It has long been common to employ, in connection with books in libraries and names and ages in life insurance and under various other conditions, cards serving as indexes adapted to be grouped together and separated with ease. My invention relates to an improvement in the cards whereby they can be handled or fingered in an easier and more rapid manner. It is the common experience of the users of these cards that in fingering them, it is often necessary, in order to arrive at the desired one, to separate and take three or four, which stick together', from the others in the file, and slide them apart with the moistened thumb before the desired one can be exposed to view. This sticking together is largely due to the contact of the surfaces and the consequent lack of air betweogiihe cards. I have discovered that it is possible and very practical to have the fingered edges of the cards always a little ways apart by beveling these edges, which are the upper and the end edges of The bevels which I propose are to be on the back side of these edges, and therefore the entire front, or face, of the card is thus left plain, so as to be written or printed upon as usual. The purpose of beveling these edges of the cards is to render them more easily separable by the searchers finger tip when separating the'cards while searching for the desired card. My proposed beveling of the fingered edges of the cards render possible this desired result by producing a small permanent open space between the fingered edges, which permanent open space affords the searchers finger tip an inning between these edges, which inning, being permanent, is readily and easily found.

The following is a description of what is considered the best means of carrying out the invention.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a card index, a series of record cards beveled along the back side ofthe top and end edges of the cards, substantially as herein specified.

2. In a card index, a series of record cards having rearwardly beveled edges for easy accessibility and quick handling.
