March 4, 1930. c, E-. BROMAN ADDING AND fiEcoR INe MACHINE Filed Dec. 31. 1921 113/5222021 LhmksEiBmmm Patented Mar. 4, 1930 UNITED srarns earner QFFEQE CHARLES E. BBOMAN, F GRAND RAE- 11355 MECI'IIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY IlIEShTE AldSIG'N- MENTS, TO ADD-INDEX CORFQRATIGN, 1. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE ADDING AND RECGRDING IMAGE-ZINE Application filed December 31, 19.21.
My invention relates to mechanism, actuated b a movable part of the adding machine i'or causing the printing in red inl; of the first item of a column which is totalized.
' It has long been the practice to so print the total at the foot of the column, and also sub-total in the column, but the means heretofore used for such purposes will not accomplish'johe printing of the first item in red. By my improvements the added numbers are comprised between and segregated by a first and last number, both printed in the same color, which is different than'the color of the other added numbers. Such segregation or bounding of a series of added numbers is ver f plain to the eye, and is of practical use an importance.
My invention is adapted for use on the Add-Index machine, and on various ley-set machines on which the adding and printing devices are actuated by a sidehand crank or by a ,motor, and in which the accumulator as a Whole is movable into and out of engagement with the actuators. With such objects in view as well as other advantages Which may be incident to the use of the improvements, the invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the und ll:- standing that the several necessary eleme its constituting the same may be varied in proportions and arrangement without departing from the nature and scope of the invention.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood there 'are shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into practical efliect, without limiting the improvements, in their useful appli- Serial No. 55363268.
frame rearward so that its pinions are completcly disengaged from their toothed actu ators. The accumulator mechanism comprises numeral whcels 3 which are independently rotatable on a shaft 4 in the usual manner. Each wheel 3 has attached to it a pinion 4 which will mesh with its toothed actuator 5 when the frame 1 is in its forward position, and will be disengaged from the actuator when said frame is in its rearward position. Each wheel 3 also has attached thereto a disk 6 formed with a notch 7, these notches being arranged in a known manner relative to the zeros of the wheels so that when the wheels are all at zero, the notches 7 will be in line across the machine and opposite to corresponding rearward projections 8 fixed on a bar or bail 9 carried by a pair or" arms 10, one at each side of the accumulator frame and pivoted thereto at ll. A stop pin (not shown) on the main frame, encountered by the forward edge of either of the arms 10, will hold the projections 8 clear of the accumulator when theaccumulator is in its forward position. The arrangement is such that when there is nothing accumulated, and the notches 7 are alined, and the accumulator frame is swung rearward, the
presence of said notches will leave the projections 8 and bail 9 stationary, but if any numeral wheel is not at zero, that is to say if any figure has been accumulated, the edge of the disk 6 of said wheel will press backward its engaged projection 8 and the bail 9.
12 is a pawl pivoted at 13 to the arm 14 of a lever 15 and formed with a notch or slot 16 which may embrace and which may be disengaged from a pin 17 fixed on an arm of a lever 18. The lever 18 is pivoted at 19 t0 the adding machine frame plate 20 and has a pin 21 which extends outward through said,
plate. A spring 23 connects said pin with the pawl 12 in-such manner as to press the pawl against the pin 17.
24 is an inking ribbon, having a blue upper part and a red lower part, and passing horizontally across the rear part of the machine betweenthe type and the paper in a known manner, and supported and guided between fingers 25 of vertically slidable plates 26, 26. These plates have fixed thereon pins 27 which extend forward and are guided in slots 28 formed in vertical plates 29 fixed to the frame of the machine. Pins 30 fixed on the plates 26 extend forward and through slots 30 in the fixed plates and engage loosely in laterally bent forks 31 of the levers 18. Only one of these levers is shown, but it will be understood that each of the plates 26 will have a set of the above described parts 12, 15 and 18 arranged as already described.
Now when the bail 9 is pressed backward as described, by the edge of one or more of the disks 6, it will press the pawls 12 rearward and disengage them from the ,pins 17, 'so that when the lever 15 is turned downward by the rocking of its shaft 32 by the link 33, it will cause the pawls to slide idly on the bail 9 out of engagement. with the pins 7 and the ribbon will not be shifted and will print with the usual blue color. But if the number wheels are all at zero the notches 7 will all embrace the projections 8 and leave the bail stationary and the pawls 12 in engagement with the pins 17. Under such conditions the levers 15 will, when the shaft 32 is rocked backward (which is done by suitable connections of the link 33 with the adding machine crank handle) cause the pawls 12 and levers 18 to elevate the plates 26 and the ribbon, so that the lower red part of the same will aline with the type and the first'item will be printedin red.
