Description

S. DYNES.
WAGON EXTENSION. M Nol'175,4=38. Patented March 28,1875.
J z- 1 z WITNESSES MENTOR WM y M 76 v ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL DYNES, OF GLARINDA, IOYVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-EXTENSIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,438, dated March 538, 1876; application filed October 9, 1875.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL DYNES, of Glarinda, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable lmprovement in Wagon Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figure: of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my wagon-box attachment, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of grain-wagons wherein a detachable extension is used upon their rear eudsfor the purpose of affording a stand for shoveling the grain into sacks and preventing its overflowing upon the ground when the tail-board is raised andithe nature of the invention consists in a metallic bridge rigidly secured to the rear extension of the wagonbox, and overlapping the rear edge of the wagon proper, whereby loss of grain is prevented, and lateral movement of the extension prevented, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents a wagon-box of the usual form adopted for the transportation of cereals, beans, and the like, in connection with which I propose to illustrate my invention. B represents the extension, consisting of a bottom, a, and of two sides, b, rigidly secured together by means of iron straps c c, the first of which is nailed upon the bottom a near its front edges, is bent upwaid and secured to the sides b by means of suitable screws or nails, while the latter is also secured to the rear edge of the bottom,
is then bent upward, and having been bent to conform to the shape of the upper edge of the sides I) is rigidly secured thereto. The bottom a of extension B is provided upon its front edge with a metallic plate, e, in the naing the loss of grain through falling through the crack, andat the same time holding up one end of the said extension, the other end being held in contact with the wagon-box by means of hooks fand eyebolts g.
It will be evident that when the tail-board G is raised out of the guides i t" the contents of the wagon will flow out upon the bottom of extension B instead of falling upon the ground, and may be there readily shoveled into sacks, the bridge-plate preventing any loss, and at the same. time making it impossible that the shovel should strike against the end edge ot'the bottom of the body.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination,,with a grain-wagon, of the detachable extension B, having the overlapping metallic bridge 0 rigidly secured thereto, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' SAMUEL DYNES.
