Description

W. F. COCHRANE. DOUBLETREE-SOCKET.
Patented March 7,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron.
WILLIAM F. OOGHRANE, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-TREE SOCKETS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,351. dated March 7, 1876 application filed February 19, 1876.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. COOHRANE, of La Fayette, in the countyof Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Double-Tree Socket for Reapers and Mowers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of l My invention has for its object to provide an improved socket for connecting the doubletree to the draft-pole of a reaper or mower, so
as to dispense with the guide or holding chains, and at the same time afl'ord the necessary 1everage or support for turning the machine.
To this end the invention consists in constructing the socket in two parts, fitting the double-tree and draft-pole, respectively.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the lower portion of the socket, cast with side flanges B to fit over the sides of the draftpole G, as shown, for the purpose of preventing the socket from 'turnin g thereon. The upa per surface of the part A is cast with a central vertical thimble, D, a circular flange, E, concentric therewith, and with two'segments, F F, within the flange upon opposite sides of the thimble. By this means a recess, G, is formed around the thimble, extending laterally to the segments, while between the ends of the latter, in front and rear of the thimble, it extends to the flange and forms the recesses H.
' The upper part I of the socket is also cast with side flangesa ato fit over the doubletree J at an angle with'the part'A, and with a central opening 'to receive the thimble D, which also extends into the double-tree. The under surface of this part I is cast in the form of a flat circular plate to rest upon the circular flange of the part A,'and with a central boss, K, from the front and rear sides of which project the abutments L. The boss and abutments'fit within the recesses G H, and the two parts are pivoted together by a bolt, M, passing upward through the draft-pole, the thimble D, and'the double-tree, its upper end receiving a large nut, N, which is set down firmly against a washer, N, upon the doubletree. The under side of this washer is formed with a short thimble, R, which enters the double-tree and bears upon the upper end of the thimble D to prevent the parts from binding. The recesses H are made, somewhat larger than the abutinents, so that the latter shall have considerable movement therein to permit the necessary oscillations of the (louble-tree. When the latter has turned upon the thimble D a sufflcient distance the abutments strike against the ends of the segments F, and arrest its further 1novernent.-- When,
a a. on its upper face, and a central boss, K,
having abutments L L on its under face, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The part A, having a sleeve, D, in combination with the part I, washer N, having the thimble R on its lower face, and screwbolt M, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
