This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cuff buttons and other forms of linked sleeve fastenings and which embodies among other characteristics means for releasing locking engagement of the buttons from one of the parts of the fastening while the buttons are carried by the cud.
An object of the invention contemplates the provision and arrangement of the component structural parts of the locking mechanism within one of the culf buttons.
An additional object of the invention consists of a stud member projecting within one of the cuif buttons.
A further object of the invention constitutes a locking element slidably mounted Within one of the buttons toward and away from the stud to lock and release the latter to and from the adjacent button.
Vvlith the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction7 to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure lis an elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the locked button in section and illustrating by dotted lines the removed position thereof.
Figure 9 o is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference characters 10 and 11 respectively indicate a form or type of cuff button, both of which having enlarged heads 12 upon the outer exposed portions thereof. rlhe body portions of the buttons from the peripheral edges of the heads 12 therefor and-inwardly therefrom are gradually reduced and again outwardly flared, as
at 13, to define channels or grooves let within and upon which the edges of button holes in sleeve cuffs may repose. In addition to these features and characteristics, each of the buttons further include the common characteristic of annular beads 15 upon the peripheral edges of the outwardly flared por- 59 tions 13 of the button bodies 10 and 11.
The differentiating characteristic, in this respect, of the button 10 from the button 11 resides in the provision and arrangement of a disk portion, not shown, carried by the annular bead and upon which is affixed central 55 ly thereof a ring 1G. The button body 11, along these lines, is provided witharemovably secured disl: 17 carrving a ring 18 and which in conjunction with the ring 16 carry a common link fastening 19.
A shoulder portion 20 carried by the disk 1T and projected therefrom in oppositely disposed relation to that of the ring 18 within the body of the button 11 is shaped to provide a gradually enlarged ball head 21.
The locking element, as mentioned in the foregoing, embodies a sleeve member 22 mounted for longitudinal sliding movement within the button body 11 and through the head 12 therefor and which in and of itself is shaped to provide an enlarged head 23 upon the outer terminal thereof being so shaped as to provide an acute shoulder portion with relation to the sleeve member by means of which the nails of the wearers 75 fingers may be readily inserted therebehind to withdraw the sleeve member 22 for appre ciable distances and at will. j The inner end of the slidably mounted sleeve member 22 is split longitudinally thereof for appreciable distances and upon diametrically opposite sides thereof whereby the finger portions 23, as defined between the split portions, may be more readily shaped in conformity to the head and neck portion of the ball head 21.
i As noted from the illustration of my invention in Figure 2 of the drawing, the eX- tremities of the fingers or portions 23 about the neck portion of the ball head 21 are located in juxtaposition to the inner side wall of the button body 11 immediately beneath an annular groove or channel 1li therefor whereby said extremities will be held or otherwise sprung or retained against the neck portion of the ball head. Outward sliding movement of the sleeve member 22 will7 however, release the extremities of the fingers 23 from contacting engagement with the neck portions of the ball head 21 whereby the latter may be withdrawn from the opposite end of the button body. The buttons 11 are preferably worn upon the inner sides of the cuffs.
Gbviously the converse is true in the locking of the assembled cuff button by exerting pres- 5 sure against the head 23 of the sleeve member 22.
It is to be noted that my improved form of culi' fastening will allow more freedom and prevent cramping of the arm by twist- 10 ing. W'hen the arm is rested on a table, the buttons will flatten out as against the table and prevent bruising of the wrist as in the case of the rigid types of buttons.
The links will also permit the shirt sleeves 15 to be pulled up far enough to allow washing of the hands without wettingthe cus.
The buttons are also more easily and. eX- peditiously assembled and detached in comparison with other types of buttons.
2Q The invention essentially resides in the provision and arrangement of a loose or link connection between locking-ly associated buttons.
The invention is susceptible of various 25 changes in its form, proportions and minor i details of construction, and the right is herein reserved' to make such changes as properly fall within thev scope of the` appended claims.
