This invention relates to improvements in lasting jacks, and has for its object to provide a jack upon which a last can be `quickly and firmly secured and which can be easily and quickly manipulated by the operator to occupy the dii'lerent positions necessary in order that a shoe under construction thereon may be operated upon in a conve-nient manner and with a minimum amount of etort from the operator.
'lhejack embodies in its Construction a mechanism for looking the last tothe jack which is utilized to best advantage both to apply and remove the last `from the last holder' when the latter is located in its Lippermost position, at which time a locking member is held out of engagement with the last, having been actuated automatically during the latter part of the movement` oi the last holder to its uppermost position. The locking member is then given a slight rotating movement in order that the last may be removed from the last holder.

The connecting member 10 is slotted at 12 to receive a ratchet member 13 provided with a plurality ot teeth 11ibetween which are V-shaped notches 15. The teeth 14- and notches 15 are positioned concentric to the airis of the pivotal pin 11 and are engaged by a pin 16 which is slidably mounted in a sleeve 17 positioned within an opening 18 provided in the arm 8. rilhe pin 16 is provided with a V-shaped end portion 19 which is held in yielding engagement with the teeth 1li and notches 15 of the ratchet member 13 by a spring 2O which surrounds a shouldered portion 21 of said pin, the te sion upon the spring being varied by manipulating a plug 22 which has screwthreaded engagement with the sleeve 17.
l/V hen the connecting member 10 is located in a position that permits the spring pin 16 to spring into one of the notches 15, the V-shaped extremity 19 of the pin will engage the bottom of the V-shaped notch 15 and the connecting member may be locked in any of these positions by means of a locking slide 2B, which is located in a groove 24 provided in the under side of the arm 8. The locking slide 23 is secured within the groove 2liby means o screws 25 which extend through slots Q7 provided in the slide 23 and the end portions of the latter are bent laterally at 27 and 2S in a manner to engage the opposite sides of the arm 8 and vform Stops to limit the movement of the slide in the groove 2&1, The
locking slide 23 is also provided with a notch 29 at an intermediate point thereon and when the end portion 27 of said slide is in contact with the adjacent side of the arm 8, the notch 29 will align with the ratchet member 13 as illustrated in Fig. 2, allowing the connecting member to be rocked upon its pivot 11. 'hen, however, the locking member 10 is moved toward the left in Fig. 2 until the end portion 28 thereof contacts with the adjacent side of the arm 8, the upper edge portion of the locking member will have been moved into one of the V-shaped notches of the ratchet member 13, and said upper edge portion will be located in a position to engage the teeth 14 thereby preventing the connecting member from being rocked in either direction.
Rotatably mounted upon the connecting member 10 is a holder 30 for a last 31. The last holder 30 embodies therein a base portion 32 having an extension 33 formed integral therewith which projects from said base portion through the connecting member 10 and through a recess 34 provided in said connecting member, and a spring is located within the recess 34 and surrounds the extension 33, being held under compression within said recess by means of nuts 36 which have screw-threaded engagement with the eX- tension 33. A friction washer 37 is interposed between the surfaces of the base portion 32 and connecting member 10 and the ease with which the last holder 31 may be rotated upon the connecting member 10 is increased or diminished by increasing or diminishing the tension upon the spring by manipulating the nuts 36.
Also formed integral with the base portion 32 of the last holder 30 and oppositely disposed to the extension 33 thereof is a tapered last pin 38 which is adapted to fit a correspondingly tapered hole 39 provided in the last 31, and the axis of the last pin 38 is eccentrically disposed with relation to the axis of the last holder 30. A locking rod 40 extends through the last pin 38 concentric with the axis of the last holder and the axis of the locking rod 40 will therefore be eccentric to the axis of the last pin. The locking rod 40 at one end thereof is bent to form a radial last gripping portion 41, the extremity of which is so formed that when the rod is located in one of the positions it may assume, the extremity of said radial portion will. be confined within a prolongation of the periphery of the last pin as illustra-ted in Fig. 3, whereas when the radial portion is rotated through an arc of 180o from the position illustrated in Fig. 3, said extremity will project beyond the periphery of the last pin a sufficient amount to engage the last 31 and lock the last to the holder 30 as illustrated in Filgi. 1.
