Description

Feb. 25, 1930. J. CHESNUT BUOYANT SEAT FOR CHILDREN Filed Aug. 15, 1929 In venior JOY/7 .C%cd/7uf A iiomeu (p s d Feb, 25, 1930 'UNi v Ars' JOHN OHESNUT, F CLEARWATER, FLORIDA BUOYANT SEAT non cnrnnnnn Application filed August 15, 1929. Serial No. 386,134.
1 This invention relates to buoyant seats, and has as its primary object the provision of a buoyant-seat as especially adapted to comfortably support achild in the water in an upright position in order to permit the child'to safely paddle about. in the water 7 without the assistance or continual care of 7 an adult.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a seat especially constructed for holding a child, the seat being supported in a novel and dependable manner by an inner tube and arranged concentrically of the tube.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more readily present themselves during a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawlIlgSk-f i Figure 1 is a top plan view of a seat constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View taken therethrough. i
. Figure 3 is a side or edge elevation.
Referring more particularlyto the drawings, it will be seen that the present inven tion comprehends the provision of an inflated tube designated generally by the reference character 5, and'this tube 5 may if desired be in the nature of an ordinary inner tube, the same being provided with the usual valve 6. Supported. concentrically of the inner tube 5 is an annulus or wood ring6. Diverging. rods 77 have their inner converging ends hingedly secured as at 88 to the underface of the'ring 6 at spaced points of the ring. At their outer or, diverging ends the rods 77 are'adapt'ed to rest on the inner tube 5 at opposite sides of the valve 6. Adjustable straps 99 are disposed about the inner tube, and these straps at their ends are suitablysecured to the said ends of the rods 7-7 for maintaining the rod secured to the innertube. A suitablyshaped seat 10 is suspended from the ring 6 through the mediuni' of adjustable'strap's 11. Preferably there arethree ofsuch straps 11, two secured tothe seat at opposite sides thereof rearwardly of the seat, and one secured to the 59 seat forwardly of the seat as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. Secured to and projecting laterally from the ring 6 forwardly of the seat 10 is a suitable tray 12. A rod or bar 13 similar-to the bar 7 has its inner end hinged as at 14 to the bottom of the tray 12. At its outer end the bar or rod 13 is disposed across the tube 5 and is secured to-the tube through the medium of an adjustable strap 15, in substantially the same manner as the rods 7-7 are secured to the tube.
Although Ihave shown the buoyant body of the body as in the nature of an inner tube, it will be readily appreciated that separable and independent buoyant body may be secured to the outer ends of the rods 7 and 13 for maintaining the ring 6 and seat 10 in a suitable position on the surface of the Water.
As is apparent, a child may be seated upon the seat 10, and the ring 6 will be disposed circumjacent about the body of the child, so that the tray 12 is in front of the child, and that the ring 6 williaid in maintaining the child in an upright position upon the seat. It will be also seen, that the child When so seated will be comfortably positioned and permitted to stick out of and turn in the Water with his feet.
Manifestly, when not in use the inner tube 5 may be readily detached from the rods 7 and 13, so that the inner tube may be deflated and the said rods 7 and 13 folded inwardly to be disposed so as to intersect one another crosswise of the ring 6 beneath or against the underface of the ring, thus providing a neat and handy unit of a small compass so as to be conveniently carried from place to place.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by, the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I wish to claim as new is 1. In combination an inner tube, a ring, a plurality of supporting bars hingedly secured at one end to said ring at predetermined spaced points on said ring, means for detachably securing the free end of said supporting bars to said inner tube at spaced circumferential points on the tube for supporting said ring Within the confines of said inner tube, a seat, and flexible sustaining means secured to said seat and said ring.
2. A buoyant seat for children comprising in combination, an inner tube, a ring, a tray carried by said ring and project laterally from said ring, a pa1r of supporting bars hingedly secured at one end to said ring at spaced points on the ring, straps engageable with the free end of said bars for disposition about said inner tube for detachably securing the said free end of said bars tosaid inner tube, an additional supporting Y bar hingedly secured at one end to said tray,
and strap members carried :by the last mentioned supporting bar and engageable with said tube, and a seat suspended from said ring. 7' a In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN CHESNUT.
