MANACLE Filed May 8, 1928 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Feb. 11, 1930 PATENT' QFFICE MERL'E AVERY GILL, OF KAI\TSAS CITY, MISSOUEI MANACLE Application filex May 8, 1928.
One object of the present iiwentioii is to provide a. manacle which may be conveniently carried end handled and Which embodies two mating platee having spaced arms ab opposite ends, the plates being spaced apart by spaced bloeks which form a chamber within the manacle end in Which chamber are mounted two spring acsuated pawl's adapted to projeet nonnally outwardly between the spaced blocks into the space between the respective spaced arms to coact with locking levers pivotally mount-ed ai the outer ends of said a1n13 ho operate between the respeccive spaced a1ms, one of said blocks forming stops to limit said outward movement oi said pawls and against which stops the pawls bear end relieve the pawls of strains in the event of an outward strain upon the locking levers, and the other of said biocks forming stops io be engaged by the pawls to limit inward movement of the pawls when the latter are shifted from coacting locking relation with the locking levers.
Another object of' the invention resides in the provision ci e, manaeie embodying among other charaeteristics a body portion having spaced arme et opposite ends and in Which body poriion there is included spaced blocks forming a chamber in which are pivotaily mounted pmvis projeeted normaliy outward- 1y from the chamber under the influence of a single floating spring located in said chamber end engaging said pawls to maintain the pznvls normally in the path 0f movement 0f iocking levers pivotally mounted in the enter ends of said spaced arms fo1 operation between the respective spaced arms and for coaetion with the paw1s to efl"ect an automatic loeking connection between the levers end pawls, one of said blocks limiting movement of the pawis in their outward movement and the other block limiting movemen of the pawls in the opposite direction.
VVit-h these and other objects in vi'ew, che invention consists in the construction and novel combination end arrangemenc of parts hereinafter fully described, iilustrated inthe accompanying drawings, and set forh in the claims hereto appended, it being understood thai; various changes in the form, propor- Seriai No. 276,071.
cion, end minor details of construcion, W.ihin che scope of the claims, may be resort-ed to Withouv; departing from the spirit of the i11- vention or sacrifieing any of the advantages ibereof. The invention is illusrated in che accompenying drawing in Which Figure 1 is a front view of the manacles Wiih one side place removed shovving the iocking device with the locking levers in the locked position. Figure 2 shows the removeo side plate With the rivet hoies, pivot 'p"n holes, end key i0le punched therein. Figure 3 shows the type of key used for unlooking the levers of the lnanacles.
n Figure 1 the two locking ievers l 1, are adapted to be revolved in a, complee circle, simulcaneously 01 independently of each 0the1 in the direction of the dotteci lines 2 2, in betwen the two supportin side plates 3 8,
illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The said loeking levers are semicircular shaped end revoive on. the pivot pins i 4:, and are providecl with a suit'able number of ratchet teech 5 5, in the outside circle of their free ends that are acapted te operate in conjunction Wih che latehing pznvls 6 6, sad pawis operating on the pivot pins 7 7, positioned in betvreen said supportin side plates. The said iaching pawls are normally operated by che spring 8, said spring, as shown, having a. compiete round-turn in the centet 03 the spring to make it more pliable. The spring 8 is ci common orm and has it's free ends connected te the pawls 6,6i11 any common manner. "The spring is further secured inpiace after the manacles are assembled, by vircue 01'' the iae; bbat the side plaes prevent che spring 'i0m noving from one side to the other. Any suitable type of common spring may be empioyed for cooperation With che pawls 6, 6 io eii"ect the necessary 'uncions 'herein de-, SCbBC]. for the saidiatching pawls.
A suitable shaped bloek 9, is provided (o act as an upper spacer block and to prevent che said pawls from being pressed upwa'rd zoo far when the said locking levers are in the unlocked po'sition,- saicl block aiso preventing the pawls from being tampered With from the top of che ma1iacles. Another sitable shaped block 10, is provided to act as a lower spacer block and to prevent the latching pawls from being tampered with from the bottom of the manacles. Tl1e slot 11, cui; thru the supportng sde plate 3, illustrated in Figure 2, is provided for the entrance of the key, illustrated in Figure 3, for unlockng said levers. The key, when t s turned to the right or left, catches under the inside ends of the pawls 6 6, end draws the outer ends or teeth of said pawls from out of the ratchet teetl1 5 5, in the lockng levers 1 l, thereby unlocking sad levers. Tl1e semicircular arms on the side plates 3 8, as tl1e (lobi-ed lines 12 12, in Figures 1 and 2 show, are formed in the general shape of the wrists, thumbs, lztqg'ers anlcles, or other part Wh:lel1 these manacles are adapced to be used on.
I Claino:
1. In manaeles, a pair of mating plates baving spaced arme a-t opposte ends spaced blocks arranged between the plates a pair of latchng pawls pvocally mouned wthin the plates between sad blocks, a, spring havi ng ts opposte ends bearing against the pewls for normally throwng the pawls outwardly bo project the outer ends of the pawls into the space between tbe respectve spaced arms, end locking levers pvotally mou'nted on the outer ends of sad spaced ar1ns and freely revoluble between the said arms and the mating plates nto coacting loekng relaton Wth said latching pawls,- the pawls having nner end portions engageable by a key adapted t o operate the devce for movng the pawls se- I leotvely to release sad loeking levers, one of sad blocks forming stops to limit th, Said outward movement of said pawls and the other of said blocks fomni ng stops to be engaged by t-he pawls to lmt nward movement of the pawls when the latter are shifted from C oaetng locki ng relzltion wtl1 the lockng levers.
2. In manacles, a pair of matng plates havng spaced arms at opposte ends, spaced blocks arranged between the platee, a pair of lat ching pawls pvotally mounted wthn the plates between said spaced bloeks, means for swngng tl1e latching pawls to normally orce their outer ends outwardly between sad blocks and into the space between the respeetive arms, end loeking levers pvotally mounted on the ouer ends of said spaced arms end freely revoluble between the said arms and the mat-ng platee into coactng lockng relaton wth sad latchng pawls, the pawls havng nner end portons engageable by a key adapted to operate the devce ;for movng the pawls to release said lockng levers, one of said blooks being recessed to form stops for engagement by said pz1wls to lmt the aforesad omtward movement of the latter and the other of said blocks beng recessed to forno stops engageable by the che pawls when the latter are sl1ifted fron1 coacting relation wth the levers.
3. A clevce of the character deseribed co1n prsing a pair of mating plates including body portons end ntegral arm portions forming seats for wrsts or the lke, spaced blocks spacng the body portons of the platee so fbrm the body of the devce and space the arms of one plate from the arms of the other plate to form pars of s'paced arms, said spaced blocks forming a chamber in the body, latching pawls pivotally mounted on the body in sad chamber and each pawl havng a tooth, means for, yeldably projecting the teeth of the pawls nto t-he space between the respectve spaced arme, a lever pvotally mounted on the outer end of eaeh par of arms end freely revoluble between t-he arme and havng teeth for coacton wth th e said toothed pawls to effect a lockng connectionbecween {che respeetive pawls and the respective levers, said pawls being stopped from noyement in one directon by one of the aforesaid bloeks end sad pawls beng stopped from myement in the opposte direction by the other of sad blocks.
In testimony whereof I aflx my si natu re.
