Description

-soF'T CoLLAR Fled'Deo. 17, 1929 15 26 23 INVENTR O NEY @MEU MvJ Paienea May 513, 1930 PATEN'I: oFr-'ca Josnrn Hmmm, or New Yon'x, n. Y.
sorr connnza 'Application nled December 17, 1929. 'Serial No. 414,788.
This' invention relates to improvements in apparel collars and more particularly to collars of the soft turnover type attachably or detachably applied to a shirt.
The general object of theinvention resides in the provision of means ina practical, economical andconvenient form to maintain the 'front or wing portions of the folded over' element of a collar firm, unwrinkled and' uncurled.
A further object resides in the provision of vertical pockets extending adjacent to the front portions of the folded over element of j the collar, adapted to receive stifening members, the said pockets being formed between a line of stitchin marginally uniting the edges of all the p 'es of the' folded over element and another line of stitching uniting the plies other than the top ply thereof, in such manner that the outer or front ply is superposed on and independent, of the pockets.
A further object resides in the provision of a folded over collar comprising an outer element and other elements, in which a pocket is formed between any adjacent two of the said other elements by a line of stitching uniting all the elements adjacent their edges and another line of stitching s aced from the former line of stitching unitng together the said two adjacent elements. j
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction hereinafter described and' shown in the accompanying drawing constituting a material part of this dicclosure and in which: v

portions raised, and constructedlin accor ance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a Sectional view in pers ective, taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1 s owing a referred form of my invention.
igure 3 is a cross section at one end of the front edge portion of the folded over top of the collar, before the plies are turned inside out, embodying the preferred form of my invention.
Figure v; is a Sectional view thereof after the plies are turned inside out.
Figure 5 is a cross section view similar to Figure 3 embodymg a modification of my inventon.
Figure 6 is a cross section view similar' Figure 4 embodying such modification.
` Figure 7 is a cross section view similar to lFigure 5 embodying a further modification of my' invention.
Figure 8 is a cross section view similar to Figure 6 embodying such further-modificae0 Referring'to the drawing, 10 represents the band provided with the conventional buttonhole 11, and 12 represents the folded'over top of the collar jomed to the band 10 in a conventional manner..
Figure 1 shows the band sewn on a shirt. in the customary manner.
The folded' over top 12 of the collar is preferably formed of three plies of soft fabric comprising an inner ply 14, an outer ply 15 and an intermediary or interlining ply 16 which are, in the making of the folded over top, superposed one upon the other with the outer ply and intermediary ply outermost and united together by a marginal line of stitchng 17. In the customary making of the collar the plies are turned inside out between the outer and inner plies 15 and 14, by which the line of stitching 17 concealed and the ao I i respect, that, prior to inserting and stitching the folded over top in and to the band, the inner and interlinin plies are united together near their en s by lines of stitching 18, preferably parallel to the lines of stitching 17, and spaced therefrom 'i n such manner that pockets 20v are formed which are adapted to receive stifi'ening members 21, for the purpose of maintaining the front, edges of the folded over top in a firm, unwrinkled and uncurled condition. The lines of stitching 18 may be run prior to the plies being turned inside out or tlereafter.l
After the plies forming the folded over top 12 have been turned inside out and the line of stitching 18 and 19 run, the said top is attached to the band in the conventional manner.
' ,an way.
'l`he pockets 20 are provded with' buttonholed slts 22 in the inner plies 14 in the folded over top l12 to produce reinforced openings therefor. o
Figures 5" and 6 show 'my invention in a modified form, the former indicating the same prior to the plies bein turned inside out and the latter thereafter, n which the pocket 20 is formed by providing an additional strip of plies, and a sti'ening member to fit within i said pocket.
3. A collar having a band, and a folded over top ncluding an 'outer element and other elements, a line of stitching uniting the said elements adjacent their edges, another line of stitching spaced from the former line of stitching and uniting together.
only any -adjacent two of the said other elements, whereby a pocket is formed therebetween, said pocket being adapted to receive a stiffening member.
Signed at New York, in the county and State of NewvYork, this 25th day of' Oct.,
v JOSEPH HIILLMAN.
material 23, superposing the same on the inner ply 14 at an end thereof, joining itsinner end 25 to the inner ply 14 by the line of stitching 26 and uniting its outer end 24 vwith the plies by means of the marginal line of stitching 17 Fi res 7 and 8 show my invention in a further modified form wherein the pocket 20 is formed by interposing the extra strip of material 23, between the outer and interlining plies 15,16, respectively, and joining the inner end 25 thereof to the interlining ply 16 by the line of stitching 26, the outer end 24 thereof being united to the plies as hereinabov'e stated.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptve and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviousl an embodiment may be constructed inclu ing many modifications without departing .from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 1. A collar having a band'and a folded 4' over top including an outer ply, an'inner ply 'and an interlining ply, a line of stitching uniting the said plies together adjacent their edges, and another line of stitching spaced from the former line of stitching untin the inner and interlining plies only, where y a pocket is yformed between the inner and interlining plies. ,i 2. IA collar having a band and a folded I over top including an outer ply, an inner ply and an interlining ply, a line of 'stitching uniting the said plies together adjacent their edges, another line of stitching spaced from' the former line of stitching uniting the inner and interlining plies only, whereby a pocket i is formed between the inner and interlining
