This invention relates to improvements in machines for applying glue to'sheets, such for instance, as those to be applied to books for forming backs and covers thereof and .5 has for an object to provide improvements in such machines whereby the construction and operation thereof are rendered more simple'and economical whereby the application of the glue tosuch sheets will be it accomplished in a more efficient and better regulated manner.
A machine oft-his general class is disclosed in my pending application, Serial No. 249,-
897, but I have in practice discovered that certain changes thereof and improvements thereon will render thesaid machine more economical, simple and elticient in construction and operation and I have devised said changes and improvements and desire to ob- 2 tain Letters Patent thereon.
An object of the present' invention is to provide for the revolution of the gluing wheel at a different rate of speed than the operation of the feeding device, whereby the gluing wheel shall have a so called drag in applying the glue to the sheet.
A further object is to provide efficient means for regulating the amount of glue carried on the surface of the gluing wheel, where the same contacts with. the sheet.
A further object is to provide av set of feeding rollers with shafts slightly offset with relation; to the'sha-ft of the gluingwheel whereby the sheet to be glued will-be engaged .35 by the feeding'mechanism and given a predetermined speed prior to its contact with the gluing wheel. y

The foregoing and other objects particularly will more fully appear from the following specification as defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like c-haractersof reference indicate corresponding parts throughout, and in which Figure I is a plan of my improved gluing machine with portions, not essential to the present description, broken away.
Figure II is a view the same as Fig. I, except that the work table and parts carried thereby, are thrown'back on the hinges, in order to disclose the mechanism beneath the table. A portion of the table is broken away.

The general objects, purposes and methods of operation of machines for applying glue to sheets to be attached to the backs of books are well understood and thesame arefully set forth in my aforesaid copending application, but the machines heretofore in use and/or invented, have been either too large, complicated and expensive to be installed in the ordinary printing shop or, if simpler and less expensive have been inoperative or inefficient, leaving still a need for a simple,
Positioned withinsaid water tank is a glue pot 6, suitably supported therein'as by flanges 7 resting upon the upper edges of the tank 2. The glue pot'is provided with suitable means as loops 8 for lifting the sameout of the water-tank. The glue pot is mounted so lea that one end thereof is lower than the other, as clearly shown at Fig. 3, whereby the glue will run to the forward end. This can be simply accomplished by making one end of the glue pot shallower than the other, as clearly shown at said Fig. III. Supported by the standards 1 is a framework 9, carrying side bars 10. Carried by the framework, acent the sides of the water tank, are lift bearings 11, in which is mounted shaft 12, carrying, within the glue pot, a gluing wheel 13, preferably of adjustable construction, disclosed in my said co-pending application Gears 14 are carried on the ends of the shaft 12 and mesh with transmission gears 15, which in turn, mesh with gears 16 of less diameter than the gears 14 and mounted on the inner ends of shafts 17 which shafts are mounted in the side bars as at 18. One of the shafts 17 is connected with suitable driving means as worm drive 19, operated from any suitable source, as motor 20. By this construction it will be noted that the shaft of the gluing wheel is offset from, and slightly ahead of, the shafts 17 and also that the revolution of the shafts 17 through the worm drive 19 will cause the revolution of all of the gears above described and the gluing wheel, the power being transmitted through the gears and the gluing wheel shaft, all of which will clearly appear from Fig. 11. It will be noted that not only is the shaft 12 of the gluing wheel slightly forward of the shafts 17 but that by reason of the difference in diameter between the gears 14 and 16, the gluing wheel shaft 12 will revolve more slowly than the shafts 17. Bottom feed rollers 21 are affixed to the shafts 17 and revolve therewith and coact with the top feed rollers hereinafter described.
Mounted on one shaft 17 near the drive 19, is a sprocket 22, operating a chain 23, mounted upon a sprocket 24 on shaft 25 of the conveying mechanism, rollers 26 being mounted on this shaft and revolving therewith and the conveying cords 27 passing around and being operated by, the rollers 26, in the usual manner, needing no further explanation.
Hinged to the framework as at 28, is the table 29, having a portion thereof cut away,
as at 30, the said portion being over the glue.
pot and surrounding the gluing wheel and its associated parts. A portion 31 of the table is also cut away to permitready access to the glue regulating mechanism hereinafter described. The table carries any suitable side adjusting mechanism generally shownat 32.
' This may be of any suitable construction for adjusting and guiding the sides of the sheets which are fed to the machine and needs no further description. The top of the feeding mechanism is carried by the table. The mechanism consists of a shaft 33, suitably revolubly mounted as at 34 and carrying top feed rolls 35 revoluble with the shaft and mounted thereon at positions directly above the bottom feed rolls 21, the table being cut away at 36 to permit the bottom feed rolls to project therethrough to such a height th t the top of the bottom feed rolls will be substantially on a level with the top of the table and the shaft 33 being mounted at such a height that the top feed rolls 35 will contact with the bottom feed rolls 21 and be revolved thereby so as to draw therebetwcen and feed forward a sheet of material inserted into the jaws formed by said rolls while the same are revolving.
