Description
June 10, 1930. I SAMUELS 1,762,698
KNIFE SHARPENER Filed April 23. I928 INVENTOR A176 0. Swmuels I his ATTORNEY Patented June 10, 1930 UNHED STATES ()FFECE ABE O. SAMUELS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SAMSON-UNITED CORPO- RATION, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE KNIFE SHARIENER Application filed April 23,
My invention relates to a knife sharpener of the general type employing inter-lapping rotary disks such as disclosed in Lampert Patent No 1,558,187, and has for its purpose to provide a simple, practicable, and eflicient structure which can be manufactured at a low cost A further object of the invention is to afford a strong, durable arrangement which lends itself to quick, convenient operation at all times, and will stand up under hart constant usage.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claim following the description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife sharpener constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan View;
Figure 3 is a top plan View with the handle removed Figure 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the base or support, partially broken away;
Figure 5 is an end elevation of Figure t, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view on line 66 ofFigure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawin g, in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, the structure is intended more particularly for use in a knife sharpener of the type including two rows of interlapping rotary disks 1 arranged in parallelism as shown in Figure 3. The disks 1 are mounted on supporting pins 2 which are carried by the up standing vertical walls 3 that are formed at the sides of and integral with one end of the base designated at 4.
Said end of the base merges gradually 1928. Serial No. 272,135.
along a continuous curve into an upwardly inclined opposite end, and such inclined end is bent or rolled transversely upon itself downwardly or oppositely to the direction of the vertical walls 3, thereby affording a stiff tubular-like handle support 5 which is of small cross-section and can be driven into an opening 6 in a wood or other handle 7, the handle being held on the tubular portion 5 by tight frictional engagen'ient.
Vv'ith the construction described, the handle 7 is located at the most convenient angle for holding the sharpener on a horizontal base or table, and the tubular-like portion 5 insures a rigid, stable structure that prevents ptil'lltilble bending or weakening of the handle and affords a device which is sure to give practical and satisfactory service as long as the sharpening disks 1 continue to wear and function. The tubular-like portion 5 also pe nits manufacturing the device at a minimum cost, while affording an economical form of handle support that enables using the sharpener in the most elfective and easiest way.
lihile the structure has been described with reference to a specific embodiment, the invention is not confined to the details shown, and this application is intended to cover such modifications or departures as may come within the intent of the improvement or the scope of the following claim I claim:
A knife sharpener consisting of a flat base portion adapted to rest on a plane support, upstanding side walls integral with the base, a series of sharpening disks mounted between said side walls, said base having an ex tension projecting from one end thereof beyond the side walls and having a central loug'itudinal upwardly dished. portion and side edges that gradually converge and terminate in an integral handle portion that is inclined upwardly from the base portion, said upwardly inclined portion forn'iing a handle port-ion that is generally of inverted U-shape in cross-section, the Walls forming the handle portion extending downwardly in a direction opposite to said side Walls of the base portion, and a. handle surrounding and secured to said handle portion, the handle portion being sharply inclined upwardly to such a degree as to permit conveniently holding' the handle of the sharpener When the base is resting on and against a support, a portion of said extension being adapted to rest on the support with the base. 7
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
ABE O. SAMUELS.
