Description

March 25, 1930. F. c. NOLL 1,751,944
REGULATOR FOR HOT AIR FURNACES Filed Jan. 21, 1929 Patented Mar. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES FRED C. NOLL, 0F YOUNGSTOW'N, OHIO REGULATOR- FOlt EDT-AIR FURNACES Application filed January 21,
Regulators of the general character of the one proposed have been used, but have lacked a needed rigidity and have not been susceptible of factory assembly. Moreover, so far as applicant knows no such regulator has been used which permits a fixed permanent adjustment of all reciprocating parts at the time of installation. The objects of my invention are to provide in such a regulator improvements as follows:
First: To provide a rigid metal frame upon which all reciprocating parts are affixed at the factory With no necessity of removing same when installing on furnace.
Second: To provide a regulator which may be readily packed for shipment and which will fit any size or type hot air furnace without alteration or modification.
Third: To provide a regulator which is adj usted when installed and requires no further adjustment.
Fourth: To provide a regulator which may be installed on any furnace by anyone with the use of simple household tools.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevational view of a furnace 1 having the regulator mounted thereon.
The regulator consists of a metal frame 2 lying horizontally on the top of the furnace bonnet, and fastened thereto if desired. This frame 2 has a vertical projection 3 on the rear side of furnace 1 and a projection 4 on the front side, these projections forming a part of the frame 2. A three way bell crank lever 5 is pivoted to frame 2 by means of fulcrum pin 6. A counterweight 7 attached to one leg of bell crank lever 5 serves the purpose of counterbalancing and operating the draft door 8 which is attached by means of a flexible cable or chain 9 and hook 10 to one leg of the bell crank lever 5. This same leg of bell crank lever 5 to which hook 10 is attached is also connected by means of flexible cable or chain, passing over suitable pulleys 12 and 13 to the check draft 14 of furnace 2.
The lower shorter leg of hell crank lever 5 is connected by means of fulcrum pin 15 to a tension link 16 the other end of which is attached by means of fulcrum pin 17 to vertical lever 18 the lower end of which is sup- 1929. Serial No. 333,866.
ported on a fulcrum pin 19 attached to the vertical member 8 of frame 2.
A metal expanding unit 20, which can be any section either solid or hollow, passes in a horizontal position through the sheet metal bonnet of casing, one end being supported and guided by a suitable hole at 21 in vertical member 3 of frame 2. The end of expanding unit 20 passing through the hole at 21 bears against vertical lever 18 near the lower the diameter of expanding unit 20, thus permitting the removal and replacement of the expanding unit 20 thru the thread 23 which is tapped in the main frame 4.
In the preferred installation, described above, the regulator is laid across the top of the furnace hood in the desired position, openings are made in the sides of the furnace hood opposite holes 21 and 23 and expanding unit 20 is passed thru the thread 23 and thru said holes in the furnace hood and screwed 'nto permanent adjustment. The heat contained within the hood causes the expanding unit 20 to elongate and press against the lever 18, which thru the reciprocating levers lowers the leg of hell crank lever 5 to which is attached a cable or chain controlling the draft door 8. Another cable or chain is connected from said leg of hell crank lever 5 to the check draft which is opened as the draft door is closed.
I claim:
1. In connection with a hot air furnace, a rigid metallic frame lying across the top of the bonnet thereof; an expanding member adjustably attached to said frame and passing thru said bonnet; a reciprocating series of levers carried by said frame and so arranged as to be actuated at one end by the force of said expanding member; and a connection between the other end of said reciprocating levers and the draft doors of said furnace.
2. In connection with a hot air furnace, a rigid metallic frame, laying across the top of the bonnet thereof; an expanding member adjustably attached to said frame 'and'passing thru said bonnet; a reciprocating series of levers carried by said frame arranged as shown so as to be actuated at one end by the force of said expanding member, and so as to control by the movement of the other end the draft doors of the furnace.
3. In connection With a hot air furnace, a draft regulator comprising a rigid frame, laying across the bonnet of said furnace, and having permanently affixed thereto a reciprocating series of levers so arranged that as one end of the series is actuated by the movement of a removable expanding member, affixed to the said frame and passing thru the bonnet of said furnace, the other end of the series controls the movement of the draft doors by suitable means.
In testimony whereof I myhand. H c, FREDC. NOLL.
