Description

R. MATH ESON April 1, 1930.
KNEE PAD Filed April 2, 1928 ATTO`R N EY WITNESS:
Patented Apr. 1, 1930 UNITED STATES ROY MATHESON, F HOLLIS, OKLAHOMA KNEE PAD Application led April 2,
This invention relates to a knee pad for use by a person scrubbing floors or the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a member which is adapted to be conv nected with the knee portion of each leg of the user, with a spring base for the member and a pad in the member of resilient material and so formed that air will be circulated through the device as pressure is placed on the pad and removed therefrom so that the pad is kept cool.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the device.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan View.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a member of substantially trough-shape with one end closed and its other end open, the closed end being rounded. A frame 2 is suitably fastened to the bottom of the member 1 and a plurality of coil springs 3 have their upper ends connected with said frame. A lower frame 4 is connected with the lower ends of the springs. Thus the two frames with the springs act as a yieldable support for the member 1 when the lower frame 4 is placed on a floor or other surface.
A pad 5, preferably formed of spongy rubber, is placed in the member, the upper part of the pad being hollowed out, as shown at 6, to receive the knee of the user. A suitable lining 7 covers the outer surface of the pad and the pad is preferably vulcanized thereto.
\ Dome-shaped openings 8 are formed in the 1928. Serial No. 266,763.
lower part of the pad and the small upper ends of these openings are in communication with the transverse passages 9 and the longitudinally extendingpassages 10 formed in the pad, the ends of these passages registering with slots 11 formed in the member 1 so that air can enter the openings through said passages. l/Vhen the weight of the user comes upon the pad, the depression of thepad will force air from the openings through the passages and the slots and when this weight is relieved, air will be drawn into the openings through the passages by the expansion of the pad. Thus the pad is kept cool and the device can be worn with comfort even on a hot day.
The device is fastened to the leg of the user by the elastic straps 12, each of which has one end suitably fastened to one side of the member 1 and its other end is detachably connected with the opposite side of the member by the buckle 13.
From the foregoing it will'be seen that I have provided an inexpensive knee pad which will yieldingly support the weight of the user when in a kneeling position and the pad part of ywhich is kept cool by the circulation of air therethrough. The pad can easily be replaced by a new onewhen worn.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a member of trough shape with one end closed, a frame connected with the bottom of said member, a plurality of coil springs having theirv upper ends connected with the frame, aflat frame connected with the lower ends of the springs, straps connected with the member for fastening the same to the knee portion of the leg of the user, a resilient pad in the member, said pad having openings in its bottom portion forming air chambers and said pad having transverse and longitudinal passages therein connected With the chambers and passing through the edges of the pad and the trough-shaped member having slots in its Walls for exposing the outer ends of the passages Whereby air can be drawn into the chambers and expelled therefrom While the device is in use In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
ROY MATHESON.
