Description

A. B. STEVENS.
SPRING TILTING-CHAIR.
No.175,196. Patented March 21,1876.
UNITED. STATEs PATENT OEEIcE ASHER B. STEVENS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY S. HALE, ARTEMAS KILBURN, J. WARREN HALE, CHENEY KILBURN, AND WARREN HALE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMEJNT IN SPRING TILTING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 175,196, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February '21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER B. S EvENs, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Spring Tilting Chairs, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to an improvement in the chair for which Letters Patent were granted to me and my assignees January 11, 1876; and the object of my invention is to avail myself of the advantages possessed by the springs described in the said patent, and at the same time to so construct the chair that the seat can be turned in any direction, or be raised and lowered at pleasure.
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a chair with my improvement; and Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 1 2.
A is the seat of the chair, and B the base, which, in the present instance, consists of four legs. 0n the base is a hollow cylindrical post, I), for receiving the screw It, the nut of which may be secured to or form a part of the said post. The screw is hinged at w to a projection, e, on the under side of the seat A. A ring, m, is arranged to turn and slide freely on the post of the base, and this ring is connected to the seat of the chair by two springs,
D and D. The seat is at liberty to vibrate freely on the top of the screw, which, however, has projections *& i, for limiting the extent of vibration. The screw is relieved from much of the strain to which the seat is subjected when it is tilted backward or forward, the greater portion of this strain being transmitted, through the springs and ring m, to the post b of the base. it will be seen that the seat can be turned laterally in any direction, and raised or lowered at pleasure.
I claim as my invention- 1.. The combination of the screw 11 and seat A, pivoted to the screw, with the springs D D, ring in, and the post b of the base, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the seat A, the screw ASHER B. STEVENS. Witnesses:
HARRY HOWSON, Jr., HARRY SMITH.
