My invention relates to a device for the dustless discharge of dustbins into refuse collecting carts. o

For the dustless discharge of dustbins into refusecollecting carts devices are known in which the lid of the dustbin is coupled with a hood adapted to seal the charge opening of the cart and to swing between side walls so that when the dustbin is tipped into the cart the hood and the lid of the dustbin are opened simultaneously. i

Such devices have the drawback that during the tipping of the dustbin the lid of the bin actuates the hood and carries it along into 'the interior of the cart. In this way the lid of the dustbin is unnecessarily strained and becomes prematurelydestroyed and the cart cannot be charged up to its full capacity owing to the room necessary for the lid in the interior of the cart.

According to my invention a substantial improvement is brought about by forming the hood sealing the charge openlng of the collecting cart of individual plates 101I1Bd t0- 7 gether by hinges, the pivots of which are so located that when tipping the dustbin the plate of the hood coupled with the l d of the bin'describes a line which runs substantially parallel with the roof of the cart, the lid of the dustbin being thus carried forward along the roof of the cart and does not project into ts interior. For relieving the lid vand'perm tting it to swing freely, it is hinged to the bin by means of a hinge pin spaced from the body of the dust pin. This pin simultaneously serves as a coupling member to enable the dustbinto be coupled with an open eyeor jaw member upon the hood and thus with the hood itself, the axis of the hinge pin of the lid being in alignment with the axis of the hood hinge so that the dustbin and; the hood are rigidly connected.

Referring to'the drawings, it will-be seen that the hood formed by the plates 2, 3 and 4- is adapted to swing or rock between the side walls 1. The plates 2, 3 and 4: are joined together by hinges 5, 6,7 and 8. The hinge 5 is located at the rear wall 9 while the hinge 8 is attached to the roof 10 of the cart. The front plate 4: of the hood is provided with a recess or opening corresponding with the mouth of the dustbin 17 On the plate 3 is rigidly fixed a plate 11 which in the inoperative position abuts against the front wall 4. The platell is provided at its upper part adjacent to the plate 3 with a depression 19' for a purpose described later on. In alignment with the hinge 7 a forked member or open eye 12 is provided on the plate 3 at its end remote from the hinge 6. The lid 13 of the dustbin 17 is joined to the bin or receptacle by a hinge 14 withfan accessibly disposed or floating pin 15. L The hinge pin 15 is journalled in two separate brackets 15' mounted upon the receptacle 17 and the lid 13 engages the pin 15 by means of two brackets 13'mounted upon it in such a mannerthat between the brackets 13., the pin 15 is freely accessible. 1 The lid of the dustbin is provided with atongue or strip 16 diametrically opposite to its hinge 14 while below this tongue a bolt 18 is mounted upon the receptacle 17. At both sides of the brack= ets 13 stops 20 of angular shape are provided upon the receptacle 17 the free ends of which are located at about the level of the upper edge of the bin 17 At the lower part of the outside of the front plate 4 there is also provided above the hinge 8 a book 18 intended for the reception of the bolt 18 for suspending the bin. j

The manner of operationof my improved device is as follows: F

The dustbin17 to be emptied into the collecting cart has its bolt 18 engaged with'or suspended from the hook;18' and is tipped, around this bolt, the tongue 16 of the lid13 engaging first the recess 11' of the plate '11 through the opening in the front wall 4. .Dur-

ing the further tipping of the dustbin the hinge pin 15 engages the open eye or forked member 12, the lid brackets 13 being located in the recess 19 of the plate 11 while the stops 2O abut against the front wall 4. The clustbin is thus coupled with the hood while the lid is associated with the sealing plate 11. When the receptacle 17 is further tipped into the position shown in Fi 2, the stops 20 press against the plate 4 whlle the bolt 15 actsupon the hinge 7 in such a mannerthat the plates 3 and 2 pass out of the way and together with the hinge 6 move first upwards and then'again downwards in a circle. During this motion a the lid 13 of the dustbin in engagement with the sealing plate 11 is moved forward by the; plate 11 owing to the rigid connection of the latter with the plate 3, the lid 13 opening and its front edge describing a line a approximately parallel with the roof of the cart. Whenthedust bin 17 is withdrawn from the cart, the hood is carried along by the hinge pin 15, the dustbin being closed by the lid 13 and the charge opening in the plate 4 by the plate 11 and the open eye or forked member 12 releasing the hinge pin 15.

While I have shown my invention in a preferred form, it is obvious that manychanges may be made in the details of construction thereof without departing from the principles and spirit of my invention. I desire,-therefore, that the appended claims shall be accorded the broadest construction commensurate with the language thereof, when read in' the light of the prior art.

