'with. Also, the elongated leg 14 is moved away from the board and when the transverse member 23 engages the braces 15 it will exert a pressure thereon to force the lower end portions of said braces into the notches 22 of thebraces 13. In this manner the legs 11 and braces 13 are held very firmly. under pressure in a diverged position. While the leg 14 is being moved outwardly, it moves through the looped portion 19 of the locking member 17 and to lock the leg 14 and all of the parts in open position the leg 14 is moved until the notch 21 is adjacent the bar 20 of the member 17 and then said leg may be flexed a trifle to snap the bar into said notch. In this way all of the parts are held rigidly and under tension in open position. As the ends of the member 17 are connected to the braces 15, the sameare held in their open positions in engagement with the notched portions of the braces 13. In folding or closing the ironing table it is only necessary to press on the upper part of the looped portion of the locking member to disengage it from the notch 21 and then all of the-legs and braces may be folded against the board.
In Fig. 4 a slightly modified form of ironing board is shown wherein one end portion of the board is provided with a pair of brackets 25 spaced from the undersurface of the board by a block 26. The braces 13 are pivotally secured to the inner ends of the brackets 25 and between the same the upper end portion of the leg 14 is pivotally mounted. The legs 11 are pivotally connected to the outer end portions of the brackets 25. The end portions of a flexible member or chain 27 are connected to intermediate portions of the braces 15 and an intermediate ortion of said chain is secured to the leg 14. S aid chain permits folding of the parts as well as causing a unity of movement between the leg l4and braces 15 and when the parts are unfolded, as in Fig. .4, the chain is stretched taut:
board near one end portion thereof and movable away from the board to extended diverged positions, a pair of brace members pivotally connected at one pair of ends to the bottom portion of the board medially of its ends, the other ends of said brace members being free, said brace members and said third leg crossing each other medially of their lengths when moved away from the board, the outer end portions of said braces releasably bearing against the inner sides of said pair of legs and exerting a lateral pressure thereon, links pivotally connected with said braces and said pair of legs, means connected with the links and releasably engageable with the third leg to hold it in open position and slidable thereon, and means carried by the third leg and engageable with said brace members to hold the same in open position. a
- 2. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a pair of short legs, an elongated third leg, a pair of leg braces connected at one pair of end portions with said pair of legs, all of said legs and said leg braces being pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board near one end portion thereof, the third leg and the pair of legs being movable away from the board to extended diverged positions, a pair of board brace members pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board medially of its ends, said board brace members and said third leg crossing each other medially of their lengths when moved away from the board, the outer end portions of said board brace members terminating adjacent the inner surfaces of the pair of legs and releasably bearing thereagainst, a yielding locking member non-slidably connected with the board brace members and releasably and slidably engageable with the third leg to hold it in open position, and a transverse member carried by said third leg and engageable with said board brace members to hold the same in open position.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
JOHN P. DORAU.
