TYPEWRITING MACHINE Filed Nov. 28. 1927 men/0r:

PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM F. HELMOND, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO UNDERWOOD ELLIOTT FISHER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION'OF DELAWARE "rvrnwm'rme MACHINE Application filed November 28, 1927. Serial No, 236,124.
This invention relates to carbon-holding devices for typewriting machinesof the kind or type for writing upon a continuous web comprising a plurality of plies which may be in the form offan-folds, such, for example, as the typewriting machine forming the subject of the patent to Wernery & Smith, N 0. 1,132,055, of March 16, 1915, and more particularly the present invention is an improvement upon the carbon-holding device disclosed in the patent to J esse'A. B. Smith, No. 1,177,546, of March 28, 1916, .for typewriting machines.
The machine disclosed in the Smith pat ent includes a carbon-carrying blade which holes in the blade-bracket and a separatelymounted blade-manipulating finger-piece. In practice, these pins are mounted close together, being spaced about it; of an inch apart, and it is necessary that. they be very accurately positioned;the pins are so close together that it is extremely diificult to prevent side'play in the blade which must be held stationary and in parallel relation with respect to the platen to insure the correct positioning of the carbon-paper. It will also be noted that variations in spacing between the blade-pins and holes in the blade-brackets require enlargement of the holes or reduction of the pin-diameter, thusmaking it difficult to provide interchangeable blades, due to increasing the play in the mounting of the blade; because of the extreme accuracy in spacing required between the blade-pins and corresponding bracket-holes, interchangeability is impossible'except at a great cost of production.
' The primary object ofthe .present invention is to improve and simplify the construction and mounting of the carbon-carryingblade on the supporting bracket, to facilitate the positioning and securing of the blade against play, and in parallelism with respect to the platen of the typewriter and so that x the blades may be interchangeably positioned on the bracket. The construction includes a wider bracket, providing for a greater spread between the blade-pins and brac ketholes; the space between the pins and holes is increased to an inch instead of of an inch The blade is provided with a single downwardly-extending pin which can be fitted "with just enough clearance to enter a hole in the bracket, which preventssagging of the blade. Upon an upper extension of this pin, a blade-manipulating finger-piece is secured, and, between the blade and this fingerpiece, a carbon-sheet-clamping mem her is pivotally mounted. The bracket is provided with an upstanding pin in spaced relation to the hole therein, and is engaged by the sides of a bifurcated end of the blademember formed by an inwardly-extending slot, so that the sides thereof closely engage the pin, the slot extending sufficiently to take care of any variation in the distances between the pins and holes of different brackets. This arrangement avoids the necessityfor the extreme accuracy in interchangeably spacing the two pins and the two 1 holes.
An advantage of the construction is the ready interchangeability of blades, since it is an easy matter to make the single pin and slot of the blades interchangeable withthe vantage of the construction resides in the reduction-of the number of parts on the blade by utilizing a single blade-mounting pin, upon an upward extension of whichthe carbonc-sheet-clamping member is mounted, and
the blade-manipulating finger-piece thereon fold typewriting machine having the present improvements applied thereto.

bracket-hole and locating pin. A further ad Referring to the accompanying drawings, the rearward extension 11 of an Underwood fan-fold typewriting machine is provided with rails 12 upon which a reciprocating carhon-carriage 13 travels in the usual manner and is provided with an operating handle 13,- as disclosed in the Wernery & Smith patent hereinbefore referred to. The typewriter-platen is generally indicated b the reference letter P, and the fan-fold we and interleaving carbon-sheets by the letters W and C respectivel On the ends of the reciprocatin carboncarriage are stepped brackets 14 an 15, upon which carbon-carrying blades 16 and 17 are mounted; the blades 16 being mounted on the left-hand bracket- 14 and the blades 17 on the right-hand bracket 15 at the right-hand end of the carriage. The blades 16 and 17 are arranged to extend towards each other and overlap in the usual manner, and, preferably in practice, blades 16 are positioned above blades 17, the levels of the steps on brackets 15 not being quite as high as those of brackets 14 for that purpose.
As best shown in Figure 3, the left-hand bracket 14: is provided with a portion 18 extending to the left thereof, so as to materially increase the transverse dimension of each step 19, which step is provided with a hole 20 adjacent to its inner or. right-hand end, and a pin 21 on the extending left-hand portion thereof. The bracket 15 is similarly constructed, but the extending portion is to the right side instead .of to the left side, as will be readily understood. The drilling of the-holes 20 and the drilling of the holes for thedriven-in pins 21 in each bracket 14 and 15 may be done in the usual manner at one operation with a gig for hole-spacings of approximate accuracy without recourse to fine gaging operations with their associated limits for tolerance.
Each carbon-blade 16 comprises a longitudinal member having a downwardly-extending pin 22 adjacent to its left-hand end, which is fitted for a running-fit to enter one of the holes 20 in the bracket 14, and the extreme end of the blade-member is provided with a bifurcating slot 23, which closely engages the sides of a corresponding pin 21 on the extending ortion of the bracket, the slot 23 being cut eep enough to provide a slight end clearance space 2 1 to the right of the pin 21, as indicated in Figure 1, so that the blade may be readily and interchangeably positioned on any of the steps 19 of difierent brackets without requiring extreme accuracy in the positioning of the pins 21 with respect to the holes 20 of these brackets. Blades 17 which, passed through a hole in the blade 16 and through a hole of corresponding diameter rpaaeae in the finger-piece 26, is terminally riveted in said finger piece where a hole 26 of lar er diameter is provided. An integral co ar 26" on the finger-piece forms a pivot on which the clip 25 is swingable for clamping a carbon C on said blade, while the finger-piece facilitates manipulation of the blade when mounting the latter on the bracket-member. The pin 22 provides a mounting member for the blade and the blade, with the assembled finger-piece and clip-member, becomes a stock-unit, thereby materially reducing the number of loose parts for the final assemblyoperations.
The clip 25 is capable of swinging rear wardly away from the blade-member to permita carbon-sheet C to be placed thereon with the end of the sheet doubled so as to extend on both sides of the blade-member. The blade-member is preferably provided with two or more spaced slots 27, and the clip with correspondingly-spaced detents or tongues 28 for engaging in said slots when the clip is in sheet-holding position, whereby both the clip and carbon-sheet are securely held. The spacing of the clamping members formed by the slots and detents provides a plurality of holding means along one end of the carbon-sheet, which positively insures the holding thereof in a manner so that the carbon will not be twisted sidewise with respect to the blade during the manipulation of the fan-fold web W and the carbon-stripping operations.
The free ends of the carbon-blades may be provided with usual web-slitters 29 when desired, and the slitters of the right-hand blade 17 may extend into clearance slots or notches 30 formed in the bracket 14. The
slitters on blades 16 extend over the underlying right-hand blades 17 mounted on the bracket 15 and are supported by-the latter. blades.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
