This invention relates to files of the class in which the sheets are arranged in overlapping relationship, and in which the sheet carriers are mounted in separately removable sockets, which remain attached to the supporting frame when the sheet carriers are removed from the latter.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, and to the embodiment of the invention which is illustrated therein, and having reference at first to-Fig. 1, there is shown a file comprising a series of overlapping sheets 10, each of which in the present example is folded as at 11. In the present example, the sheets are of comparatively light weight stock, and two identical sheets are nested together (see Fig. 6).
In this instance, each sheet is provided with perforations 12, herein adjacent the line 11 of the fold, and slightly elongated length wise of the latter. These perforations receive pivots 13 presented by a sheet carrier 14, herein conveniently formed of a piece of resilient wire bent (as best shown in Fig. 5) to form the pivots 13, which are directed toward each other, and have their free ends 1928. received within the fold of the innermost of the two nested sheets.
In this instance, there is provided a second series of sheets 15, herein of comparatively heavier stock, received within the folds of the innermost sheets 10, and conveniently mounted on the pivots 13, as by appropriate hinge pieces 16, best shown in Fig. 6, each having two arms 17 and 18, bet-ween which the sheet is received, the arm 18 being provided with one or more, herein a pair of lugs 19 received in perforations 20 provided in the sheet. The sheet 15 is conveniently removable from the carrier by bending or buckling the sheet to reduce its length, thereby to withdraw one of the hinge pieces from one of the pivots, after which the other hinge piece may be withdrawn from its pivot.
After the removal of the sheet 15, the sheets 10 may be removed from the carrier by bending or buckling them to reduce their length, thereby to withdraw one of the pivot-s 13 from its perforation 12, after which the other pivot may be withdrawn from its perforation.
Any one of the sheets when removed from its carrier, without the removal of the latter from the file, may be placed in the typewriter. The grouping of several sheets on each carrier increases the capacity of the file, without impairing the facility of removal and replacement of the sheets, and without making a bulky and cumbersome structure.
Each sheet carrier has its terminal portions received in sockets 21 (see Figs. 1 and 5), there being a series of pairs of these sockets supported by an appropriate support, herein a plate of sheet-metal bent to form a back 22, two side walls 23 and two front flanges 24, forming a pair of channels 25, in which the sockets are received. In the present example, each socket has spring means, herein a spring tongue 26, pressing against the inner surface of the front flange 24, and resisting movement of the socket in the channel. Herein, the socket is conveniently made of a piece of sheet-metal bent to provide four walls, one of which is the spring tongue 26, another a side wall 27, another a back wall 28, and another a wall 29, which is provided with an aperture 30, in which the terminal portion of the sheet carrier is received. In this example, the shape and dimensions of the aperture and of the end of the carrier are such that the carrier has no turning movement with relation to the socket. This is conveniently accomplished by making the aperture 30 as a narrow slot, whose width is only slightly greater than the diameter of the wire of which the carrier is made.
In this embodiment, the flange 24 slopes inwardly toward the back wall 22 of the frame, and the wall 29 projects outwardly beyond the free edge of the flange, but not beyond that part of the flange which adjoins the side walls 23. Thus, while the extremity of the wall 29 is rendered accessible for engagement by the finger to withdraw the socket rom the channel, yet the extremity of the wall does not present an obstruction, and does not increase the front-to-back thickness of the file. Herein, the shape and relationship of the spring tongue 26 to the flange 24 are such that the tongue yields and springs rearwardly when sufiicient force is applied to the projecting portion of the wall 29 to force the socket out of the channel, the spring tongue yielding downwardly as it passes beneath the edge of the flange.
Of course the cards 15 may be omitted if desired. On the other hand, when the cards 15 are used, the folded sheets 10 may be omitted. When both sets are used, the full capacity of the file is obtained. As shown in Fig. 3, the sheets 10 may be provided with,
perforations 31 along the line of the fold 11, to give them greater flexibility at this point.
Having thus described one embodiment of the invention, but without limiting myself thereto, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping sheets, a series of carriers by which said sheets are respectively carried, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket and its channel having cooperating means by which such socket is securely retained in its channel.
2. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket having yielding means by which it is normally retained in its channel.
3. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each channel having a narrowed lateral entrance and each socket being expansible and contractible to permit it to contract to enter said narrowed entrance and then to expand to prevent its accidental escape through said entrance.
4. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket be ing resiliently expansible and by reason thereof being retained in its channel.
5. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket having a wall disposed flatwise across the entrance of its channel and perforated to provide an aperture which faces a corresponding aperture in an opposite socket.
6. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket hav ing yielding means engaging the interior of its channel and yieldingly holding such socket therein, and each socket having a wall disposed flatwise across the entrance of its channel and perforated to provide an aperture which faces a corresponding aperture in an opposite socket.
7 In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket comprising a piece of sheet metal bent to provide a wall disposed flatwise across the entrance of its channel, such wall being perforated to provide an aperture which faces a corresponding aperture in an opposite socket.
8. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each channel having an entrance which is narrower than its interior, each socket comprising a piece of sheet metal bent to provide four walls, one of which has a resilient portion which is received within the interior of its channel and yield ingly resists removal of the socket therefrom, and one of which walls is disposed flatwise across said entrance and is perforated to provide an aperture which faces a corresponding aperture in an opposite socket.
9. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, each socket having a projection extending beyond its channel where it may be engaged by the finger to facilitate removal of such socket from such channel.
10. In a file, the combination of a series of pairs of sockets, and a frame having a back, side walls and two flanges forming a pair of channels which receive said pairs of sockets, the free edges of said flanges being inclined towards said back, said sockets having projections extending outwardly beyond said free edges.
11. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping sheets, a series of flexible carriers to which said sheets are respectively hinged, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, each carrier and its associated sockets having cooperating means to prevent turning of such carrier in such sockets, and
a support by which said sockets are supported.
12. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping sheets, a series of flexible carriers each presenting a pair of pivots having free ends directed toward each other, each sheet being pivoted on one pair of pivots and being removable therefrom by bending such sheet to reduce its length, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, each carrier being removable from its sockets by bending such t carrier to reduce its length to withdraw its ends therefrom, and a support by which said ckets are supported.
13. In a file, the combination of a series of er-lapping sheets, a series of flexible carriers each presenting a pair of pivots having free ends directed toward each other, each sheet being pivoted on one pair of pivots and being removable therefrom by bending such sheet to reduce its length, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, each carrier being removable from its sockets by bending such carrier to reduce its length to Withdraw its ends therefrom, each carrier and its associated sockets having cooperating means to prevent turning of such carrier in such sockets, and a support by which said sockets are supported.
14. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping sheets provided with perforations, a series of carriers presenting pivots received in said perforations, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, and a support by which said sockets are supported.
15. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping, folded sheets provided with perforations adjacent to their folds, a series of carriers presenting pivots received in said perforations and extending into said folds, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, and a support by which said sockets are supported.
16. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping, folded sheets provided with 50 perforations adjacent to their folds, a series of carriers presenting pivots received in said perforations and extending into said folds, another series of sheets received within said folds, respectively, hinge pieces pivoted on said pivots and attached to such other series of sheets, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, and a support by which said sockets are supported.
17. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping, folded sheets provided with perforations adjacent to their folds, a series of carriers presenting pivots received in said perforations and having free ends received in said folds, another series of sheets received within said folds, respectively, pairs of hinge pieces pivoted on said pivots and attached to such other series of sheets, said hinge pieces being detachable from said pivots by bending such other sheets to reduce the distance between the hinge pieces of each pair and to allow them to be slipped off said free ends, and means for supporting said carriers.
18. In a file, the combination of a series of overlapping, folded sheets provided with perforations adjacent to their folds, a series of carriers presenting pivots received in said perforations and having free ends received in said folds, another series of sheets received within said folds, respectively, pairs of hinge pieces pivoted on said pivots and attached to such other series of sheets, said hinge pieces being detachable from said pivots by bending such other sheets to reduce the distance between the hinge pieces of each pair and to allow them to be slipped ofi said free ends, a series of pairs of sockets, the sockets of each pair receiving the ends of one of said carriers, and a support by which said sockets are carried.
