MOTOR STARTING SWITCH Filed July 15, 1925 M.C. Terrg INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 11, 1930 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MATSON o. TERRY, or PHILADELPHIA, r NNsYLvAN'IA, ASSIGNOR To WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION or PENNSYL- VANIA MOTOR-STARTING SWITCH Application filed my 15,
My invention relates to devices for controlling electric currents, more particularly to devices which will automatically break the circuit in the event of overloading by me-.
5 chanical apparatus associated therewith.
The invention is particularly adapted to controlling the electric motor of continuously-operating domestic type refrigerators, employing motors having starting and running windings. In this type of refrigerator, it is essential that controlling means be employed that will automatically cutout the motor starting winding at the proper time and that will also disassociate the refrigerator apparatus from the electric circuit in the event that the condenser pressure becomes excessive.
In th e accompanying drawing, I have shown a diagrammatic view of my invention in a preferred form.
Referring to the drawin represents the high pressure side of a re rigerator machine of the compression type while 11 indicates. the low pressure side. A split-phase motor 12 drives a pressure pump 12, the motor 12 having a rotor 13, a starting winding 14 connected through a mercury switch member 16 by leads 18 and 19, respectively, and a running winding 15. The switch 16 is of a 30 common type, including a tiltable arc-shaped tube of insulating material having a mercury.
globule therein and contact members projecting through the wall thereof.
A sylphon bellows unit 20 is held between 5 supports 21 and 22, the support 22 being adjustable in the threaded bushing 23. The sylphon bellows 20 is divided into two in dividual chambers 24 and 25 by a partition 20, said chambers being connected respectively to the low side 11 and the high side 10 of the refrigerator as by pipes 26 and 27, respectively. Fastened to one edge of the partition member 20 is a link 28 which in turn operates the switch 16; A spring 29 is provided between the under side of the member 1925. Serial No. 43,876.
21 and the top side of the partition member 20' for partially compensating for the pressure difference between the high and low sides 10 and 11 of the refrigerator. The motor 12 is supplied from feed lines 30 and 30 through fuses 31 and 32 and a manual switch 33.
-The operation of the device is as follows:
When the switch 33 is closed current flows the startingwinding 14, causing the motor to start. The motor 12 drives the compressor or pump 12 which supplies pressure to the high side 10 of the refrigerator.
It is evident that after starting, it becomes advisable to disconnect the starting Winding 14 which is accomplished by the combined effect of the rise in pressure in the chamber 25, and the drop in pressure in the chamber 24. This pressure difference lifts the partition member 20 and tilts the mercury switch16 so that the mercury therein moves to the posit-ion indicated at A, causing the leads 18 and 19 to be disconnected, thereby leaving on the line only the running winding 15. The normal pressure difference between the low and high sides 10 and 11, with the aid of the spring 29, maintains the mercury globule of the-switch 16 out of contact with the leads 17 ,'18 and 19. v
After being set in operation as described, should the pressure in the high'side 10 rise to such a point as to be excessive, this eifect will be transmitted to the chamber 20 and will cause the mercury switch to tilt still further so that the mercury globule will assume the position indicated at B, thereby connecting the leads 17 and 18, causing a short circuit across the supply line and thereby blowing one or both of the fuses 31 and 32.
\ upon resumption of service from the feeders 30 and 30'.
While I have shown my invention in but one form, itwill be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes andinodifications,- without departing from the spirit' thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
