Description
Jan. 21, 1930. s. B. RQBINETTE STRIPING BRUSH AND HOLDER Filed Feb. 2, 1929 Q I, (j; /5
Patented Jan. 21, 1936 STATES ATENT OFFICE SAMUEL B. RGBIITETTE, OE PRINCETGN, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEI-IALF TO CLIO TALIAEERRG PORTER, OE PRINCETON, WEST VIRGIN IA STRIPING BRUSH AND HOLDER Application filed February 2, 1829. Serial No. 337,100.
ral object of this invention is to 1 whereby a perfect stripe of n desired size, either double, single, nar- -*ow Oi broad may be laid either as means for in space between previously laid stripes or around the edges of ventilators, cut moulds or hands or in any position required, the striper eliminating the expense of employi g high priced painters to do the work by hand and perm an inexperienced person to do the worl; faster and more accurately than is possible by free hand brush.
I A further object is to provide a device of cter havii a brush support pronn a balancn portion or extension h, in actual practice, has been found to the device that a remarkably illlS can be pulled or orawn with u f any guiding device.
' object is to provide onnection support a guide plate carried upon the brush support and adjustable towhrd or from the same which may be engaged for instaice against the edge of a moulding to run a stripe parallel to this moulding.
Other objects will appear in the course of the followi description.
lily "ivou n is illustrated in the accompanving drawing, wherein Fig-are l is a side elevation of a striping brush and holder constructed in accordance with inv invention;
in 2 a similar view to Figure 1, but
' slde of the device;
view of the device. drawing designates 'ush holder which is .1, l metal nearly recand having a straight is plate at its rear upper .121 12 which is curved rd and then slightly xtension being the same o 1G. The forward edge o as to extend down- The brush to be =der comprises a ferrule 14c a the brush hai 15, his brush portion proper being prefera ily of camels hair with the brush cut more or less on a diagonal line upward toward the rear edge of the brush ferrule.
The plate 10 may be provided with outwardly extending stud bolts but, as illustrated, screw bolts 16 pass through apertures in the plate 10 and through a guide plate 17 which has approximately the same form as the plate 10 but does not have any extension 12. This guide plate is spaced from the plate 1% by means of inner nuts 18.
Exteriorly of the plate 17, the screw bolts 16 are provided with nuts 19 so as to hold the plate 17 firmly in place. The plate 17 is preferably vertically slotted as at 20 for the passage of the screw bolts 16 and so as to permit the plate to be adjusted up or down.
in the use of this device, the brush consisting of the ferrule 14L and the brush hairs l5 shoull be worked out in paint to the right consistency. The brush is then laid on the outer face of the plate 10' so that the hairs will project slightly beyond the lower edge of the plate. The paint will cause the brush to adhere to the plate. The device is then taken in the right hand with the thumb of the right hand bearing against the brush ferrule 14: and the implement is drawn toward the operator in order to form the stripe. The size of the stripe is easily regulated by raising or lowering the thumb. here the guide plate is used, it is adjusted to any desired width from the plate 10 either so that the guide plate will engage against the outer edge of a moulding or so that the moulding will be embraced between the guide plate and the plate 10. The guide plate as before remarked can be lowered so as to catch the edge of mouldings or hoods of ventilators.
A. large variety of stripes and lines can is produced with this device by increasing or decreasing the pressure upon the brush. l Vhen the plate 10 is separated from the guide plate 17 sutliciently so as to catch the edges of the moulding of an automobile body and by using a wide and soft brush between the two plates, the striper may be used to paint the entire moulding, the edges of the plates 10 and 17 preventing the paint from spreading to the body in which the moulding is formed and assuring a clean smooth edge.
A further important feature of this device is the extension 12. Inasmuch as the device is so balanced by the long curved extension, a remarkably straight line can be pulled with out the guide plate.
This device has been used particularly for striping automobiles and is found to be particularly effective in use.
While I have illustrated certain specific form-for the device and certain details of construction, I do not wish to be limited to these as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A striping device comprising a pressure supporting plate having a rearward extension acting as a balance, the plate having a flat brush supporting face, and a fiat thin striping brush adapted to be disposed against said plate and having a thin flat, ferrule adapted to be held in place against the plate by the thumb of the operator.
2. A striping device comprising a pressure supporting plate having a rearward extension acting as a balance, the plate having a fiat brush supporting face, a brush adapted to be disposed against said plate and held in place thereon by the thumb of the operator, and a guide plate disposed parallel to the first named plate and in spaced relation thereto, on the opposite side from the brush supporting face of the plate.
3. A striping device comprising a pressure supporting plate having a rearward extension acting as a balance, the plate having a flat brush supporting face, a brush adapted to be disposed against said plate and held in place thereon by the thumb of the operator, and a guide plate disposed parallel to the first named plate and in spaced relation thereto on the opposite side of the plate from the brush supporting face, said guide plate being adjustable toward or from the first named plate.
4:. A striping device comprising a pressure supporting plate having a rearward extension acting as a balance, the plate having a fiat brush supporting face, a brush adapted to be disposed against said plate and held in place thereon by the thumb of the operator, and a guide plate disposed parallel to the first named plate and in spaced relation thereto and on the opposite side of the first-named plate from the brush supporting face, said guide plate being adjustable toward or from the first named plate and adjustable in a plane parallel to the plane of the first named plate.
5. A striping device of the character described, comprising a fiat plate adapted to support a brush upon one face with the edge of the brush projecting below the edge of the plate, the plate having bolts projecting outwardly from the face of the plate opposite to the brush supporting face thereof, nuts disposed upon the bolts, a vertically slotted guide plate mounted upon the bolts and en gaged by the nuts to hold the guide plate in place.
6. A striping device of the character described, comprising a fiat plate adapted to support a brush with the edge of the brush projecting below the edge of the plate, the plate having bolts projecting outward from the face of the plate opposite the brush supporting face thereof, nuts disposed upon the bolts, a vertically slotted guide plate mounted upon the bolts and engaged by the nuts to hold the guide plate in place, the first named plate havin an upwardly and rearwardly curved extension having a thickness the same as that of the plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
AMUEL B. ROBINETTE.
