Description

Feb. 18, 1930. H. MARSH v .DOBBY FINGER AND SUPPORT Filed July 1'7, 1929 lnvenror; Harold Marshbyxzmmlw I I Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED TA -PATfiNT OFFICE MARSH, F: HOPEDALE, MASSAQHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO DRAPER CORPORA- i Q'TIOLL'QE HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE I DOBBY- FINGER AND SUPPORT invention relates to dobby mechanisms for looms having a plurality of indicating fingers which are operate by a pattern.
reasons the fingers must from time to time be.
repleeed er reme-vede I de to a time and avoid inconvenience it is desirable that when such removal and replacement takes place the remaining fingers shall not be disturbed. It is alsodesirablethat under norreal running een l tiens th fingers ha t f LCting pivot at their fulcrum point and ere tha s firm ene to P e m g of the fingejs when t ey are lifted by the p ns en; the patt rn. c ai n is the Qbject Qfthis invention to provide a simple and efficient meansfor mounting the indicator fingers and one which will allow the ready removal replacement of any finger; Wit out nter er g i or cau i g the rem n ng fing s ge o t of djus Affnrther object ofthe invention is to secure the above results without the necessity of employing additional elements or tem porary supporting means for the remaining 7 fingers, when one is to be removed or replaced.
The object of the invention is further to provide a two part shaft upon which the finge s pivet which mally'ha a tru irthe invention will more fully appear from he aeeemp'a yi e descrip i n an a n an w ll be Part larly po n ed ou in he Qnly th t need Tn f t e by echanism "whcl .h de ay eeneerns' he nov l ment is ill t d i he d aw ng T e genera shamans -t e by m chanisms i Wel knewn is a e skill d in the art and du t A p ca on. t Ju 1? 1 2a Ser N erase the nature of the invention it may be applied to a variety of dobby constructions. Hence only a portion of typical dobby mechanism is shown together with a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a partial View in vertical cross section through a dobby mechanism illustrating in particular the constructionof the pivot point for the indicator fingers. FFig, 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22 Fis- 3 i a deta d ew ing t method of removing an indicator finger? The dobby comprises the usual frame construction upon which the various elements are mounted. The side members 1 are connected by suitable transverse members which include the usual front bar 2. The indicating fingers 3 are arranged closely together in a transverse group and each areof a simllarshape with they exception of their rear portions' As to that portion they have alternately one of two forms of construction. One set of lingers have a straight rear port-ion 4 which engages liftingrods 5 which in turn control the upper hooks not shown. The rear portion 6 or the other set of fingers are turned upward slightly to directly engage and control the hooks 7. hese indicator fingers are actuated by pins 8 upon the usual pattern chain.
The pattern chain is moved byv means of a grooved drum 9 upon a shaft 10 which is rotated to bring the pins into contact with the proper fingers which raises the front end thereof causing the rear portion to be depressed thus lowering the hooks 7 into the pathof thereciprocating knife 11 which tuates that particular-harness connected to the hook in a. manner well known to those skilled in the art.
The invention resides chiefly in the method of supperti g the fingers within, the frame- At their forward e s he finger rest upon e bar 2 and are tulc umed up n a specially const uc ed. shaft 12- The cen er of gravi o each finger is w ll forward of the in crum pointso that the forward ends of the fi ers normal y r st upe h ar 2 by gravi y The. shaft 12 is insta led in sid frame 1 in cylindrical apertures 13. The shaftitsclf is composed of two semi-cylindrical portions 14 and 15 which by reason of a snug fit in the v is a slot 19. v This slot is of a width to permit a finger to be removed from one of the. shaft. portions when the. other portion has been removed; However the slot is of such asize as to effectually prevent the removal of any finger when the two shaft portions are in place. The extreme simplicity and effectiveness of the. device greatly increase the efiiciency of the dobby. When the two shaft portions are in place and locked. against removal under no circumstances may the fingers be removed. It makes no d fference 1n what positlon about its axis the shaft 18 maybe, each finger at all times will be securely prevented from jumping on the shaft or becoming disengaged therefrom. i 1 I As a result of this construction the accuracy of operation of the dobby is greatly increased.
This assurance thatthe device will function positively is obtained at no sacrifice to the smoothness of action of the pivot point of the reason that the fulcrum points consist of cylindrical bearings running upon a true cylindrical shaft. I i
To remove and replace a finger which has been broken or for any reason itis'desired to remove a finger it is merely necessary to remove the locking pin'17 and withdrawone of the shaft sections. The remaining section will serve to support the remaining fingers while the faulty one may be withdrawn by, lifting it off the shaft. Preferably theshaft ispositioned so'that it will not lee-necessary to rotate it to bring the fiat sidesof the sections parallel with the sides of the slot 19; I This may be secured by having the end 1610f the shaft section, as 14, that is to remainin place extend between lugs 20 on the side frame member 1 and by having a cotter pin 21 in the lugs. This will position both shaft sect-ions but leave one section, as 115, free to be with-' drawn while the section 14 will remain in the position required forremoval and replacement of the fingers. Thissection 14 will pass through the slot as the finger is lifted off and a newone may then be replaced thereon.
While, as illustr ted, the shaft portions are shownof semi-cylindrical cross section, these two portions may present different segmental cross sections so long as they together form,
; turbing the remainder.
an outer cylindrical'shaft and theslots in the indicating fingers may be made of a width to correspond with the thicknessof eithersegmental portion.
Having thus described theinvention, What by Letters Patent, is: f
