BATTLE WITH HANDLE HAVING FLEXIBLE SECTION Application filed December 18, 1929. Serial No. 414,882.

This invention relates .to toy rattles and has for its object to provide a rattle with a cylindrical head and handle member, which is flexible at a point adjacent the head so as to enable a small child to impart a full swinging motion to the head with a very small movement of the handle.

I accomplish this object by means of the construction and arrangement of parts hereina-fter described in the specification, set

forth in the appended claims, and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which a rattle is shown partly in section to disclose otherwise hidden parts.

lindrical head portion, which is constructed preferably of celluloid or other suitable material and which is closed at its opposite ends by conically shaped caps 11 of the same material. The apexes of the caps are flattened to form disc-shaped depression 12, the depression of the so-called bottom cap being provided with a pair of spaced openings 13.

The openings 13 accommodate fixed pins 1 1, which project therethrough in opposite directions and are fixed in position by means of cement or other adhesive substance. In order to add rigidity to the mounting for the pins 14, a separate thimblepiece 15 is seated at 39 its open end in the depression 12, while its closed end is provided with a pair of openings 16 to embrace the pins 14 at a point spaced from the. openings 13. Cement is applied at this second point of support so that the pins l t become practically a rigid part of the cylindrical head 10 and project downwardly and at a slight angle to each other from the bottom cap 11.

The handle 17 for the head 10 comprises a length of rubber tubing 18 which is bent about upon itself and held in this position by means of a wire core 19, the latter being substantially U-shaped and projecting to points short of the ends of the tubing 18. l The ends are disposed over the downwardly projecting ends of the pins 14 which are only I long enough to enter about half way into the ends of the tubing beyond the ends of the wire core 19. This arrangement leaves a 5 short length of unfilled tubing designated 20,

Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes a cywhich therefore retains its normal flexibility and when the rigid handle portion is moved from side to side, the remaining flexible portions 20 of tubing allow the head 10 to swing a still greater degree, much to the amusement of the child. The head portion 10 as usual contains a few stones or scraps 21 for the purpose of producing the rattling sounds which accompany the oscillatory movement of the rattle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:

1. A rattle comprising a head portion and a handle therefor, the latter comprising a flexible tubing having the grip portion rcenforced to establish rigidity therein and a section adjacent the head which remains flexible to enable the head to swing at an angle with respect to the handle.

2. A rattle comprising a head portion with projecting pins at one end, and a handle 0,0111- prising a flexible tubing bent about upon itself and the ends embracing the projecting pins of the head portion, and a rigid core for the tubing projecting to points short of the ends of the pins whereby the handle retains a flexible portion between the pins and the ends of the rigid core.

3. A rattle comprising a cylindrical head portion closed at opposite ends, a thimble member attached at itsopen end to one of the closed ends of the cylinder, a pair of pins projecting through the closed end of the thimble and cylinder and fixed thereto, and a handle for the head comprising a length of rubber tubing bent back upon itself with the free ends disposed over the projecting ends of the pins, and a U-shaped wire core for the interior of the tubing, the ends of the core in the tubing projecting to points short of the ends of the pins, whereby flexible sections are maintained in the handle between the pins and core.
