Description

J.*BATLEY.
FLAG STAFF HOLDER.
No.175,903. Patented. April11,1876.
WITNESSES 2 INVE TOR- I 14' 3. 2b 06m v Z 1 0 ATTORNEY.
N.PE|ER5. PHDTO-LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BATLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES E. COLLIER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN FLAG-STAFF HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,903, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BATLEY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State v of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag-Stan? Brackets, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for connecting a flag-staff to a window-sill, bracket, sign, or other object, afibrding ready means of attachment to and detachment from the same, and preventing injury or defacement of the supporting surface; to which ends my improvements consist in the combination of asocket or sockets, a flanged standard, and a clamping-screw, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The accompanying drawing is a view, in perspective, of a flag-staif bracket embodying my improvements. A vertical standard, A,
carries, at its top, a socket, A for the recep tion of the flag-staff G, and is widened out at ts lower end, upon which is formed a horizontal flange, A. Between the socket A and the flange an arm, A is formed, which, for a portion of its length, is horizontal, and for the remainder either vertical or curved, or inclined upwardly, its extremity being provided with a socket, A, in line with the socket A A vertical clamping'screw, B, engages a nut in the horizontal portion of the arm A and carries a plate, I), on its lower end, the upper being provided with wings, b, or a milled head.
In order to prevent the flag-stafi from turning, I make the opening of the socket A square, or with flattened sides, the endof the staff beingshaped to correspond. A set-screw, a, in the socket A serves to hold the staff firmly in position, and in order to adapt the socket to stafl's ot'diflerent diameters, its lower portion may be made angular or flattened, so that the staff may be wedged therein by the set-screw.
The dotted lines in the drawing show a portion of the sill orother object to which the bracket is attached, said object being firmly clamped between the plate b of the screw B and the lower flange A of the standard. The openings of the sockets A A, may be either at right angles to the standard A or inclined thereto, and in cases where light flag-staifs are used a single socket may suffice.
My improved bracket is readily adjustable to sills of difi'erent depths, and, as is obvious upon inspection, can be readily attached and removed. The methodof fastening employed, involving no penetrating points, renders it applicable to stone or metallic sills, &c., and wholly avoids the injury or disfiguration of the surface to which it is attached.
I claim as myiuvention, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent- The vertical standard A, provided with the socket A horizontal flange A and bent arm A having the socket A in combination with the screw B passing through the bent arm A as and for the object specified.
