Our. invention relates to containers.
It is the object of our invention to provide a container of the automatic box type which may be shipped in fiat knocked-down condition vand held rigidly in such condition during shipment; and thereafter be capable of being broken into assembled position.
- It is a further object to provide a box which will maintain itself in assembled position in relatively rigid condition due to the end Hap of the end wall of the box having a serrated end engaging with a corresponding serrated reinforcing strip on the inside of the box, there being a space between the end of the reinforcing strip and the upturned end wall for receiving the overturned inwardly-disposed end of the end wall.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is the bottom of a box, 2 is a side wall and 3 and 4 designate the triangular halves of a corner flap, which is adapted to fold inwardly along the score line 5. The corner flap is integrally connected along the score line 6 to the side wall 2 and the score line 7 to the endfwall 8.' The end wall is hinged along the score line 9 to the bottom 1. It is hinged along the line 10 at the top thereof to an inwardly folding end flap 11 having a serrated edge 12.
This serrated edge is formed by the breaking away at 13 of the serrated end flap from a serrated reinforcing strip of which it is an integral part until broken, such strip being designated 14 and having a serrated edge 15.
The box is shipped iiat with the end flap 11 folded over the end wall 8 and the serrated edges 12 and 15 in abutting integral engagement but perforated to facilitate the rupture along the serrated edges. The strip V14 is pasted to the bottom to hold the end iap in position, to reinforce the box and to strengthen the box during shipment.
When itis desired to assemble the box, the end flap and end wall are bent, as in Figure 3, causing a rupture along the perforated line. The end flap is then unfolded, the side walls are elevated so that the corner flaps are bent inwardly, as will be seen in Figure 5, and then the end Hap 11 is folded over and inwardly enclosing the corner flaps, so that .the serrated edge 12 is inserted in the space 16 between the serrated edge 15 and the score line 9.
These rough edges engaging with one another serve to hold the end ilap in position, together with the fact that the end flap is yieldingly held against the serrated edge 15 of the strip 14 by reason of its end being in the space 16 and pushed against the edge 15 by the expanding corner flaps, which provide a bellows-like expanding action. Thus, the box is held in firm position.
For clarity in Figure 7, the end flap 11 is not shown in engagement with'the bottom 1 and strip 14, but, in practice, that usually folccurs, due to the expansion of the corner fh the modified form, the corner flap 17 isa non-folding flap hinged to the side wall 2 along the lines 6 but severed at 18 from the end wall. Otherwise, it is the same, and the construction and folding are the same.
It will be understood that we desire to comprehend within our invention such modifications as may be clearly embraced within the scope 'of our invention and claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a container, a bottom, side walls hinged thereto, corner flaps, and an end wall, an end Hap hinged to and overlying the end wall and having an overlapping serrated part attached to the bottom of the container, said end flap being adapted to be detached from the portion thereof attached to the bottom of the container along a serrated line.

an end flap hinged to and overlying the end wall and having an overlapping serrated part attached to the bottom of the container, said end Hap being adapted to be detached along a serrated line from the portion thereof attached to the bottom of the container, the line of detachment being removed from the hinged line of the end wall with the bottom.
3. In a container, a bottom, side walls hinged thereto, end walls hinged thereto, corner flaps adapted to nest within said ends walls, a serrated reinforcing strip mounted across the bottom adjacent the inside of the end wall but spaced therefrom, and an inwardly turned end torn from the serrated reinforcing strip thereby hinged to said end wall adapted to overlap the corner aps, and serrated edge on said free end of the end ap. In a container, a bottom, side walls, end Walls and corner flaps hinged one to the other, and an inwardly turned end iap having a portion overlapping the end wall and a portion of the bottom and attached to the bottom having a readily breakable serrated portion to permit of the severing of the maj or portion of the end flap from the portion overlapping the bottom.
