This invention relates to improvements in carrying cases, with special reference to such as are made from sheet material, as cardboard, indurated fiber and the like such cases being used extensively in carrying suits .of clothing, etc., due to their light weight,

strength and convenience.

Such cases or boxes are usually of one or two piece construction, formed from fiat 1o blanks stored compactly .in a minimum of space and rovided with creases, and interengaging eatures by which the sides and ends are held in operative relation when the box is prepared for use, the box being bound by cords and provided with separate carrying handles. a y

In the present invention it is an object to provide-a blank having integral connecting means whereb the use of cords and like securing means 1s completely avoided.

A further feature is in the provision of an integral handle by which the case may be conveniently and comfortably carried in the h d- Another purpose is to produce a handle that can be used in connection with ordinary cases provided with appropriate receiving means and which acts as an efiective lock therefor.

These several advantageous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting-an important feature of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carrying case made in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away to show the construction.

Referring to the blank as shown in Figure 1, it will be seen to be generally an elongated rectangle, presenting two main portions 10 and 11 constituting the sides of the case,

Other creases 15 and 16 demark the tops 17 and 18 which, as will later be seen, are superposed when the case is prepared for use, these top elements being sheared at their ends to register with creases 19-19 and 20-20 disposed at the ends of the sides 10 and 11 demarking the end members 21-21 and 22-22 of the case. 6

The crease 12 is extended through the e. d members 21-21 to produce lower corner members 23-23, which are sheared at v 24-24= from the bottom 14 and also at their ends in register with the crease line 13. l. i

The crease 15 is also extended across the ends 21-21 to produce hook-like engaging tabs 25-25 and the crease 16 is likewise ex tended through the end elements 22-22 to produce similar hook tabs 26-26 at their outer ends, while the inner ends of the elements 22-22 are sheared to produce tabs 27-27, the same being entrable in angular slits 28-28 in the end elements, 21-21 when the case is set up.

The book tabs 25-25 are at that time engaged in the slits 29-29 in the top 17 and correspondingly, the tabs 26-26 engage in slits 30-30 in the top member 18.

From the foregoing it will be seen that aso box has been formed having interlocking side, end and top members which will retain its shape and carry considerable weight without distortion or separation of its parts, no adhesive, cords or other extraneous fastening means bein employed.

In addition, t ere is an extension 31 connected to one of the top members, as 17, by a crease 32, the extension being essentially half the length of the member 17 and equivalent to it in width, except at its arcuately curved, central outstanding portion 33, the ends of which are continued into the extension by curved slots 34.

A crease line 35 extends lengthwise of the extensionat approximately the center of its width and a second crease 36 is formed parallel therewith, in alinement with the outer edge of the extension, the crease 36 being at the outer edge of a handle opening 37, the

part 38 being sheared at its rounded end edges and also along the crease so as to be folded closely against the handle element 33 when in operative position.

.Formedcentrally in the top'member 17 isa narrow longitudinal slot 39 having rounded ends tending to prevent tearing and a similar slot 41 having rounded ends 42 is formed in the top member 18.

In assembling the case, the extension 31 is folded on the top member 17, at the crease 32, and bent on the. crease 35 to permit the handle member 33 to extend outwardly through the slot 39 and also the slot 41, superposed in register thereover, and the handle member 33 is turned upward, leaving the opening 37 free toreceive the hand of a carrier'whereby the case may be easily transported.

Thus the sides are effectively locked together b the handle member 33, acting as a bolt, an due to the fact that the extension 31, except at its arcuately curved central portion forming the handle member 33, is equivalent in width to that of top member 17, the top members 17, 18, are simultaneously secured and reinforced where the pull is the greatest, when the container is'closed; and due to the upturned element 38 a considerable weight may be carried comfortably.

The extension 31 may forman integral part of one element of an ordinary two piece carrycase or box.

in i In the form shown in Figure 3 the sides 10 and 11 of the case are shown as provided with top members 17' and 18 having slots 39'41', as previously described.

