Description

Feb. 25, 1930. D. H. DUNNE ,8
AVIATOR S GAUNTLET Filed March 19', 1928 Patented Feb. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID HENRY DUNNE, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO WOODS MAN U- FACTURING COMPANY, LIMITED, OF HD'LL, QUEBEC, CANADA I AVIATOB S GAUMIIET Application filed March 19, 1928. Serial No. 262,810.
This invention relates to improvements in gauntlets and more particularly to gauntlets for aviators and the objects of the invention are to provide a light warm and comfortable gauntlet provided with an auxiliary mitt whereby the gauntlet may be removed without removing the mitt thereby permitting free use of the hand without it being completely exposed to climatic condition.
Further objects of the invention are to pro-,
' out the gauntlet for fastening the mitt and the gauntlet together and for permitting the gauntlet to be removed from the hand without removing the mitt.
It is well known that under present existing conditions it is very often necessary, according to conditions arising, for an aviator to remove his gloves there y exposing the hands in the case of northern latitudes to extreme cold with consequent difliculty in using them. To overcome this and at the same time permit free use of the hand while keeping it warm when the gauntlet is removed as well as permitting free movement of the fingers which is not possible with the gauntlet, I provide an auxiliary love or mitt having dome fasteners and designed to fit snugl on the hand within the gauntlet or glove w ich being also provided with fasteners permits engagement of the mitt therewith to retain both securely on the hand and when necessary rmits ready removal of the gauntlet leavmg the mittened hand free to perform such work as may suddenly arise in connectlon with which it is necessary to have the hand practically free while at the same t1me kept warm.
In the accom anying drawingsin which I have illustra an example of my invention,
like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an aviators inner gauntlet,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the mitt or inner glove, 1
F igure 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, u
- Figure 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4'4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional detail of the material for the gauntlet.
Fi re 6 is a perspective detail of the filler for t e gauntlet. Referring more particularly to the drawings 10 designates the main gauntlet with thumb portion 11 and asplit 12 in the side provided with a hookless fastener 13. A single strap 14 of well known construction is provided for the wrist 15. The gauntlet 10 is provided on the inside with dome fasteners 16 and 17 and is further ada ted to house an auxiliary glove or mitt 18 (see Figure 2) provided with a fastener 19 at the end thereof and designed to detachably'enga e therewith to hold the main gauntlet and t e auxiliary gauntlet or mitt snugly on the hand of the wearer.
The mitt 18 is preferably made of wool and is adapted to fit snugly on the hand of the wearer and to ermit free layof the fingers, a thumb 21 being formed integral therewith. The outer gauntlet 10 is formed with an outer casing 22 of leather or the like the back of the hand rtion of which may, as shown in Figure 3, h: faced with fur as at 23. Within the outer casing is a filler 24 of the down of northern water-fowl and a suitable linin 25. In use the mitt 18 is slipped over the and and then the gauntlet or outer glove 10, the fasteners of the mitt engaging with the fasteners of the gauntlet 10. A stifienin memdling the aviator has only to ngage the faster-fines sl p ofi the mam gauntlet and go to work with the auxiliary gauntlet or mitt 18 on his hand which while affording warmth and comfort therefor permits, on account of the flexibility of material used, free use of the fingers, When work is completed the mitten is slipped into the gauntlet thus ensuring that the hands while being kept warm are practically free.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is In a gauntlet of the character described, the combination of a hand covering of flexible weather and windproof material provided with fixed linings and an intermediate filler of the down of northern waterfowl, said covering, lining and filler being formed with a slit of limited length in one side thereof, hookless fastening means positioned throughout the length of the slit on each side thereof, and a mitt of flexible material adapted to fit within the covering provided with detachable fastening means adapted to register and detachably engage with co-operating fastening means positioned in the lining of the covering. 7 h Ini witness whereof I have hereunto set my DAVID HENERY DUNNE.
