Description

June 3, 1930. I BLACK 1,761,978
SEPARABLE OR DETACHABLE BOLT EYE Filed Jan. 5, 1929 INVENTOR.
I Patented June 3, 1930 ARTHUR L. BLACK, COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS SEPARABLE 0R DETACHAIBIQE BOLT EYE Application filed January 5.1929. Serial No. 330,648.
This invention relates to a separable or detachable bolt eye for use in connection with suspension, lifting and anchorage purposes and has for its object to provide, in a manner ashereinafter set forth an article of such class constructed and arranged for expeditiously positioning the same in cooperative relation with respect to the head of a bolt and further formed in a manner to arrest turning movement of the boltrelative thereto when the latter is mounted therein and extended therefrom. a
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth a separable or detachable bolt eye which is simple in its construction and arrangement,
strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily connected to and removed from a bolt, capable of being employed with 20.bolts of varying lengths and diameters, and
inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the inventionconsists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of,
the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall-within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bolt eye in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof with respect to a bolt.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the bolt eye and further illustrating the adaptation thereof with respect to a bolt.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the bolt eye.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 Figure'l;
Figure 6 is a section on line 66 Figure 2.
In the drawings 1 denotes the head and 2 the threaded shank of a bolt. The shank 2 is for extension through the object 3, such as a metallic sheet which is to be suspended, transported, lifted or anchored, by a desired means, not shown, for such purpose which is to be attached to the bolt eye, in accordance with this invention. Mounted on the shank 2 is a nut4 which supports the object 3 as well as clamps the latter against the bolt eye.
A bolt eye, inv accordance with this invention comprises a base 5,1preferably of oval contour. The base '5 has the top thereof dishedtransversely and upon an arc. The top ofthe'base 5 is indicatedat 6. Formed in thetop 6, centrally thereof is apolygonal shaped sprocket 7. The base 5 is provided with a transversely extending slot 8 opening at itstop at the bottom 9 of pocket 7 and at its'bottom at the lower face of the base 5. The slot 8 is disposed transversely of the base at 5, is of rectangular contour, and further is elongated in a plane transverse to the plane of the eye. The length ofthe slot 8 is slightly less than the greatest width of the pocket 7, but the walls of the slot 8 at the ends of the (Q latter intersect the walls of the pocket 7. See Figures 3 and 4. Formed integral with each end of the top 6 of base 5, is an upstanding arch-shaped coupling member or element 10 having its I5 inner face 11 forming a continuationof the arc of the top 6 of base 5. The elementlO comprises a top 12 and a pair of arms 13, 14. The arms 13 merge into the ends of the top 6 of base 5. The lower portions of the arms so 13, 14 are indicated at 15 and are flared. The top 12 of element 10 is of circular cross section.
Element 10 is employed for attaching to the bolt eye means employed for transporting, suspending, anchoring or lifting the bolt eye. The polygonal shaped pocket 7 is adapted to receive the head 1 of the bolt and owing to the shape of such pocket it prevents the bolt turning relative to the bolt 90, eye. The slot 8 owing to the length thereof provides for the expeditious inserting of the shank 2 of the bolt in the bolt eye when the latter is to be arranged in co-relation with respect to the bolt. When the nut 4 is mounted on the shank 2 of the bolt the latter is detachably connected to the bolt eye.
When the bolt is to be mounted in and suspended from the bolt eye, it is positioned at an inclination as indicated by dotted lines V the shank of of the invention as claimed. 5
in Figure 5 and 16. The length of the slot 8 permits of this manner of inserting the bolt as the latter can quickly be inserted in the bolt eye and after the shank has beenextended through the slot 8 the bolt can be shifted to a vertical position and the head thereof will seat in the pocket 7 The shank of the. bolt can then be passed through the object to be position.
It is thought that the many advantages detachable bolt eye, in ace this invention can be readily of a separable cordance With I understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet I it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall Within 1 What'I claimis:
'1. A separable or detachable/bolt eye comprising a base and an arch-shaped coupling member integral therewith, said base having 'i a polygonal shaped pocket in itstop for the reception of the head of the bolt and further Q having arectangular slot for the passage. of
bottom of'said pocket and-further having its Walls intersecting the Walls of the pocket and elongated ina plane transverse to the hereto. ARTHUR'L, BLALCKw suspended, transported or lifted I I I and after which the nut 4 will bemounted in the scope- I I i the .b0lt,'said slot openingat the shank and elongated i a V. to :the plane of said I, I
