Patented Apr. 8, 193% UNIE TATES WILLIAM E. WHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DRAFTINGV OUTFIT Application filed March 23, 1927. Serial No. 177,494.
My invention relates to a drafting outfit and has particular reference to a self-contained unitary combination adapted for easy carrying and general use by students, engineers, and others who do not require a board of large size and who, for convenience, desire a complete outfit which is easily carried and capable of use under varying conditions.
The primary object of my invention is to 0 provide a handy portable drafting outfit, all parts of which are adapted to be received within a casing which also performs the function of a drafting board. Preferably the device is made of comparatively small size and is intended primarily to be used by engineers, students or artists in the field, but may be used as a desk outfit if desired. It comprises in addition to the casing, a drawer having suitable compartments adapted to contain the drawing instruments and also to carry a T-square; and a plate having flanges thereon adapted to receive and hold a pad of paper, the said plate having a downwardly turned portion adapted to be received into a slit formed in the casing, thereby holding the pad of paper against movement while being used. The pad of paper is thereby easily removed from the top of the casing and may be placed inside of the casing in the drawer together with the drawing in struments, the T-square and the like, thereby forming a complete unitary portable drafting outfit which is very easily assembled for use and forms a complete unitary kit when assembled in the drawer, so as to prevent the loss of the instruments and the soiling of the pad upon which sketches or drawings have been made. The T-square is adapted to engage the side of the casing in the same manner that the T-square engages the side of the usual drafting board, and is used in the same manner, the flange of the T-square engaging the sides of the casing.
These and other objects of the invention will be more readily and better understood by reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan view partially in sect-ion of a board constructed in accordance with 50 my invention;
and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, a rectangular 1101- low casing is provided having a top wall 10, a bottom wall 11, with side walls 12 and 13, and a double end wall 14. The top wall 10 has a slot 15 therein positioned between the double end walls 14 for the purpose of re ceiving a flange on the plate for holding the pad of paper as will be more fully described hereinafter. The casing at the opposite end is open and is adapted to receive a drawer 16 which conforms substantially to the inside dimensions of the casing in length and width, the drawer 16 having side walls 17 and 18 and having longitudinal partitions 19, 19 therein and/transverse partitions 20 if desired, these partitions dividing the drawer 16 into compartments within which the drawing instruments and supplies may be carried.
The side walls 17 and 18 of the drawer 16 and the partition walls 19 and 20 are approximately one-half the height of the casing, leaving a space above these walls within which a pad of paper 21, having a back 22 thereon and a pad plate or back 23 is adapted to be placed, the said pad plate 23 having inturned flanges 24 and 25 under which the back 22 of the pad is adapted to he slipped longitudinally, thereby holding the pad 21 in position on the pad back 23 and being easily removed therefrom for the insertion of a new pad as may be desired; The plate 23 at 1' one end thereof has a downturned flange 26 which is adapted to fit into the slot 15 in the top 10 .of the casing when the pad is placed on the casing, thereby holding the pad in proper position on the top of the easing when it is desired to use the pad for the purpose of making drawings, sketches or the like.
A T-square is provided having a blade 27 and a head 28, the length of the head 28 being such that the T-square is received in the drawer between the partitions 17 as shown in Figure 1. In use, the head flange will engage the sides of the casing in the usual manner in the use of T-squares against the side of the drawing board. The double end wall 14 is provided between which the slot 15 is positioned in the cover 10 so that the end of the casing is closed against the entrance of dust, dirt and the like, and for the protection of the articles carried within the casing.
A carrying handle 29 is secured to the casing at one of the sides thereof in order to facilitate carrying. A drawer pull and a fastening device may be secured to the drawer of the device in order to facilitate the opening of the drawer if desired, and also insuring against the drawer dropping out of the casing while being carried.
It will be understood that in use the device is normally assembled with a paper pad and T-square inside of the drawer, thereby "forming a small compact kit which is easily carried and handled. When it is desired to use the device, the drawer is opened, the pad of paper and back removed therefrom and the pad and plate placed on the top of the casing with the flange on the plate entering the slot 15, the plate thereby holding the pad of paper against movement, which is ordinarily accomplished by use of thumb tacks in a drawing board. The T-square, of course, is used in the usual manner and the drawer placed to one side forms a convenient holder for the drawing instruments. When the sketching operation of drawings is complete, the device is assembled and the whole kit placed inside of the casing.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a drafting device, the combination of a rectangular, hollow casing, a pad-back, means on said pad-back adapted to engage and hold a pad of paper, said pad-back and associated paper being of a size adapting them to be received within said hollow oasing, said casing being provided with an elongated opening, the said pad-back having a downturned flange adapted to cooperate therewith, whereby a pad of paper may be positioned on the exterior of said casing.
2. A drafting device comprising in combination, a hollow casing, a pad-back having flanges thereon adapted to engage and hold a pad of paper, and a projection on said padback, the said casing having an opening in one side thereof adapted to receive the projection on said pad-back, the said opening March, 1927.
