This invention relates to a combination cigarette case and lighter and has for its primary object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a case of the above-mentioned character including a cigarette compartment and a lighter compartment, each of which is provided with a separate cover and wherein the lighter is automatically actuated by the opening and closing movements of the cover l0 therefor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a case including a cigarette compartment and a lighter compartment each having a separate cover as above set forth, and wherein the opening of one cover oferates to prevent the accidental o ening o the other A further object o the invention is to provide a case of the above mentioned class which is simple, compact, positive in operation, and
inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown an embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved case, comprising a cigarette 5 compartment 2 and a lighter compartment 3.
The case 1 is provided with a transversely extending partition 4, which separates the compartments 2 and 3. The cigarette compartment 2 is provided with a cover 5, which is hinged to the partition 4 and is formed with 1928. Serial No. 286,423.
a latch member 6 for engagement with a lug 7 formed on the main body portion of the case 1. Disposed centrally of the cigarette compartment 2 and extending longitudinally thereof, is a resilient arm 8, which is secured to the partition 4 and is adapted to overlie a plurality of cigarettes contained within the compartment 2 to maintain the cigarettes within the compartment when the cover 5 is 1n open position.
The lighter compartment 3 is of elongated formation and is provided in the upper outer corner thereof with a recess 9. A dividing wall 10 extends from the outer edge face 11 of the compartment 3 to the partition 4 to 65 from within the lighter compartment 3 a relatively large fuel compartment 12, within which is disposed a wick 13.
Spaced above the dividing wall 10, and extending from the edge face 11 in parallel rela- 70 tion to the dividing wall 10 to a point spaced from the partition 4 is a dividing wall 14, which merges into a wall 15 extending for a distance in parallel relation to the partition 4 and terminating in an angular portion 16 75 which merges into the partition 4 at a point spaced from the upper edge 17 of the case 1.
Extending through the dividing walls 10 and 14, and projecting thereabove is a tube 18 through which one end of the wick 13 extends, 80 a portion 19 of the wick projecting above the upper end of the tube. Located between the tube 18 and the partition 4 is a housing 20, which is seated on the dividing wall 10 and projects through the dividing wall 14, termi-` 35 nating above the wall 14 in a portion 21 which is inclined toward the wall 15. A spring 22 is positioned Within the housing 20, upon the upper end of which is resiliently supported a sparker 23, which may be formed of any suitable spark producing alloy.
The upper and inner .portions of the recess 9 are provided with a top 24 which extends from the partition 4 beyond the vertical me- 95 dian of the lighter compartment 3. The top 24 is formed, at the side edges thereof with depending flanges 25, the outer edges of which are cut away as shown at 26. The flanges 25 merge into the walls 15 and 16 and in a portion 100 of the wall 14, thereby providing vertical flanges 27 for the wall 15 at the side edges thereof. Mounted in the flanges 25 and eX- tending through the recess 9, is a pin 28 upon which a cover 29 for the lighter compartment 3 is pivotally mounted. Adjacent the outer edges of the flanges 25 the sides of the cover 29 are ofl'set outwardly to overlie said flanges. The offiset portions of the cover 29 are indicated by the numeral 30.
The outermost portions 31 of the sides of the cover 29 are in longitudinal alignment with the flanges 25. The outer face 32 of the cover 29 is in vertical alignment with the outer face 11 of the lighter compartment 3. The cover 29 is normally held in closed position by means of a spring actuated pawl 33 which is in engagement with a lug 34 formed on the cover 29. Upon release of the pawl 33, the cover 29 is automatically shifted to open position by means of a spring 35, which is coiled about the pivot pin 28 with one end thereof in abutment with the wall 16 to maintain the spring in a compressed condition. The opposite end 36 of the spring extends in an arc through the recess 9 and terminates with its extreme outer end in forcible contact with the top of the cover 29. A longitudinal slot 37 is formed in the top member 24 through which the end 36 of the spring 35 extends when the cover 29 is in raised position.
As clearly shown by dotted lines in Figures 1 and 4, the rearward edges of the offset portions 30 of the sides of the cover 29 overlap a portion of the cigarette compartment 2 when the cover 29 is in open position, thereby forcibly holding the cover 5 for the cigarette compartment 2 in position to prevent the accidental opening of the cover 5.
Secured to the inner face of the cover 29 and extending downwardly and rearwardly therefrom, is a resilient spring 38, which is formed at its free end with a pair of laterally offset ears 39. The lower surface of the spring 38 for a portion of its length, is serrated or otherwise roughened as indicated at 40.
