Description

Patented May 20, 1930 NT OFFICE WILLARD DE C. CRATER, OF SUCCASUNNA, JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'IO HERCULES POWDER COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE CHARGE FOR BLASTING CABS No Drawing.
My invention relates to an improvement in blasting, charges'for caps such as are oustomarily used in connection with commercial explosives.
As is well known, blasting caps are used to ellect the detonation or firing of commercial explosives, such as dynamites, permissible explosives, etc., which require for their detonation or firing a primer charge as compared with mere ignition, as in the case of firing, for example, black powder. Heretotore various substances and mixtures of substances have been utilized in the charging of blasting caps, however, the prior caps have not been entirely 15, satisfactory from all standpoints.
Now, in accordance with my invention, I have discovered that a superior blasting cap is provided where the cap is charged with nitrolactose. In accordance with my invention'the nitrolactose is desirably associated with some substance capable of acting as an initial primer, the initial primer being superimposed on'the nitrolactose or being admixed therewith. v
In producing a blasting cap in accordance with my invention the nitrolactose may "be used in association with any desired substance or compound which will be effective as an initial primer, such as, for example, 30, fulminate-chlorate, diazo dinitrophenol', lead azide, etc. and, as has been indicated, the substance or compound used as an initial primer may be superimposed on thenitrolactose, or may be admixed therewith.
In the production of a cap in accordance with my invention, for example, the cap shell may be first charged with say about 0.5 g. of nitrolactose and there may then be superimposed thereon say about 0.4 g. of 80/20 40 fulminate-chlorate, the charge being suitably compressed in the shell.
If desired, in charging a cap with nitrolactose as, for example, fulminate-chlorate, the nitrolactose and fulminate-chlorate may be intermixed, preferably intimately, and the mixture charged into the cap shell and suitabl compressed? Iii will be understood that the nitrolactose may be used in connection with any suitable substance which will act as an initial primer Application filed August 18, 1929. Serial No. 385,696.
other than fulminate-chlorate, as, for example, lead azide, diazo dinitrophenol, etc. the initial primer substance being, for example, superimposed on the nitrolactose or admixed therewith.
It will be noted that the cap in accordance primer. It will also be understood that the' nitrolactose may be used in association, as in admixture with another explosive not necessarily a primer, as for example, tetryl.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a blasting cap a charge including nitrolactose as an ingredient.
2. In a blasting cap a chargevincluding nitrolactose and a substancecapable of acting as a primer for the nitrolactose.
3. In a blasting cap a charge including nitrolactose and a substance capable of acting as a primer for the nitrolactose superimposed on the nitrolactose.
4:. In a blasting cap a charge including nitrolactose and fulminate-chlorate.
5. In a blasting cap a charge including nitrolactose and fulminate-chlorate superimposed on the nitrolactose.
In testimony of which invention, have hereunto set my hand, at Kenvil, N. J on this 7th day of August, 1929.
WILLARD on C. CRATER.
