Description

Jan. 21, 1930. F. H. GRANT BACKING FOR ARTIFICIAL TEETH Filed Feb. 192
51140014 501 jranczs fl. Gm, 6
Patented Jan. 21, 1930 UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANCIS H. GRANT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGANQASSIGNOR TO GRANT DENTAL MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN BACKING FOR ARTIFICIAL TEETH Application filed February 7, 1927. Serial No. 166,557.
The invention relates to artificial teeth backings designed particularly for use with interchangeable facings and has for some of its objects the provision as an article of manufacture of a standardized complete backing which with a facing approximates the weight of the natural tooth; the provision of a complete standardized backing so constructed that it readily conforms to the dies during forging; and the provision of identification means for the backing which may be formed during the forging and is so located that the liability of being accidentally destroyed is avoided and that the external shape of the backing is not affected. With these as well as other obj eots in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear elevations of a backing embodying my invention;
Figures 3 and 4; are respectively longitudinal and transverse sections therethrough with a facing attached.
As shown, 1 is the backing of the artificial tooth, this backing being a forged standard ized complete backing, and 2 is a standardized interchangeable facing of the artificial tooth corresponding in type and size to the backing and engageable therewith to form an artificial tooth of the approximate size and within the. limits of the replaced natural 5 tooth. The backing is formed from a gold or gold alloy ingot and has an external anatomically shaped surface 3, a front face t, which latter is preferably in a single plane, and a longitudinally extending rib 5 extending from the front face. The backing has formed in its front face and at opposite sides of the rib the recesses or pockets 6 for receiving the cement used in securing the facing to the backing. These recesses are located in the thicker portion of the backing and the bottoms of these recesses are formed with the permanent identification means 7 such as characters for designating the type and size of the backing. These characters are preftt erably raised. so that the cement filling the re cesses may be more easily removed than if the characters were depressed. The characters are also preferably formed during the forging operation and since they are located in the thicker portion of the backing they will not affect the contour of the external surface. Furthermore, the identification means being located at the bottoms of the recesses are not liable to he accidentally destroyed.
By reason of forming the pockets, additional space is provided for cement used in securing the facing to the backing; the weight of the backing with the facing attached thereto approximates more nearly the weight of the natural tooth; the backing more readily conforms to the dies during the forging; and space is provided for identification means. Furthermore, since the identification means is formed in the recesses, this identification means may be formed during the forging operation and does not afiect or distort the external anatomical shape.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a forged standardized backing for use with a standardized interchangeable facing and constructed to form with the facing an artificial tooth, said backing having integral means for attaching the facing thereto and being provided with a recess: in its front face formed during the forging operation and separate from the attaching means, said backing also being provided with permanent identification means within the recess for designating the type and size of said backing.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a forged standardized backing for use with a standardized interchangeable facing and constructed to form with the facing an artificial tooth, said backing having an integral rib for attaching the facing to said backing and being provided with a recess in its front face and at one side of said rib, said backing also having integral raised identification means at the bottom of the recess.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a forged standardized backing for use with a standardized interchangeable facing and constructed to form with the facing an artificial tooth, said backing having an anatomically shaped external surface, a front face substantially in a single plane and an integral rib extending longitudinally from the front face, said backing also having recesses formed in its front face and at opposite sides of said rib and integral raised identification means at the bottoms of the recesses for designating the type and size of said backing.
4. An article of manufacture comprising a forged standardized backing for use with a standardized interchangeable facing and constructed to form With the facing an artificial tooth, said backing having integral means for attaching the facing to said backing and recessed portions in its front face at opposite sides of said attaching means and also integral identification means Within one of the recessed portions, the recessed portions and identification means being formed during the forging of the backing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