Formed on the wall 14 and extending vertically therefrom is a pair of guides 41, one of which is disposed on either side of the spring 38. The tops of the guides 41 are formed with horizontal portions 42 and arcuate portions 43 and are provided with inwardly extending flanges 44, which extend throughout the length of the portions 42 and 43. Between the sparker 23 and the wick tube 18, one of the guides 41 is provided on the inner surface thereof with a bead or cam 45. The flange 44 for the opposite guide 41 is formed with a notch 46 between the sparker 23 and the tube 18. An extinguisher 47 depends from the spring 38, the lower end of which encloses the upper end of the tube 18 when the cover 2 9 is in closed position.
The lower wall of the compartment l2 is provided with a threaded plug 48 which may be removed for the purpose of rca-fueling said compartment.
To operate the lighter, the pawl 33 is released from its engagement with the lug 34, which causes the cover 29 to be immediately swung on its pivot 28 by means of the pressure of the end 36 of the spring 35 against the lower surface of the top of the cover. The end 36 of the spring slides through the slot 37 in the top member 24 and forces the cover 29 into the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 4, in which position the rearward edges of the offset portions 30 of the sides of the cover overlap the cigarette compartment 2 and maintain the cover 5 in closed position. As the cover 29 is raised, the serrated surface 40 of the spring 38 is drawn across the sparker 23, thereby creating a spark which is thrown directly onto the upper end 19 of the wick 13.
When the spring 18 has moved a sufficient distance to bring one of the ears 39 into contact with the cam 45, the spring 38 is swung laterally to permit the same to be withdrawn from between t-he guides 41. The ear 39 which is forced inwardly by the cam 42 clears the edge of' the flange 44 of the guide upon which the cam 45 is located, and the opposite ear 39 passes upwardly through the notch 46 formed in the flange 44 for the opposite guide 41.
When the cover 29 is returned to closed position, the spring 38 is prevented from coming in contact with the sparker 23 by means of the ear 39 which was actuated by the cam 45 upon the upward movement of the spring 38. The flange 44 for the guide 41 upon which the cam 45 is located extends continuously throughout the length of the portions 42 and 43 of the guides and supports one ear 39 throughout the downward movement of the spring 38.
When the cover 29 reaches its closed position, the ears 39 slip over the rearward ends of the flanges 44, and the inherent resiliency of the spring 38 immediately forces the same into position in contact with the sparker 23. The sparker 23 yieldingly resists the pressure of the spring 38, due to the spring 22 upon which the sparker 23 is seated, thereby insuring positive coaction at all times between the sparker 23 and the spring 38.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of thc same, and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A cigarette lighter comprising, a pair of spaced, rigid guides formed with opposed inturned flanges, a sparker disposed between the guides and beneath the plane of the flanges, a wick adjacent the sparker, a pivoted cover having a resilient melnber secured thereto for normally contacting the sparker when the cover is swung on its pivot to open and close the same, a pair of ears formed on the member and projecting beneath the flanges when the member is in normal position, and means for positioning said ears above said flanges to ride thereon during the closin movement of the cover, said means inclu in a cam formed on the inner surface of one o said guides. j
2. A cigarette lighter comprising, a rigid guide formed with a continuous inturned flange and provided on its inner surface with a cam,` a similar rigid guide having a flange formed with a recess opposite said cam, a sparker disposed between the guides and beneath the plane of the flanges, a Wick adjacent the sparker, a pivoted cover having a resilient member secured thereto for normally contacting the sparker when the cover is swung on its pivot to open and close the same, and a pair of ears projecting laterally from said member and terminating within' the vertical planes of said flanges.
3. A cigarette lighter comprising, a rigid guide formed with a continuous flange and provided on its inner face with a cam dis- Eosed below the flange, a sparker disposed elow the plane of the flange, a wick adjacent the sparker, a pivoted cover having a resilient member secured thereto for normally Contacting the sparker when the cover is swung on its pivot to open and yclose the same, and an ear projecting laterally from said member and normally extending beneath the flange, said ear riding over said cani during the opening movement of the cover to position the ear above the flange when the cover is in open position, said ear riding over the flange during the closing movement of the cover to maintain said member out ofcontact with the sparker.
4. A cigarette lighter comprising, a rigid guide formed with a continuous flange, a sparker disposed below the plane of the flange, a wick adjacent the sparker, a pivoted cover having a resilient member secured thereto for normally contacting the sparker when the cover is swung on its pivot to open and close the same, an ear projecting laterally from said member and normally extending beneath the flange, and means for swinging said member laterally during the opening movement of the cover to position the ear above the flange when the cover is in open position, said ear riding over said flange during the closing movement of the cover and slipping over one end of the flange to normal position when the cover is brought to closed position.