A separate plate element 45, in width equivalent to that of the members 17 '18, is

sheared at its center and bent to produce an upstanding element 46 to pass through the slots 39'-41' and is provided with a hand receiving opening 47.

Obviously the late elements 45-46 may be used as a reen orcement to the device described or in connection with a plain box by merely slotting the superposed top or cover elements.

It will be readily seen that no other type of carrying handle is required and that cords or other securing means are not necessary, the box maintainin itself in operative condition after having een assembled as indicated.

Although I have described my improvements with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may well be made without departing from the s irit and scope of my invention in its broa est aspect.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by. Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a container having two superposed top elements having re istering elongated slots, of a handle integra with one of said to ciated with sald handle to simultaneously reinforce and secure thetop elements when the container is closed.

2. In combination with a container having two superposed top elements having registering elongated slots, of a handle integral with one of said top elements, said handle being adapted to extend upwardly through the slots of said top elements, and means associated with said handle to simultaneously reinforce and secure the top elements when the container is closed.

3. In combination with a container having two superposed to members having regise tering elongated s ots, of an extension connected to'the lower of said top members, said extension being adapted, when folded on said lower top member to extend upwardly through the slots of said top members, to form a handle.

4. A case composed of a single sheet of material, said case having side members interengaged with end members, top members in superposed relation having registering elongated slots, and a handle integral with the lower of said top members said handle being adapted to be folded on said lower top member and extend upwardly through the slots of said top members.

5. A case composed of a single sheet of material, said case having side members interengaged with end members, top members in superposed relation having registering elongated slots, a handle integral with the lower of said top members, said handle being adapted to be folded on said lower top member and extend upwardly through the slots of said top members, andmeans associated with said handle to simultaneously secure and reinforce said top members, when the case is closed.

A case composed of a single sheet of material, said case having side members mterengaged with end members, top members in superposed relation havin registering elongated slots, and a handle integral with the lower of said top members and provided with a partly sheared portion to form a handle opening and an upturned element, sa d handle being adapted to be folded on said lower top member and extendupwardly through the slots of said top members, when of said top members and provided with a partly sheared portion to form a handle openmg and an upturned element, said handle being adapted to be folded on said lower top member and project upwardly through the elements, and'means assoslots of said top members, and means associated with said handle to simultaneously secure and reinforce said top members when the case is closed.

8. In combination with a container having two superposed top members provided with registering elongated slots, of an extension in tegral with the lower of said top members, a portion of said extension being adapted, when folded on said lower top member, to provide securing and reinforcing means for said top members, and the remaining portion of said extension being adapted, when projected upwardly through the slots of said top members, to form a carrying means.

9. A pattern for making a carrying case consisting of a single sheet of fiexible'material divided by score marks into a plurality of sections adapted to be folded on the score marks to form sides, ends, bottom, and two superposed top members having registering elongated slots, and an extension integral with the lower of said top members, a portion of said extension being adapted, when folded on said lower top member, to provide securing and reinforcing means for said top members, and the remaining portion of said extension being adapted, when projected upwardly through the slots of said top members, to provide a carrying means.

10. A pattern for making a carrying case consisting of a single sheet of flexible material divided by score marks into a plurality of sections adapted tobe folded on the score marks to form sides, ends, bottom, and two superposed top members having registering elongated slots, and an extension integral with the lower of said top members, said extension having end portions equivalent in width to the width of said lower top lnember and a central outstanding portion, said end portions being adapted to secure and reinforce said top members, and said central outstanding portion being, adapted to project upwardly through the slots of said top members,'to form a carrying means.

11. A pattern for making a carrying case consisting of a single sheet of flexible ma-- terial divided by score marks into a plurality of-sections adapted to be folded on the score marks to form sides, ends, bottom, and two superposed top members having registering elongated slots, and an extension integral with the lower of said top members, said extension having end portions equivalent in width tothe width of said lower top member,

and a curved central outstanding portion,

- provided with a partly sheared section to form a handle opening and an upturned element, said end portions being adapted to secureand reinforcesaid top members, and said central outstanding portion being adapted to project upwardly through the slots of said top members to form a carrying handle.