I claim as myinvention 1. In a refuse handling apparatus, com- )risin a collectin cart and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid,the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed platepivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at the lower edge of'said orificed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body, whereby the bin may be' swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, and means for automatically pivotally engaging another portion of the bin body as the bin is swung further to invert the same. i

2. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid and a pivot pin near the upper portion of the body, the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at thelower edge ofsaid orificed plate for engaging said pivot pin, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lidded endthereof in said orifice, and means for automatically pivotally engaging another portion of the bin body as the bin is swung further to invert the same. I

In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a body, a lid and an unenclosed hinge-pin connecting the lid to the body, the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at the lower edge of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, and means carried by said hood for automatically engaging said hinge-pin as the bin is swung further to invert the same.

a. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer bin consistingof a body, a lid and an unenclosed hinge-pin connecting the lid to the body, the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at the lower edge of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the binbody,whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, and means for automatically engaging said hinge-pin as the bin is swung further to invertthe same; said last-named means comprising a top-plate forming part of said hood and pivoted to the upper edge of said orificed plate, and a yoke carried by said top-plate and adapted to receive and accommodate saldhinge-pin as the bin is swung.

5. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a body, a lid, an unenclosed hinge-pin connecting the lid to the body and a pivot pin carriedby the body opposite to thehinge-pin, the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at the lower edge of said oriiced plate for engaging said pivot pin, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice,

and means for automatically engaging said plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart,

means at the lower edge of said orificed plate for engaging saidpivot pin, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, and means carried by the adjacent hood plate for automatically engaging said hinge-pin as the bin is swung further to invert the same.

'7. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer means adjacent the lower edge of said ori-t ficed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body, whereby the bin may he swung upwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, means operative upon further swinging of the bin to open the lid and upon return of the bin to reclose the lid, and means adjacent the upper edge of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging another upper portion of the bin body, whereby swinging of the bin body during the opening and closing of the lid will positively control the pivotal movement of said orificed plat-e;

8. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid, the combination of a foldable cart hood including a normally vertical orificed plate pivoted at its lower edge to said cart, means at the lower edge of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body, whereby the bin may be swungupwardly to position the lidded end thereof in said orifice, means for pivotally engaging another portion of the bin body as the bin is swung further to invert the same, and means for automatically opening and reclosing the lid relative to the bin as the latter is advanced and returned from inverted position, said last-named means engaging the free edge of the lid and moving it along a line substantially parallel to the top of the cart.

9. In a refuse handling apparatus, comprising a collecting cart having an apertured substantially horizontal top wall and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid, the combination of a foldable hood mounted on said top wall and comprising mutually pivoted plates, one of said plates being orificed, normally vertical, and pivoted at its lower edge to said wall adjacent to said aperture, means adjacent the lower edge of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body,

, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lid in said orifice and then swung further with said orificed plate to invert the bin over said aperture, and means operative during the inversion of the bin for opening I the lid of the latter, said last-named means engaging thefree edge of the lid and moving it along a line substantially parallel to said top wall of the cart.

10; In a refuse handling apparatus, comrising a collecting cart having an apertured substantially horizontal top wall and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid, the combination of a foldable hood mounted on said top wall and comprising mutually pivoted plates, one of said plates being orifice'd, 'nor-' mally vertical, andpiv'oted at its lower edge to said wall adjacent to said aperture", means adjacent the lower edge'of said orificed plate for pivotally engaging anuppe'r p015 tion of the bin body, whereby the bin may be swung upwardly to position the lid in said orifice andthen swung further with said orificed plateto invert the bin over said aperture, andmeans operative during the in version of the bin for opening the lid of the latter, said last-named means engaging the free edge of the lid and moving it along a line substantially parallel to said top wall of the cart, and said last-named means comprising a sealing plate rigidly attached to the hood plate immediately adjacent to said orificed plate.

11. In a refuse prising a collecting cart having an apertured substantially horizontal top wall and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a bin body having a hinged closure lid, the combination of a foldable hood mounted on said top wall and comprising mutually pivoted plates; said plates comprising a rear substantially vertical plate rigidly mounted on said top wall, a pair of rear and front top plates, and an orificed substantially vertical front plate pivoted to said top wall adjacent to said aperture; means on said orificed front plate for pivotally engaging an upper portion of the bin body to permit swinging of the bin into and from inverted position over said aperture, and means operative during the inversion and return of the b1n for opening and reclosing the 11d, said last-named means engaging the free edge of the lid and moving it alonga direction substantially parallel to said top wall, and said last-named means comprising a normally vertical sealing plate rigidly carried by the front top plate of said hood.

In a refuse handling apparatus comprlsing a collecting cart having a receiving opening in its top wall and a refuse transfer bin consisting of a cylindrical body having a hinged closure lid, the combination of a foldable cart hood comprising a rigid rear plate fixed to the top wall of the cart, a second plate of rigid material hinged to the rear plate and constituting a portion of the top of the hood, a third plate of rigid material hinged to said second plate, said third plate being angular, one part constituting a portion of the top of the hood and its other part constituting a sealing 7 plate, a front plate hinged to the third plate and having a cirhandling apparatus, comsealing plate moves approximately parallel to the top wall of the cart. a

13. In a refuse handling apparatus, the combination with the elements claimed in claim 12, of a yoke carried at the forward edgeof said third plate and an unenclosed hinge-pin carried by said transfer bin and adapted to engage and be co-axial with said yoke, whereby the lid of said bin may freely oscillate and the movable plates of the hood will be returned to initial positions by means f} said hinge-pin without coaction of said In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
