My invention is a garment to be worn below the waist line of a female, at the front or at the rear of the person, to preclude visibility of the person occasioned by light through thin garments now so commonly worn, and primarily performing the function of excluding moisture from' the body reaching the outer garment, such as a dress, whereby wrinkling of said-outer garment arising from the presence of moisture and pressure is minimized.

The garment of my invention is attachable to, and detachable, from an article of female wearing apparel, such as a dress or dress slip, whereby the improved garment may be worn without in any way holding it around the waist of the wearer, thus overcoming a recognized defect in prior garments known as sanitary aprons or shadow proof aprons, the latter being more or less uncomfortable to the wearer both because the weight rests on the waist and of a tendency to become displaced by working its way around the waist no to the motion of the body in walking or while the person is at work.

My garment is detachable at will from the dress or the like, to facilitate cleansing of tin; improved garment, and to enable thelatter to be interchanged with facility upon various kinds of female apparel.

Salient features of my invention are, first, the use of fastening means on the sanitary garment and on the ordinary apparel, whereby the sanitary garment is attachable easily,

securely and quickly to the ordinary apparel,

and, second, the provision of such fastening means at the margins of the sanitary garment concealing from view the limbs of the wearer and of precluding the accession ofjmoisture to the ordinary apparel.

Other functions and advantages of the invention will appear from the followin description taken in connection with the rawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view illustrating the sanitary garment to be worn inside of the apparel.

Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the sanitary garment of my invention.

Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of a preferred form of fastening means.

Referring now to Figures 2 and 3, A is the sanitary garment composed usually of'moisture proof material, such as a thin layer of rubber or rubberized fabric or of any other material possessing the properties of resistance to'the absorption of moisture and of light weight coupled with the necessary durability in service; in short, any material suitable for the purposes may be employed. The garment is of a size and shape to partially cover the person below the waist line, and it is worn at the front or the rear of the body, usually at the rear. Generally speaking, my

sanitary garment resembles in large measure an ordinary apron familiar to women, but whereas such aprons are usually worn on the outside and at the front, it is intended that my sanitary arment shall be worn on the inside of the emale apparel, usually but not necessarily, at the rear.

Means are provided for attaching the sanitary garment to the female apparel, such as a dress slip, a petticoat, lingerie, or even to the outer dress itself, but it is to be noted that such attachment of the sanitary garment is to be on the inside of the apparel, to the end that the sanitary garment is itself not ordinarily visible or exposed to view. Furthermore, such attaching means are positioned for spreading out the sanitary garment and for retaining the same in a spread out or flattened condition, with a view to precluding the sanitary garment from bunching or bundling. Accordingly, I provide a strip or length of fabric, B, made in' 'a-separate piece from the material of the garment A, and also provide a plurality of straps C for co-operation with the strip B, and also provide other fasteners indicated generally at D, E, and p0-. sitioned at two or more places at the margin of garment A.

The strip B is provided with a plurality of apertures b in the form either of eyelets or button holes. This strip B is to be attached in any desired way to the female apparel, indicated at G, on the inside of such article G, and at or near the waist line of sald apparel. Such attachment of strip to apparel G is usually by sewing the strip in able for the purpose, and said straps are attached to the sanitary garment in any desirable way. The straps are positioned at intervals along the upper marginal portion of the garment, from which the straps extend for desired distances. Each strap is provided at the free end with a stiffened tab, 0, composed of thin metal of channeled cross section encased within the fabric material of the strap itself, the latter being infolded within the channel of the stiffening agent, as shown in Figure 3,'and said channeled metal tab is compressed to effect the permanent union of the fabric and the metal in a way to encase the metal and to afford a rigid cross member at the outer or free end portion of strap 0. 4

The fasteners D, E, are positioned at the marginal portion of the sanitary garment remote to waist strip B and usually at points corresponding substantially to the lower corners of said garment A. Each fastener-D or E is constructed as follows A strap (1 is attached togarment A to protrude outwardly from it, and this strap (2 is composed usually of fabric with a stiffened tab d, the same being composed usually of metal of channeled cross section. The metal tab is encased within the strap by folding the latter around the metal, and also by infolding the fabric within the channel of the tab, after which the metal is compressed, as shown in Figure 3, with a view to effecting an inseparable union of fabric and metal, wherein the metal is encased to preclude such metal from coming in contact with the flesh of the wearer. A second strap, e, is provided for attachment to the apparel, such as G, and this second strap is furnished with an aperture 6, the latter being usually a buttonhole or an eyelet.

To adapt my sanitary garment to a selected article, G, of female apparel, the waist strip B is attached to the article G at or about the waist line, and the straps e, e, of fasteners- D, E, are attached at appropriate places to the apparel G, as indicated in Figures 1 and 2. Now to fasten the garment A in place, the tabs 0 of straps C are thrust through the apertures b of strip B and the tabsv d of straps d are thrust through the apertures e of straps e. The tabs 0, 11, thus .co-operate with the apertures 12 and e of straps B, d, e, to constitute therewith separable fasteners, whereby the garment A is so attached to the apparel G as to preclude in a most effective way the accidental dislodgment of the garment A from apparel, but at the same time these fasteners may be manipulated easily by the fingers of the operator so as to attach the gar-- ment A to apparel G easily and quickly, and similarly, such fasteners may be operated moval from apparel G of the sanitary garment A for cleaning or other purposes.

In use, the garment A is on the inside of the apparel G to lie between the underwear or the person and the material of apparel G, and thus is within the outer garment, such as a dress. The sanitary garment is not in any way confined around the waist, so that the waist and hips of the wearer are relieved of the weight of said sanitary garment and re-,

lieved, also, of the belt or stra'p usually employed for holding the so-called sanitary apron in position. Furthermore, the sanitary garment is so connected to the apparel that when worn it is retained in a spread-out condition, and with the sanitary garment is associated a number of separable fasteners which act to securely hold the sanitary garmanually with facility for effecting the rement attached to the apparel, whereby the materials, does not become wrinkled when a woman sits down. Further, the use of the moisture proof sanitary garment inside of the clothing has a tendency to prevent, or at least to minimize, crushing and wrinkling of velvet dresses, or dresses composed in whole or in part of pile fabrics.

Havin thus fully described the invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. A sanitary and shadow proof garment comprising an apron composed of moisture resistant material, a band separate from said apron, said band being attachable to an outer garment upon the interior thereof and positioned in a spaced relation to the upper margin of said apron, said band having a plurality of apertures a plurality of straps fixed to the apron and extending upwardly therefrom, each strap having a stiffened tab insertible into an aperture of said band, a plurality of corner straps fixed to the apron substantially at the lower corner ortions thereof and extending outwardly, eac of said straps j having a stiffened tab, and straps attachable a ron for retaining the same in a spread condition upon the interior of an outer garment.

2. A sanitary and shadow-proof apron provided with a plurality of spaced straps, each having a stiflened tab, a plurality of apertured straps adapted to be attached to a garment, said stiffened tabs being insertible into said apertures in the apertured straps to retain the apron in a spread condition on the garment.

3. A sanitar and shadow-proof apron provided with a p urality of straps at its to and bottom ortions, each strap having a sti ened tab, a p urality of apertured straps adapted to be attached to a garment adjacent said first mentioned straps, said stiffened tabs being insertible into said apertures in the apertured straps to retain the apron in a spread condition on the garment.
