Description

Jan. 14, 1930. F. NERSEBE SMOKERS ASH RECEPTACLE iled'Feb. 2, 1929 lttmrg Patented Jan. 14, 1930 FRITZ WERSEBE, or Hiram, GERMANY SMOKERS ASE RECEPTAQLE Application filed February 2, 1929, Serial No. 887,151, and in Germany December 14, 1927.
This invention relates to smokers ash receptacles and consists in the provision of a casing formed with a hopper which is normally closed at the bottom by two arcuate, pivotallysupported plates adapted to turn in opposite directions about pivots arranged in the lower part of the casing in the centre of the plate.curvature' for opening and closing the hopper, the plates being arranged relative to overhanging hopper walls so as to be swept by the latter for clearing off the ashes, means being provided for maintaining the plates normally in closed position and for opening out the same by the 1 depression of an operating element.
Fig.1 of the accompanying drawings re resents a vertical section of one form of t e device, A I
Fig. 2', a vertical section of another form, Fig. 3,& section onthe line III III of Fig. V
Fig. 4, a vertical section of a further modification, and a Fig. 5, a'section at right angles to Fig. 4. Theash receptacle comprises a casing 1 the sides 2 of which may either be upright or slanting and adapted to receive advertisements. In the top wall of the casing there is an opening 3 and under the latter thre is h a hopper 4 the bottom of which is normally closed by twoarcuate plates 5 and 6. These plates are supported by arms 9 and 10 which are pivoted .at 8 near the bottom 7 of the casing, the pivots being concentric with the plates. The plates are weighted'by bars 11 which tend to hold them together and keep the hopper closed. The inner edges 12 of the plates are turned up for engagement with the overhanging hopper walls which are adapted to sweep the plates so as to clear them of ashes when the plates are turned back for opening the hopper. For a convenient opening out of the plates, a key 14 is provided the stem of whlch is guided in a sleeve 13' and in a bracket 29 and connected by links 15, 15' to the arms 9 and' 10 so that the'latter will be pressed apart on the depression of the key. A'spring 16 on the key stem tends to raise the key and aids the weights 11 to keep the hopper closed.
in closed legs 19. The match box holder 22 is For discharging the ashesfrom the casing, one slde wall is provided with anaperture whlch is normally closed by a cover 2v fitted with a handle 18. A spring 17 bears against a flange on thecover so as to retain the latter osition. i
The as receptacle is surmounted by a match box support in the form of a platform 20which is carried on the casing by pro-' vlded with two resilient arms 21 and with springs 24 which are formed with nicks 23- for engagement with apertures in the'platform 20. These springs enable the match box holder to be detached from the platform. The holder has also a U-shaped, upwardly directed shackle which is adapted to be inserted into the match box cover. If
this insertion is effected after the end wall of the drawer has been detached, it is pos- 7 sible, after the insertion, to remove the drawer and leave the matches conveniently supported in the cover and in the shackle.
As an alternative, the holder 22 may be adapted for insertion into the match-box cover without the shackle which may then be dis ensed with. he construction s'hewn in Figs. 2 and 3 1s similar to the one already described, the only difference being that the casing is provided with a detachable top cover 27 which is adapted to carry the entire mechanism, the ivots 8 being connected to brackets 28 whic depend from the cover. In this case the cover and the mechanism are removed together from the casing for entering the latter. The cover has a downturn rim 26 which fits over the edge of the casing and whichmay be punched with de ressions 33 for engagement with correspon ing projec- .9 tions on the casing. In addition, a spring catch 32 may be employed for holding the cover normall in position. There are two key stems 31 or operating the plates 5 and 6 and these stems, which are guided in apertures 30 in the cover, are interconnected by a bridge iece 19' which carries the match box hol er.
A suitable arrangement for use in motor cars and the like is shewn in Figs. 4 and 5.
The cover mechanism as in the previous construction,
is connected to a plate 34 whereby 'it is secured either to the dash board or to which carries the entire some other part of the vehicle, the casing.be-
the match box cover and to be detachably secured to said platform.
7. The ash receptacle claimed in claim 2 in combination with a platform, legs support ing said platform on the casing, a match box holder, and nicked supporting springs connected to said holder and adapted to engage in slots in the platform for retaining the holder on the latter. FRITZ WERSEBE.
ing withdrawable from underneath. Spring catches 36, connected to the brackets 28, are
adapted to engage underlshoulders on the casing so as to retain the latter normally in position.
I claim:
1. A smokers ash receptacle comprising a casing formed with a hopper, two arcuate plates adjoining overhanging hopper walls and forming a bottom for the hopper,
ivoted arms supporting said plates in the ower part of the casing so as to allow them to turn in opposite directions about the cen- 5 tre of the curvature for opening and closing the hopper, the plates being arranged relative to the overhanging hopper walls so as to be swept by the latter, means for maintaining the plates normally in closed osiaotion, and an operating element adapte on depression, to 0 en out the plates.
2. A smokers ash receptacle comprising a casing, a detachable cover for said casing provided with a hopper, two arcuate plates adjoining overhangingv hopper walls and forming a bottom for the ho per, a pair of supporting brackets depen ing from the 7 cover, supporting arms for the plates pivoted to said brackets so as to enable the plates to turn in opposite directions about the centre of the curvature for opening and closing the hopper, the plates being arranged relative to the overhanging hopper walls so as to be swept b the latter, means for maintaining the plates normally in closed position, and an operating element linked to said arms and adapted, on depression, to open out the plates.
3 An ash receptacle as claimed in claim 2 wherein the plates are adapted to turn about a common axis from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position.
4. An ash receptacle as claimed in claim 2 and means for fastening the cover to a wall and for locking the casing to the cover.
5. The ash receptacle claimed in claim 2 in combination with a-platform, legs supporting said platform on the casing, and a match box holder detachably mounted on said latform.