The gluing wheel 13 )IOjQClJS slightly above the level of the top of the table, as clearly shown at Fig. IV and there are mounted on shaft 33 for revolution therewith, two pressure rolls 37, the lower edges of which project slightly below the top of the gluing wheel, whereby, when a sheet is run through the feeding mechanism, it will pass over the gluing wheel and be depressed thereagainst by the pressure rolls 37. It will be noted that the pressure rolls are adjustably mounted on the shaft 33 as by set screws 38 and the position of the pressure rolls 37 with relation to the gluing wheel, may be thus readily adjusted. These pressure rollers, being on a shaft slightly offset from the shaft of the gluing wheel, engage and depress the edge of the paper as it is fed over the gluing wheel, thus insuring proper pressure of the edge of the paper 011 the gluing wheel, in order that the glue may be evenly distributed thereon, clear to the edge of the paper. As the paper passes over the gluing wheel the pressure rollers 37 serve to keep the same properly pressed against the gluing wheel and the difference in speed between the revolution of the gluing wheel and the revolution of the feed rollers causes the gluing wheel to drag slightly as it applies the glue to the sheet, thus insuring an eflicient and even application and distribution of the glue throughout the area of that portion of the sheet to which the glue is to be applied. This dragof the gluing wheel gives an efficiency in the application of the glue which may be compared to the efliciency obtained by the proper use of the painters brush in applying paint.
In order to properly regulate the amount of glue on the gluing wheel, I provide a regulator having shaft 39, pivotally mounted in any suitable manner, as at 40, in the upper edges of the glue pot. Projecting from the shaft 39, toward the gluing wheel, is a member 41, carrying a blade 50, slidably mounted on the member 41, asby bolt and wing nut, indicated at 51. The blade is projected forwardly from the member 41 sothat the front edge of the blade comes into close proximity to the periphery of the gluing wheel 13 and on the lower side thereof. posite direction from the shaft 39, is a member 52, having a notch 53 to engage a bolt 54, projecting upwardly from the bottom of the glue pot 6 and preferably mounted in a lug 55, wing nut 56 being provided on the upper end thereof, whereby when the wing nut 56 is screwed down, the blade 50 will be brought closer the periphery of gluing wheel 13, thereby scraping from the said periphery a larger quantity of the glue thereon. By this construction the proximity of the blade 50 to the periphery of'the gluing wheel and consequently the amount of glue carried by the gluing wheel to the sheet to be glued, can be readily regulated or adjusted by the wing nut 56 through the orifice 81 in the Work table.
A material table 57 is provided for holding in a convenient position a supply of the sheets to be run through the machine.
In operation, a sheet to be glued is taken from any convenient place, as from table 57, placed upon the table 29 and against the guide 32, which will be understood to have been properly adjusted, and moved forward into the jaws formed by the top and bottom feed rollers 35, and 21, which will engage the sheet and draw it forward over the gluing wheel, which will draggingly apply a strip of glue to the underside thereof, the pressure rollers 37 operating as above described. It will be noted that the machine is so arranged that no mechanism is required between the gluing wheel and the conveying mechanism for mov- The feed rollers and the gluing wheel are arranged in such proximity to the conveyor cords 27, that the sheet passes directly from the feed mechanism to said conveyor. Thus additional rollers, operating similar to the feed rollers, belts and other appliances are dispensed with and the machine is thus simplified.
Ready removal of the gluing wheel, the glue pot and ready access to all of the operating parts is provided by the hinging of the table, whereby the same may be swung back, uncovering all i of the operating parts as shown at Fig. II and further in this connection, it will be noted that the gluing wheel and its shaft and the gears 14, maybe readily removed by reason of the provision of the lift bearings 11. The glue pot can be readily lifted out of the machine by the handles 8. 7
Changes in details of construction of many wheel for depressing the sheet on either side of the wheel and means for causing the periphery of said wheel to move at a different rate of speed than the sheet being fed thereover, whereby said wheel drags the fluid onto said sheet.
2. In an apparatus for applying strips of fluid to sheets, a fluid applying wheel upon a shaft, top and bottom feed rollers on shafts and forming rolling jaws for engaging and feeding the sheets over the wheel, means carried by the top feed roller shaft and beside the wheel for depressing the sheet on either side of the wheel the shafts of the feed rollers being slightly offset from the shaft of the wheel whereby to engage each sheet prior to its contact with the wheel.
8. In an apparatus for applying fluid to sheets, a fluid applying wheel upon a shaft, top and bottom feed rollers upon shafts, and pressure rollers upon the top feed roller shaft for depressing the sheet on each side of the wheel as it passes thereover.
4. In an apparatus for applying strips of fluid to sheets, a fluid applying wheel upon a shaft, top and bottom feed rollers on shafts, means carried by the top feed roller shaft and beside the wheel for depressing the sheet on either side of the wheel the shafts of the wheel and of the feed rollers being relative slightly offset and being relatively geared for revolution at different speeds whereby the sheet is engaged by the feed rollers and fed over the wheel and the periphery of the wheel is caused to move at a speed diflerent from that of the sheet fed thereover.
5. In an apparatus for applying fluid to sheets, a fluid applying wheel, top and bottom feed rollers on shaft terminating on either side of said wheel, and positioned to engage the sheet and feed it over said wheel and pressure rollers aligned with said top feed rollers and on opposite sides of the Wheel for pressing the edge of the sheet against the Wheel.
