Engines in which the inlet and outlet for the high pressure cylinder as well as for the low pressure cylinder are governed by a common valve, it is true, are known, however, from the known valve gears or steam distribuasmuch as bythe latter only one portion of theexhaust steam flows back by thepassage into the valve casing. A steam distribution system for compound engines comprising high and. low pres sure cylinders, pistons in said cylinders, a valve casing comprising a high pressure inlet port, one port at each end of the high pressure cylinder, one port at each end of the lowpressure cylinder, and an exhaust port at each end of the casing, and a single valve in said casing controlling communication of said high pressure inlet port with each of said high pressure cylinder ports, of each of said highipressure cylinder ports with a corresponding low pressure cylinder port, and of each low pressurecylinder port with a corresponding exhaust port. i 7