igidly fastened to the rod 40 is an elongated gear 42 which is located within a recess 43 provided in the last holder 30. Surrounding the rod 40 and interposed between an extremity of the gear 42 and the inner end of the recess 43 is a spring 44 which normally acts to force the radial gripping portion 41 of said rod into gripping relation with the last 31. The rod 40 is rotated within the last holder 30 by means of a gear 45 which is rotatably mounted upon a pin 46 which, in turn, is mounted in the base portion 32 of the last holder. The gear meshes with and drives the gear 42, and the gear 45 is rotated by means of a handle 47 which is rigidly fastened thereto in any suitable manner. The
movement of the handle in one direction is limited by its engagement with a pin 48.
A notch 49 is formed in the outer extremity of the last pin 38 and when the last gripping portion 41 of the locking rod 40 is in engagement with the last 31, said gripping portion 41 is located within the notch 49 as illustrated in Fig. 1, and at this time it is impossible to rotate the locking rod 40 owing to the engagement of the portion 41 of the rod with the opposite sides of the notch 49.
A stop screw 50 is mounted in the arm 8 of the bracket 6 and when the last holder is located in its uppermost position, the lower extremity of the rod 40 will engage the head portion of said screw, causing the gear 42 to p,
be forced inwardly within the recess 43, the spring 44 to be compressed and the gripping portion 41 of the locking rod 40 to be moved out of the notch 49 of the last pin and into a position where said gripping portion may be rotated into a position where the last may be removed from the last pin.
A spring actuated dowel pin 51 is mounted in the base portion 32 of the last holder 30 and projects therefrom into an opening 52 provide-d therefor in the last 31, thereby n preventing said last from being rotated upon the last pin 38.
The general operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described is as follows The last 31 is preferably placed upon the tapered last pin 38 when the connecting member 10 and last holder 30 are located in the position illustrated in Fig. 3. At this time the radially disposed last gripping portion 41 of the locking member 40 is located in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and the extremity of said gri pping portion is confined within a prolongation of thc periphery of the last pin, in which position the last may be insertii ed and removed without contacting with the outer extremity of the gripping portion of the locking rod 40.
After the last 31 has been mounted upon the last pin 38, the locking rod 40 is rotated by operating the lever 47 until the last gripping portion 41 of said rod is moved into alignment with the notch 49 of said last pin. The last 31 is now rocked in unison with the last holder 30 and connecting member 10 and von, -liv as soon as the lower extremity of the rod 40 is moved out of engagement with the head of `the screw 50 the spring fili will act to torce the gripping portion 41 of the locking rod into the notch i9 and into engagement with the last, and the latter will then be securely locked to the last holder. The jack may now be tipped to any position desired by the operator with very little exertion and all that is required to rock the connecting member l0 upon its pivot 11 is to apply sufficient pressure to the last 31 and holder 30 to compress the spring 2O and allow the pin 1G to yield inwardly within the sleeve 17 and spring into the next notch of the ratchet member 13 as the connecting member 10 is rotated.
It itis desired to permanently loclr the eo-nneeting member 10 in any predetermined position, the locking slide 23 may be brought into action to engage the ratchet member 13 in a manner to prevent the connecting member from being rotated. rlhe last holder maybe roclred upon its axis 1l through aparoiimately 1300, o-r from the position illusy trated in Fig. 3 to that illustrated in Fig. 1
and at the same time the last holder 30 may be rotated within the connecting member l0 upon the axis of the extension 33 into any position desired by the operator. l/Vhen it is desired to remove the last tromthe last holder the latter is moved to its uppermost position as illustrated in 3, at which time the lower extremity ot the rod i0 will en-` gage the head oi' the screw 50 automatically moving the locking rod 40 within the last holder in a manner to disengage the gripping portion Ll1 ot' the locking rod from the last,
and the latter may then be remo-ved trom the last pin after the handle d? has been rotated in a manner to move said gripping portion into the position illustrated in Fig. 3.
ln Fig. 5 l have illustrated a 'modiiied embodiment or" my invention in which a handle 53 is rigidly fastened directly to the locking rod a0 and the latter is operated directly by the movement of the handle 53 without employing any intervening gear train. rlhe action of this mechanism is exactly the. same as that previously described in connection with the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 4; with the exception that the handle 53 has to be rotated through a greater arc than is required with the handle a7.