It will be understood that the particular colors which I have mentioned are only typical of any colors which are suitable for the purpose.
The shaft 32 and lever elements 18 are actuated at every movement of the adding machine crank handle.
I do not claim broadly the printing of a special character at the beginning of a. computation as I am aware that that has been done, nor do I claim mechanism for that purpose, and I do not claim broadly any means for shifting the ribbon; but I believe that I am the first to provide means whereby the accumulator and parts connected therewith are combined with a shiftable ribbon and control the position of the latter.
The means for moving the accumulator are illustrated only by the pivoted frame 1 which is swingable rearward and forward on its shaft or journals 2. This frame is so swung by the usual crank handle of the machine which is common in this class of key-set adding machines, ever since the time of the Burroughs Patent 504,963, of September 12, 1893, this being a well known movement used in practically all machines today. The particular connections between the crank handle shaft and the accumulator frame are various in different makes of adding machines, and any suitable means for imparting movement from the crank handle to the accumulator frame may be employed with my present invention. In my Patent 1,639,923 this crank shaft is shown, together with a yielding mechanism whereby movement is imparted by the sector to the adding mechanism including the usual toothed actuators, accumulator frame and printing mechanism (if any).
The printing operation, in which my unshiftcd or shifted ribbon takes part, does or can take place while the accumulator is out of engagement with the actuators or racks 5.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In an adding and recording machine the combination of a movable accumulator having numeral wheels, means for actuating the same, notched disks connected with said numeral wheels and having their notches in alignment when the numeral wheels are all at zero, a movable ribbon holder and shifter, means for moving said ribbon shifter to bring a distinctively inked part of the ribbon to printing position, and devices controlled by said notched disks for disabling said ribbon shifting devices excepting when the numeral wheels are at zero.
2. In an adding and recording machine the combination of movable accumulating mechanism, notched disks turning with the rotary parts of said mechanism, a bail having means to engage in said notches, a movable support for a two-colored ribbon having upper and lower portions of different colors, a pawl adapted to actuate said ribbon support and arranged in the path of said bail to be disabled by the latter when said bail is encountered by any of said disks in the movement of the accumulating mechanism, whereby the ribbon is moved for the printing of the first item in case the register is clear, and is left stationary for the printing of the items after the first.
3. In an adding and recording machine, the combination of adding wheels having a movable frame,'a movable support for a two-color ribbon, a pair of levers for shifting said support, a-second pair of levers, a I
shaft on which said second pair of levers are fixed, means for actuating said shaft from the driving mechanism of the machine, a bail arranged to be actuated by the said frame of the adding wheels, pawls constructed to corn meet or disconnect said airs of levers and controlled by said bail, disks carried by said adding wheels and having notches which are presented to the bail when all of the adding wheels are at zero position, and means carried by the bail for entering said notches to leave the bail stationary at such time, and also engageable by said disks to move the bail and disconnect the pawls when any of the adding wheels is not at zero position.
4. In an adding and recording machine the combination of a movable accumulator, a-
printing ribbon having a plurality of colors, a movable support for the ribbon, numeral disks having notches 7, a bail 9 to enter said notches when said disks are at zero position, and mechanism interposed between said bail and said ribbon support, whereby the movement of the accumulator shifts said ribbon to print a distinctive color when all of the numeral wheels of the accumulator are at zero and leaves said ribbon unshifted to print the usual color when one or more of said disks is not at zero. 7
5. In an adding machine the combination of a movable accumulator comprising numeral wheels, actuators for turning said wheels, disks on said Wheels and having notches which are in alinement When said Wheels are at zero, a movable bail having means to enter said notches, a shiftable carrier for a printing ribbon having a distinctive color, shifting means ,for said ribbon carrier, and pawls for operating said shifting means to bring the distinctive part of the ribbon to printing position and engaging said bail and movable by said bail to inoperative position. Y
' 6. In an adding and recording machine the combination of a movable accumulator, a shiftable support for a ribbon inked in a distinctive color, and means controlled by the movement of the accumulator for shifting the ribbon support to bring the distinctive part of the ribbon to printing position when the parts of the accumulator are at zero or clear position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
