This invention has for its object a firing apparatus intended especially for furnaces of the semi-producer type as for instance welding and forging furnaces.
An apparatus according to one embodin'lent of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2,

Fig. 3 is a sectional view with the right hand portion taken on substantially the line 33, Fig. 1 and left hand portion taken on substantially the line 33 Fig. 1.
Arranged adjacent the furnace there is provided a hopper or receptacle a in which sufficient coal or other fuel may be stored up to last for a considerable period, as for instance twenty-four hours. The hopper is connected with the furnace by a tube 3 in which a screw Z) is arranged adapted to be rotated thereby feeding fuel into the furnace. The said tube opens into the furnace at the top of same, so that when the furnace is working fuel is fed in above the fuel which is already present in the fire place.
The hopper has at its top a cover 0 adapted to be manipulated from the ground and for this purpose the cover 0 is pivoted and has ri l therewith a lever 24 to the ends of which are connected pulls 5. By pulling downwardly on either of the pulls 5 the cover 0 may be opened or closed. Between the hopper and the tube 3 provided with a feeding screw 6 there is a gate (Z operated by a screw and hand-wheel, and by closing the said gate the heat from the furnace may be prevented from penetrating through the fuel in the hopper. The gate (Z has rigid therewith a screw-threaded member 10 which has screw-threaded connection with a sleeve 11 suitably journalled in a support 12, said sleeve being provided with a hand wheel 13 by which it may be turned.
The shaft of the feeding screw is cooled by water. The rotation of the screw is effected by a friction pawl e acting upon a friction wheel 4 fixed to the shaft of the screw Z). The pawl e is connected to a rocking lever 5 which is actuated by a link 6 leading to any source of power.
The floor of the furnace slants forwardly and downwardly. Mounted on the floor are slag removers g, each of which has a notched or saw-toothed upper face 14 with the shorter faces of the notches extending substantially vertically and directed forwardly. These slag removers are reciprocated in the direction of their length on the floor f, or from right to left and vice versa, Fig. 1. The furnace is made with a receptacle 2' beneath the floor and with an opening around the lower end of the floor which forms a communication between the combustion chamber and the receptacle 2'. Any slag which is produced during the combustion of the fuelwillbe raked out of the combustion chamber by the reciprocating movement of the slag removers and will be delivered into the receptaclei over the lower front edge of the floor. This receptacle 2' may be partially filled with water and it provides awater trap. into which the slag is thus deposited and from which it may. be removed without the run being interrupted. In the wall of the furnace behind the slag removers there is achamber extending downwards behind the bottom of the fire place in such a manner that slag may escape from the furnace, the slag being thereby prevented from caking together.
The floor 7 is provided with slots 7 and each slag remover is formed on its under side with two teeth h which extend through the slots. These downwardly-extending teeth 72. engage arms Z adapted to rock to and fro, thereby imparting to the slag removers their reciprocating motion. The arms Z are fixed to parallel shafts adapted to be rocked thereby imparting to the arms their rocking motion. The shafts of the arms of two adjacent slag removers are operatively connected in such a manner that when one shaft rocks in one direction the other shaft rocks in opposite direction.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing there are for instance three slag removers and the arms of the two outer slag removers are fixed to a common shaft m, while the arm of the intermediate slag remover is fixed to another shaft n. The two shafts are connected with each other by means of a gearing 8, an oscillating motion being imparted to one of the shafts by means of a bar 0 being reciprocated by a wheel 7) moving slowly,
p'ovision being made whereby its speed may controlled.
The wheel p and the ratchet e producing the motion of the feeding screw are preferab lIy both driven by an electric motor.
he described and shown details may be varied in many ways without departing from the scope of the invention. Thus for instance several tubes may be located between the hopper and the furnace.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A furnace comprising a combustion chamber having a floor which inclines forwardly and downwardly, said chamber having an opening at the front end of the floor, slag removing members supported on said floor for reciprocating motion, said slag removers being spaced a considerable distance apart and each slag remover having a sawtoothed upper surface with the vertical faces of the teeth directed forwardly, and means for reciprocating adjacent slag removers in opposite directions, whereby the slag will be forced forwardly and delivered over the front end of the floor.
2. A furnace structure comprising a combustion chamber having a floor which slants forwardly and downwardly and is provided with slots, said combustion chamber having an opening at the forward end of the floor, slag removers mounted on the floor, each slag remover having a saw-toothed upper surface with the vertical face of each tooth directed forwardly and also having on its under side two teeth which extend through one of the slots, two parallel shafts beneath the floor, arms fast on said shafts, the arms on one shaft engagin the teeth on alternate slag removers and t ose on the other shaft engaging the teeth on the remaining slag removers, and means to rock the shafts simultaneously but in opposite directions.
3. A furnace structure com rising a combustion chamber having a oor provided with slots, said chamber having an opening at the forward end of the floor, slag removers mounted on the floor, each slag remover having a saw-toothed upper surface with the vertical face of each tooth directed forwardly and also having on its under side two teeth which extend through one of the slots, two parallel shafts beneath the floor, arms fast on said shafts, the arms on one shaft engaging the teeth on alternate slag removers and those on the other shaft engaging the teeth on the remaining slag removers, and means to rock the shafts simultanenously but in opposite directions, said furnace being provided with a basin beneath the floor containing water into which the slag is deposited.
