Description
W. J. KIRK March 11, 1930.
DILATOR Filed May 15, 1926 gwuanto'c Patented Mar. 11, 1930 WILLIAM J. KIRK, OF WELLSBURG, WEST VEBGINIA DILATOR Application filed. May 15, 1926.
My invention relates to dilators, and particularly those of the kind adapted for use with rectal diseases or trouble. It has in view to provide, in one instrument or implement, a hollow body portion for insertion and massage manipulation, also for application of medication, and for heating, when desired, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings showing certain preferred .10 embodiments of the invention:
Fig. l is a View of the device in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view with the plunger and handle extended;
Fig. 8 .is a similar view with the plunger screwed in to the limit of its movement;
Fig. 4 is a similar View, showing-the plunger provided with a heating element;
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line V, V, of Fig. 1;
Fig. ;6 is asectional detail view showing the closing plug for use with a chemical heater.
The body of the dilator consists of a hollow tubular member 2 having a tapered insertion point 3, with the wall of the main body somewhat undulating as shown. The insertion point 3 is of a non-bulging diameter, substantially the same as the minimum diameter of member :2, and tapered forwardly beyond the next adjacent outward annular undulation, as shown.
The hollow terminal portion is adapted to contain a charge 4 of medicated substance for exudation through laterally arranged perforations 5 by internal pressure on the medication 4.
Such pressure is effected by a plunger 6 forming the inner end of a hollow stem 7 which is screwed into the outer threaded end portion of body 2 by a threaded neck 8. The cooperating threads are of sufliclent length to provide for ample plunger adpistment and forcing of the medication for several treatments.
Outwardly beyond the threaded portion 8, stem 7 is provided with a flared finger grasping terminal 9 of trumpet forn'lation, enabling the user to take a firm hold thereof, either for manipulation of the dilator as a whole for annular or longitudinal movement, as in massaging, or for relative movement of Serial No. 109,280.
the plunger within the hollow body portion.
Terminal 9 also constitutes a thimble shaped socket a for insertion of the finger of the user or operator, thus facilitating easy manipulation of the dilator, without neces- 5 sitating grasping of it outwardly. In such construction the plug 17 may be set inwardly of the outer end of the finger terminal 9 as shown in Fig. 6, leaving the open tapered space a for the finger as in the principal fig ures.
The body portion is also provided with an annular rounded edge ring 10 having a front flat annular face at right angles to the longitudinal center of the dilator. Ring lO in such form provides a limiting abutment, and
reinforces the device as clearly shown.
When it is desired to include heating with the implement, a suitable heater ll, of the well known electrical resistance type, is in sorted in the hollow interior 12 of stem 7 and connected by current supply wires 13 to any source of current. In such construction the wires are preferably extended through an outer holding plug 14 screwed as at 15 into the flaring graspingterminal 9, with a separate connecting element 16, the-device otherwise being substantially the same as above de scribed.
I may also utilize any suitable chemical 0 heati substance or material instead of the electrical heater, by merely enclosing it within the hollow plunger by the endmost plug 17, of suitable tight construction.
With either construction the implement is 35 capable of merely mechanical use alone, for dilation or massage. without medication or without heat application. It is capable of use in the same general manner as dilators and for the same purpose, while providing by its construction an easily handled and effective manipulator and expander.
When used with medication, the filling charge 4 may be exuded to any desired degree by manipulation of the holding terminal to force the plunger 6 inwardly to any desired extent.
In the same way the device may be used either with. or without medication, but with.
the application of internal heat, as provided for in the construction of Fig. 4.
The time of use or of application of medication, or heat, is easily within the control of the operator, and the various uses for treatment of different diseases or troubles is entirely within the province of the operator. The application of medication may be located at any desired point merely by regulating the degree of insertion followed by adjustment of the plunger.
The construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and appreciated by all those familar with this class of articles. It may be made of various sizes and capacity as to reservoir content or otherwise changed or varied by the skilled mechanic. It will be understood also that while the device is preferably made of hard rubber or bakelite, it may be made of metal or other suitable material, but all such or other changes are to be considered as within the scope of the following claims.

A dilator consisting of a hollow elongated integral body circular in cross section having a tapered perforated end portion and a longitudinally undulating variable diameter exterior, and a continuously integral interior hollow plunger having threaded connection with the outer end of the body and provided at its inner end with a closed piston like terminal and at its outer end with an extended flaring interiorly tapered trumpet shaped grasping terminal.
4. A dilator consisting of a hollow elongated integral body circular in cross section having a tapered perforated end portion and a longitudinally undulating variable diameter exterior, a continuously integral interior hollow plunger having threaded connection with the outer end of the body and provided at its inner end with a closed piston like terminal and at its outer end with an extended flaring trumpet shaped grasping terminal, a heater in the hollow plunger, and a plu having threaded engagement within the flaring grasping terminal providing a support for current supply conductors leading to the heater.
5. A dilator consisting of a hollow elongated integral body circular in cross section having a tapered perforated end portion and a longitudinally undulating variable diameter exterior, a continuously integral interior hollow plunger having threaded connection with the outer end of the body and provided at its inner end with a closed piston like terminal and at its outer end with an extended flaring interiorly tapered trumpet shaped grasping terminal, and a plug tightly secured within the flaring grasping termlnal and closing the interior of the hollow plun er.
6. In a dilator of the class describe the combination of a hollow elongated integral body circular in cross section having an interiorly and exteriorly tapered end provided with a terminal and lateral perforatlons, and exudable substance within the tapered end, an outer annular rounded flat faced limiting collar and interior threads at the inside of the other end of the hollow body, and a hollow plunger having an outer flaring grasping terminal in threaded engagement with said threads and provided with an inner piston terminal adapted to force the exudable substance through said perforations.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
WILLIAM J. KIRK.
