BUILDING WALL VENTIUATOR Filed Oct. 8. 1928 v 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 IN VEN TOR. Harm 55402:
ATTORNEY Patented June 3, 1930 PATENT OFFICE WALTER H. BALTES, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA BUILDING-WALL VENTILATOR Application filed October 8, 1928. Serial No. 310,976.
My invention relates to building Wall ventilators and the objects of my invention are: First, to provide a ventilator of this class which is especially adapted for dwellings or buildings having an exterior finish of stucco, plaster, or other similar finish; second, to provide a ventilator of this class which is inconspicuous and which does not mar the finish of a building; third, to provide a ventilator of this class which is made of material similar to cement or stucco and which when stucco is placed therearound appears to form a continuation of the stucco finish; fourth, to provide a ventilator of this class which when positioned in a finished wall appears to be merely a sheet of screen of which the wall constitutes a frame therefor; fifth, to provide a ventilator of this class which may be used for either inside or outside wall ventilation; 2 sixth, to provide a ventilator of this class which may be used any place where a' ventilator is needed in a stucco, plaster, or other similarly finished wall, the frame of which can be tinted or painted with thewall so as to be indistinct therefrom; seventh, to provide a ventilator of this class which is economical and simple of manufacture; eighth, to provide a ventilator of this class which is easily installed or placed in a wall during the construction thereof; ninth, to provide a ventilator of this class which tends to unite the stucco, plaster, or similar means, forming a part and a continuation thereof but which is relatively rigid so as to maintain its shape around the screen portion thereof without cracking, and tenth, to provide a ventilator of this class which is durable, efficient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional View of a house wall with one form of my ventilator shown in connection therewith; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of my ventilator through 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is an elevational view thereof showing one method of mounting, with the studding and surrounding stucco shown fragmentarily; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 illustrate a slight modification of which Fig. 4 is an elevational view with adjacent portions of a building shown fragmentarily, Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View through 55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is another fragmentary sectional view thereof through 66 of Fig. 4.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The frame 1 and screen 2constitute the principal parts and portions of the structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, while the frame 3, reinforcing 4 and 5, screen 6, and screen clamps 7, constitute the principal parts and portions of the modified structure illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. p p
The structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, consists of a rectangular or other shaped frame 1 made of plastic material, the one side of which forms a molding 1 Embedded in the frame 1 is a screen 2, the molding portion 1 forming a molding around said screen, as shown in Fig. 3. The frame 1 is preferably made just large enough to fit between two studs S.
The ends of the screen 2 extend past the ends of the frame 1. and are adapted to fit against the outer sides of the studs S where nails N may be driven therein for holding the ventilator in position prior to the application of the finishing stucco, plaster, or the like, and its reinforcing.
In cases where a siding is placed over the studding prior to the application of the stucco, a hole is cut therein large enough to receive'the frame 1 and permit the ends 2 of the screen 2 to overlap. The height of the molding 1 above the screen 2' is preferably equal to the thickness of the stucco. plaster or the like and its reinforcing. The side edges 2 of the screen 2 extend past the sides of the frame 1 so as to form a support for the stucco and its reinforcing between the studding, thereby permitting a neat finish with a minimum amount of trouble. The extended side edges 2 also serve to close any gap that may exist between the frame 1 and siding or the like when the ventilator is used in connection therewith.
In the structure shown in Figs. 4;, 5 and 6, a frame 3 similar to the frame 1 and having a molded side 3 is provided within which is cast a pair of reinforcing members 4 and 5. Each reinforcing member is substantially U-shaped with the legs thereof extending along the sides of the frame and their cross pieces across the ends of said frame, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The cross pieces of each reinforcing member, one to each end of the frame, are provided with extended portions 4 and 5 respectively. The extended portions of the reinforcing 4L and 5 are formed by bending a length of the reinforcing against itself forming a double strand, then extending said doubled strand outwardly clear of the frame 3. The ends of these extended portions P and 5 are hooked to receive nails N. There are preferably two of these extended portions on each end of the frame 3, if the frame is relatively small, or if the frame is made large.
The screen 6 is not molded within the frame 3 but is secured thereto by means of clamps 7, the one end of which is molded within the frame, as shown in Figs. 4 and (3. In addition to these clamps 7, the screen is clamped between the ends of the frame and the studding S. The upper and lower margins 6 of the screen extend past the sides of the frame 3 and serve the same functions as the upper and lower margins 2 of the previously described structure.
It is obvious from the construction as illustrated in the drawings and disclosed in the foregoing specification that there is provided a building wall ventilator as aimed at and set forth in the objects of the invention, and though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, and a eertain modification thereof, I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, nor to the modification, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
1. In a ventilator of the class described, a frame of plastic material and a screen supported thereby extending beyond the outer margin of said frame.
2. In a ventilator of the class described, a molded frame of plastic material and a screen covering said frame and adapted to support said frame in position on a building wall.
3. In a ventilator of the class described, a molded frame of plastic material and a screen covering said frame and extending beyond the outer margins thereof, the extended portions of said screen adapted to co-operate with a building wall and support said frame.
4. In a ventilator of the class described, a molded frame of plastic material, a screen supported thereby, and means for holding said frame in position, said screen extending beyond the side margins of said frame for holding wall finishing material from working behind said frame.
5. In a ventilator, the combination with a wall structure finished with plastic material of a molded frame of plastic material and a screen supported thereby, the side margins of said screen extending beyond the side margins of said frame for holding said plastic wall finish from working behind said frame.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego, California, this 28th day of September, 1928.
IVALTER I-I. BALTES.
