My invention relates to railway car hand brakesand has particular reference to winding means which actuates the brake applying means.
This application is a division of my 00- ending application for railway car hand rakes, filed August 23, 1927, Serial No. 214,916, and this application, Serial N 0. 214,916 is a continuation in part of my copending application for hand brake operating means, filed May 2, 1927, Serial No. 188,250, which is a division of application, Serial No. 70,757, filed November 23, 1925,

In the dravflngs, wherein forthe purpose .of illustration, is shown' a preferred embodiment of my invention, the. numeral 20 designates a housing, in the'lower portion of which is arranged a horizontal shaft 21. A chain winding drum 22 is rotatable upon this shaft and has a bevel'gear wheel 23, integral therewith. This bevel gear wheel is provided upon its inner face with gear teeth 24, to engage a bevel pinion 25, turned by a vertical shaft 26, extending to the top of the car and equipped with the usual hand wheel. The gear wheel 23 is provided upon its periphery with an annular set of ratchet teeth 27, as shown. A chain 28 is connected with. one end of the drum 22, and is wound thereon, when the drum is turned. This chain is included with the brake applying means.

The ratchet teeth 27 are adapted to be engaged by a pawl 53, having a tubular hub 54, provided with a radial Figure 6. The tubular hub 54 is adapted to receive a shaft 56, having a radially extending tongue 57, formed integral therewith, between its ends, which enter the notch or groove 55. The pawl shaft 56 is provided at its outer end with a head 58, carrying a radially extending segmental stop 59-. l The inner end of the pawl shaft is adapted to be inserted-within an opening or bearing 59, Figure 5, formed in one wall of the pocket 60, of the housing, while the outer end of the shaft is journaled within. an opening or bearing 60 formed in the other wa l of the pocket 60', Figure 3, and such wall is provided with a radial notch or groove 61, adjacent to the opening 60. The pawl is actuated by a Weight 62, provided on its top, with a designation on as indicated at 63, and upon its bottom with a designation off, as indicated at 64.
The weight is provided with a radial extension 65, having an opening 66, formed therein, to pivotally receive the pawl shaft 56. The extension has a radial notch or groove 67, through which the tongue or rib 57 passes, such groove 67 also passing through the face of the weight 62. The weight 62 is provided upon one end with a curved recess 68, having stop shoulders 69 and 70. I
In assembling the pawl and associated elements, the pawl shaft is first inserted through the opening 66, and the tongue 57 passes through the notchfor groove 67, the segmental stop 59 being arranged between the shoulders 69 and 7 0. The weight is, therefore, pivoted upon the pawl shaft 56. The pawl 53 is now positioned within the pocket 60, and the shaft 56 passed through the opening or bearing 60, and its tongue 57 passing through the notch or groove 61, the shaft passing into the. hub 54 of the pawl and the tongue entering the notch or groove 55, and remaining therein, while the inner end of 'the shaft finally passes into the opening or bearing 59. This assemblage is made before the gear wheel 23 is pos tioned within the housing and when the gear wheel is placed within the housing, the pawl 53 is elevated, and the gear wheel pregroove or notch 55,
tongue is adapted to I 60 rib disfposed upon the intermediate vents the pawl 53 from moving downwardly suificiently whereby the pawl shaft 56 could turn downwardly sufliciently to' bring the tongue 57 into'registration with the notch or groove 61. Hence the pawl shaft is locked within the housing, by the tongue 57 of the pawl shaft engaging behind the wall of the bearing 60, and the pawl can not be removed prior to the removal of the gear wheel.
When the weight 62 is swung to the right, the lower shoulder 70 en ages the top of the segmental stop 59, and t e weight will then hold the pawl into engagement .with the ratchet teeth. When this weight is swung to the left to occupy the outer horizontal position, the opposite shoulder 69 will engage the opposite end of the segmental stop 59, and the weight will retain the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet teeth.
In view of the foregoing description, it is thought that the invention will be fully undertsood.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit 0 my invention, or the scope of the subjoined bearin claims.
Having claim 1. In a railway car hand brake, a housing provided with a bearing having a radial notch, a pawl adapted to be arranged with the housing and havin a tubular hub provided with a radial notc a pawl shaft having a radial rib and adapted to be inserted within the bearing of the housing and into the thus described my invention, I
' tubular hub of the pawl, a weight having an extension provided with an opening to pivotally receive the pawl shaft, said weight having stop shoulders and said pawl shaft having a stop to engage with the stop shoulders, said stop also serving to prevent the removal of the weight prior to the removal of the pawl shaft, a gear wheel mounted within the ouisng and having ratchet teeth to engage with the pawl, the arrangement of the radial notch in the housing being such that the pawl shaft can not be removed until the gear wheel is removed from its operative position within the housing, means to turn the gear wheel, and brake applying means operated by said gear wheel.

In a railway car hand brake, a housin provided with a bearing having a radia notch, a pawl arranged within the housing and having a tubular hub provided with a radial notch, a pawl shaft having a radial portion and adapted to be inserted wit in the of the housin and into thetubul ar hub o the pawl, saiz i radial rib engaging within the radial notch of the pawl to 01 thereo the pawl against turning movement upon the pawl shaft, a weight provided upon one end with a curved face and having stop shoulders near the ends of the curved face, said weight having an extension adjacent to the curved face, said extension havin an opening to pivotally receive the pawl s aft and a radial notch for the assage of the radial rib of the pawl shaft, a-liead carried by the pawl shaft and provided with a radial stop, the ends of which are adapted to engage with said stop shoulders, said head also serving to prevent theremoval of the weight prior to the removal of the pawl shaft, 9. gear wheel mounted within the housing and having ratchet teeth upon its periphery to engage with the pawl, the arrangement of the radial notch in f dial rib and adapted to be inserted within the bearing of the support and within the tubular hub of the pawl, said radial rib being adapted for insertion within the radial notch of the f.-
pawl to hold the pawl against turning movement upon the pawl shaft, a radial Weight provided upon its inner end with a radial extension projecting inwardly beyond the same and having an opening to pivotally receive the pawl shaft and a notch for the passage of the radial rib upon the pawl shaft, said weight being provided upon its inner face with spaced stops disposed upon the same side of the pawl shaft, a gear wheel mounted upon the support and having ratchet teeth upon its periphery to engage with the pawl, the arrangement of the radial notch in the support being such that the pawl shaft can not be removed until the gear wheel is removed from its operative position upon the support, a head carried by thepawl shaft and arranged upon one side of the radial extension of said weightand serving to retain the weight in the operative position until the. pawl shaft is removed, said head having a stop provided with ends to engage the stops of said weight, means to turn t e gear wheel, and brake applying means operated by said gear wheel.
