This invention relates to improvements in bushings, and more particularly to an improved form of bushing which will lit over the worn front end of a propeller shaft and be received within the housing of the front universal housing to compensate for wear between the adjacent portions of the said propeller shaft and universal housing.
An object of the invention is to provide l0 an improved bushing which will be adapted to be fitted and locked within the rearwardly extending portion of the front universal housing or casing of an automobile, to compensate for wear on the front end of the propeller shaft and the cooperating portion of the universal casing.
A further object of the invention is to provide an im roved repair bushing, which will be provide with means for locking the same within the rearwardly extending portion of a universal housing or casing, and to provide a snug bearing for the worn front end of the propeller shaft of an automobile, to take out the wear in the slip joint on the propeller shaft housing, thereby doing away with the necessity of replacing the old and worn housing with a new housing. Vith the installation of my improved bushing in the universal housing or casing, it will be found that all rattle and noise in that part of the mechanism is eliminated, and will further stop any leakage of oil from the casing and joint.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved bushing for position- 55 ing about the worn front end of a propeller shaft of an automobile, and to be received and locked within the universal joint casing or housing, and which will be provided also with a longitudinally extending slot which may be caused to register with a corresponding slot in the propeller shaft, whereby a tool may be inserted through said slots and the bushing removed.
Other objects will appear as the descripaway to show the positioning of my improved 4 bushing;

`improved bushing to overcome these objections, and find that by using my bushing, the
y wear on the several parts may be compensated for, and these parts used for long periods of time, without replacing the same with new parts.
I have indicated the universal joint easing or housing at l, the same being provided with a rearwardly extending collar portion 2, which in turn is provided at its outer end` with an annular flange 8. These housings are usually cast, and are'found to have lugs l at diametrically opposed points where the bellshape portion l of the housing joins the collar portion i2. inasmuch as the inner end of the propeller shaft 5 becomes worn, it is necessary to compensate for the wear between the same and the collar of the universal housing.
My invention provides for the turning down of the inner end of the propeller shaft i 5, until it is of the proper size to be snugly fitted within my improved bushing 6. The bushing 6 will be made in any size desired, and will correspond in length tothe length of the worn portion of the propeller shaft 5. The slots 7 and 8 will be cut longitudinally through the propeller shaft 5 and the bushing 6, so that when desired these slots may be arranged to registerone witlrthe other, so that with a suitable tool, a reinforcing bushing 9 previousl inserted in the propeller shaft may be force from the interior of the same. It will be apparent that I have provided diametrically opposed notches 10 at the front end of the bushing 6, the purpose of which will now be described. In assembling the several parts, I take the bushing 6, and slide the same into the collar 2 of the universal joint housing 1 until the notches or slots become flush with the inner Wall of the casing l, and the lugs 4 are seated Within the said slots. I then take a hammer and knock sharply about the inner edges of the bushing 6 at its inner end, which will positively cause the bushing to become firmly and non-rotatably fixed within the collar of the said universal housing. The bushing 6 is then slipped over the turned down end of the propeller shaft, together with the universal housing, and the other ortions of the joint and automobile assem led. It will therefore be seen that I have devised a replacement bushing with which the wear on the inner end of the propeller shaft and adjacent inner surface of the collar of the universal housing, will be entirely compensated for, thereby eliminating the extra expense of new propeller shafts and universal housings.
I intend to make the housing in the usual manner, but the improved bushing will preferably be made from steel tubing of the proper size, however, it Will be apparent that many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination With a universal joint housing, of a propeller shaft rotatable therein, a bushiner interposed between said housing and shaft, a bushing within said shaft, and means for locking said first mentioned bushing in said housing.
2. In combination with a universal joint housing, of a propeller Shaft rotatable therein, a removable bushing interposed between said housing and shaft, a bushing Within said shaft, means for locking said first mentioned bushin Within said housing, and means in said first mentioned bushing Whereby said second mentioned bushing may be removed from said propeller shaft.
3. In combination with a universal joint housing, of a propeller shaft rotatably mounted in said housing, a replaceable bushing interposed between said housing and shaft, a bushing within said shaft, means for locking said first mentioned bushing in said housing, and registering passages formed in said shaft and said first mentioned bushing whereby said second mentioned bushing may be removed from said ropeller shaft.
