Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
MATHIAS MATHIESON, OF ROOK ISLAND COUNTY, ILLINOIS."
IMPROVEMENT IN TRANI-S-T'AFFS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.366, dated March 28, 1876; application tiled August 4, 1875.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHrAs MATHIEsoN, of Bock Island county, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inthe Mllers Staff or Level; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective "iew of the statt' or level A, showing the position of strip B, attached to the under surface when used for a level. Fig. 2 is a like View of same when used to obtain a concave or dshing ofthe stone.
Corresponding parts of the same are denoted by like letters of reference.
This improvement relates to a certain improvement in the staff or level A used by inillers in dressing lnillstones; and it consists of a level, constructed with the strip B, attached by screws about seven inches from each end,
leaving the space between the screws free, so that it can be used for the purpose hereinafter set forth. In the center of strip B, on its upper surface, is embedded a nut, d d, and also one corresponding in staff A with reverse thread. Passingthrough lstaff A, and Work- 'ing in these nuts, is thumb-screw C, which, by
turning, presses the strip B downward, making a perfect convex surface of any depth desired. By a reverse motion of screw, strip B is brought again to a level.
v This device being of such construction, as already described, is designed principally for use in dressing millstones, and Where it is desired to have a concaved or dished surface; and, when dressed in this ina-nner, it is contended that better tlour is made, the stones less liable to heat, and less dust arises from grinding.
This device being of such construction, as already described, when applied in the manner used for leveling, Will give such concave or dish to the stone or any other substance as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The strip B, constructed substantially as and for the purpose and in the manner specified and set forth.
MATHIAS MATHIESON.
