ADOLPH LUTHY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENTlN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0.
175.124, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADOLPH LUTHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l-represents a rear .elevation of my improved bottle-stopper. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views, showing the same, respectively, in closed and open position, and Fig. 4 shows a detail sectional side view of amodification of the head stopper part.
Similar letters of reference indicate correpondingparts.
My invention relates to a bottle-stopper that is made of a less number of parts than any bottle-stopper hitherto manufactured, while it opens and closes with the greatest facility, and keeps the bottle tightly closed.
The invention consists of a stopper that is applied by the neck-band, and made of one piece of rubber, extending from the necklaand to and over the mouth of the bottle, .so that the swinging yoke with loose sleeve, fitting in a top groove of the stopper, readily closes and opens the same. 7
1n the drawing, A represents a bottle'of any shape; B, a wire neck-band that serves for the purpose of attaching to the side pivots the yoke O, and also intermediately between the pivots the side part or band of the stopper D. I V
The bottle-stopper Dis made of one piece of rubber or other elastic material, that extends from the neck-band to the mouth of the bottle and across the same.
The head a of the stopper is made in the usual shape, to lit the mouth of the bottle,
the sideextension or band b being thinner and narrower, and either applied by the tight fast: ening of the wire-band, in a rigid manner, to the neck, or by passing the neck-band through a lateral perforation at the lower part of the side band I). The side band is made gradually wider and thicker toward the head a to form with the same a body of sufficient thickness to be tightly pressed by the action of the yoke G on the mouth, and. closes the same reliably thereby.
The yoke O has a small friction-sleeve, d, that turns readily on the lateral top part of the yoke, when carried against the elastic stopper, so as to bend the head of the same over the edge of the mouth, and finally close the same. A lateral central groove or shoulder, 0, at the top of the stopper, serves to retain the yoke in position on the stopper until the yoke is swung down again for opening the bottle. The stopper assumes, instantly, on being released from the pressure of the yoke, an upright. position, in line with the side part, retaining this p.sition, so that the bottle may be emptied without interference by the stopper dangling around the mouth. The stopper-head may be strengthened and stiffened by a small metallic core orcap, as indicated in Fig. 4, in the flat top of which the groove for seating the yoke' is arranged.
The metallic cap is readily depressed by the yoke into the elastic embodying part of the stopper, so that the same is not in the way when closing the bottle. The side part of the .elastic stopper is made somewhat longer than the usual distance of the neck-band from the mouth, to be readily adjusted to the exact length required at the neck-band. Thus an extremly simple, easily operated, and cheaplymanufactured stopper device for beer and. other bottles is provided.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bottle-stopper,made of a coitinuous elastic band. with stopper or head-piece being fastened by the neck-band and extending up to and over the mouth of the bottle, in connection with a swinging yoke to readily close or open the same by carrying the yoke in upward or downward direction, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pivoted yoke. having loose frictionsleeve at its lateral top part to admit the ready moving of the yoke along the stopperband, as set forth.
3. For bottle stoppers, a stopper made of a side band, with enlarged head or stopper part, of one continuous piece of elastic material, extending from the neck-band to and over the mouth of the bottle, substantially as described.
ADOLPH LUTHY.