I claim 1. A last holder tor a jack having, in combination, a last pin upon which a last may be positioned, rotatable means eccentrically mounted within said pin to engage said last and lock the latter to said pin, and means to rotate said locking means into and out of position to be moved into engagement with the last.

A last holder for a jack having, in combination, a last pin `upon which a last may be positioned, a rod mounted on said pin and provided with a radial last gripping portion, a gear fast to said rod, means meshing with said gear to impart a rotary movement to said rod whereby the gripping portion thereoli is moved into and out of position to be moved into engagement with the last, and means to move the rod to force the last gripping portion thereof into engagement with the last.

A last lholder for a jack having, in combination, a last pin upon which a last may be positioned, a rod mounted on said pin and provided with a radial last gripping portion, a gear tast to said rod, means meshing with leo said gear to impart a rotary movement to said rod whereby the gripping portion thereof is moved into and out of position to be moved into engagement with the last, means to move the rod to force the last gripping portion thereof into engagement with the last, and means to prevent the rotation of the rod While the gripping portion thereof is in contact with the last.
9. A last holder for a jack having, in combination, a last pin upon Which a last may be positioned, a rod mounted in said pin and provided with a radial last gripping portion, a gear fast to said rod, another gear meshing with said first-named gear, al handle fast to said last named gear whereby the latter is rotated manually to impart a rotary movement to said rod to move the gripping portion thereof into and out of position to be moved into engagement with the last, and means to move the rod to force the last gripping portion thereof into engagement with the last.
10. A last holder' for a jack having, in combination, :1 last pin on which a last may be positioned, a locking member yieldingly mounted within said pin and normally conlined within a prolongation of the periphery of the pin, and means to rotate said locking member about an axis extending longitudinally of the last pin to cause a portion thereof to project beyond the periphery of the pin whereby the locking member may interlock with the last.
11. A last holder for a jack having, in combination, al last pin on which a last may be i positioned, a locking member eccentrically mountedwithin said pin and having a radial last gripping portion normally conned within a prolongation ofthe periphery of the pin, and means to rotate said locking member to cause the last gripping portion thereof to project beyond the periphery of the pin whereby the gripping portion may interlock with the last.
12. A jack for a last having, in combination, a bracket, a connecting member pivotally attached to said bracket, a ratchet for said connecting member, a pin yieldingly engaging said ratchet and retarding the movement thereof in opposite directions, other means engaging said ratchet and preventing a movement thereof in either direction, and a last holder mounted upon the connecting member.
13. A jack for a last having, in combination, a bracket, a connecting member pivotally attached to said bracket, a ratchet for said connecting member, a pin yieldingly engaging said ratchet and retarding the movement thereof in opposite directions, a locking member slidably mounted upon said bracket and adapted to engage said ratchet and prevent the movement thereof in either direction,
and a last holder mounted upon the connecting member.
14C. A jack for a last having, in combination, al bracket, a connecting member pivotally attached to said bracket, a last holder rotatably mounted upon said connecting member, and means upon said last holder to grip a last, said gripping means being actuated to release the last by contact With the bracket when the connecting member is moved to a pre-determined position.
15. A jack for a last having, in combination, a bracket, a connecting member pivotally attached to said bracket, a last holder rotatably mounted upon said connecting member, a gripping member for a last yieldingly mounted Within said holder and actuated to release the last by engagement with the bracket when the connecting member is moved to a predetermined position, and means to move the gripping means into and out of position to engage the last.
16. A jack for a last having, in combination, a bracket, a connecting member pivotally attached to said bracket, a last holder rotatably mounted upon said connecting member and embodying therein a last pin, a locking member yieldingly mounted within said last pin and normally confined Within a prolongation of the periphery of the pin, and means to rotate the locking member to cause a portion thereof to project beyond the periphery of the last pin whereby the locking member may interlock with the last, said locking member being moved longitudinally Within the last pin out of engagement with the last by the engagement of the locking member With the bracket.
