The two side-walls are slightly notched'at 42, and the flue-plate 32 is fitted in the upper portion of the mouth or open front side of the shaped member 30, its top and side edges being welded to the inner surfaces of such member, its lower edge being welded or otherwise suitably fastened to the crownsheet 13. a
The lower portions of the side- walls 36, 37 are in register or alignment with the sidewalls 14 and 15, and the edges of the plates 36 and 14 and 37 and 15 are welded together in butting relation;
Thus the back, top and side walls of the complementary or auxiliary fire-box or co1nbustion-chamber are provided by a single, suitably-shaped, metal plate which is welded to the other parts of the structure, hence avoiding the undesired riveting.
Such element 30, by reason of its several strengthening and stifiening curved or rounded sections, is adequately. and sufficiently braced by its own inherent form and shape to materially decrease the amount of staying required to give the structure the proper stren th and althoiwh sta -bolts 43 are used to secure together the spaced plates 26 and and other like members 44 are employed to tie together the side- wall plates 36 and 18 and 37 and 19, the number of such parts used is less than customary and their proximity to the curved portions of the member 80 is less because the latter are strong and rigid enough to brace the adjacent flat or plane portions of the plates some little distance from them. p T
Other stay-bolts 45 are used to join together the separated plates 14 and 18 and 15 and 19 and opposite sides "of the boiler may be fastened together by cross tie-rods 46.
The top portion of the combustion-compartment 12 is extremely hotduring the operation of the boiler, and, for that reason, it
is desirable to providea construction which willaid the efficientcirculation of the water at this part of the boiler, the rounded surfaces specified accomplishing this object, as well as the other advantages just enumerated.
In view of the fact that the upper parts of I the water legs at the rear andsides of the sup ,means for attaining an especially beneficial upward flow of the water in suchlegs as it becomes heated and rises being replaced below bycooler water. 3
The invention, as presented, and as defined by the appended claims, is susceptibleof a variety of embodiments and is not necessarily restricted to the details of structure of the particular preferred boiler selected as a sultable example; V V
We claim:
1. In a heater having a main combustion chamber and a supplemental combustionchamber connected with the rear of said main-chamber and extended higher than the latter, a first metal plate forming the outer shell of'the boiler and the outer side-walls of both chambers, a second front-wall plate for the boiler, a third rear-wall plate for'the boiler, a fourth single metal plate forming the crown-sheet and the inner side-walls of said main-ch amber, a fifth single metal plate forming the crown-sheet, the inner side-walls and the inner rear-wall of said supplementalchamber, a sixth flue-sheet secured to said fifth plate and to the crown-sheet of said main-chamber, andfiues connecting said fiuesheet and said front-wall plate, said side-wall portions of said fourth and fifth plates being welded together, the junctions of said crownsheet of said fifth plate with its rear and side wall portions being curved, and the junctions of said side and rear walls of the same plate being curved and downwardly tapered.
2. In a heater having a main combustionchamber and a supplemental combustionchamber connected with the rear of said main-chamber and extended higher than the latter, a first metal plate forming the outer 1 shell of the boiler and the outer side-walls of fifth plate and to the crown-sheet of said main-chamber,and fines connecting saidflue sheet and said' front-wall plate, said sidewall portions of said fourth and fifth plates being welded together, the junctions of said crown-sheet of saidfifth plate ,with its rear and side wall portions being curved, and the junctions of said side and rear "walls of the same plate being curved.
