UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFIGE.
IVER JOHNSON AND MARTIN BYE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
lMPROVEMENT IN SPRING AIR-PISTOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,004, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, IVER JOHNSON and MARTIN BYE, both of the city and county of YVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Air Pistols and Guns, of which the following is a specification Our invention relates to that class of air pistols or guns in which the projectile is thrown by the discharge of the air from a chamber, containing a spring-impelled piston, whereby the force of the spring is transferred to the projectile through the medium of the condensed air.
It is designed to remedy the defects of the forms of construction heretofore used, and provide a convenient method of loading or inserting the projectile, combined with simplicity of construction, facility of operation, and complete security of parts in place while firing.
Its nature is shown in the following description and accompanying drawings of a pistol substantially embodying our invention.
In said drawings, Figure l is a side View, with a small part of the barrel and breechpiece removed to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a rear view, the same letters socket O and the breech-pin F, to the bore of the barrel A B. The pin F has a lever at its rear end, and is made with a screwthread on its outside, fitting in the socket-piece O, and its front end is beveled to fit the rear end A of the barrel, making a close joint when the leveris turned'to the right and the pin retreated, as at F, when the lever is turned the other way, so that the end A is free to rise, which it does by turning on its pivot, at l), to sufficient elevation to admit the projectile easily; or the lever may be attached to the other end of F, and a part of the barrel, as A, be pivoted to that, and thus be capable of similar elevation. When the projectile is inserted the end A is returned to place, and the pin F, turned to the right, moves forward and closes the joint, ready for firing.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, in a springpiston and air pistol or gun, of the screw-pin F, threaded socket O, and the movable end A of the barrel, arranged to be elevated for inserting the projectile, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witness our hands this 13th day of March, A. D. 1876.
IVER JOHNSON. MARTIN BYE.
Witnesses JAMES GREENE, SANTIAGO VERDI.
