PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ROTOGRAVURE MOUNTING FORMS Filed Oct. 28, 1926 Patented 7, 1930 [UNITED sTA H ERICK LOENING, F BERLIN-WILMERSDORF,GERMANY PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ROTOGRAVURE MOUNTING FOR-MS This invention relates to processes for producing rotogravure mounting forms and aims to provide an improved method of producing such forms.
The production of rotogravure printing cylinders according to present methods takes considerable time and a quicker process has been sought for several years.
7 To the lengthy methods still in general use, there are two especially great objections,
First. The type and illustration (full line and half tone) must be parately mounted, exposed, transferred, co d and etched, and these steps or mounting, exposing, transferring, coating and etching must therefdre be done twice. I
Second. The bordering of the illustrations on the printing cylinder and the covering of all parts which are not to be etched is a difficult and lengthy procedure.
, The attainment of quicker and better results has been sought by first printing the text and illustration on white paper and mounting both parts on white cardboard from which a negative was made and from which latter a diapositive was taken. The parts of this diapositive containing the text were covered with an asphalt lacquer while particular care was exercised not to cover parts thereof containing the illustrations. The uncovered parts oithe diapositive were ,then dyed by a non-actinic dye and the, lacquer was thereafter'washed oil, so that the diapositive was produced containing the text part on a highly transparent ground whereas the transparency of the parts containing the illustrations was more or less reduced 1 1 5;

which contains type and illustration at the same time, which allows the simultaneous exposing, transferring and etching of type and illustration, andalso secures perfect results without bordering and covering the pictures.
This efiect is obtained by at first producing diapositives on films, the transparency of which has-already been. reduced during the manufacturing process. Films may be used wherein either the celluloid substance, or the front or back side thereof has been slightly colored (especially with an inactinic color),
or wherein a specially colored layer has been ,applied thereto.
' After drying, the diapositives produced on such films are cut to the required size and stuck onto the mounting glass in the desired arrangement and at the desired place.
The type is printed on transparent material 79 (e. g. the so-called cellophane) inthc usual way and inserted and fixed between the pictures.
According to this method, a mounting is obtained which is transparent throughout 75 with the exception of the type and illustra; tion. The type and illustration are then. transferred together onto the copper cylinder which need be coated only at such places which show the plain copper and this may be done very easily and quickly. The type and illustration are then etched together and at the same time.
The invention will now be particularly described with reference to the accompanying 35 drawings wherein diagrammatic representations are made by way of example. In said drawings:

In a very diagrammatic manner, Fig. 1 shows a sheet of paper 1 being imprinted in part with types and in part with illustrations. The text-containing parts are denoted by the rectangles 2, 3, 4 in broken outline within which thetype is represented by hori zontal zi -zag lines. Between said text-containing parts, other'rectangles 5, 6 and 7 are shown in full lines representing half-tone illustrations therewithin, the'pictures being indicated by irregular patch lines.
' According to this invention, the text part or type is printed on fully transparent film or thin sheet material, such for example as so--. called cellophane sheets andthe printed text is then cut into pieces 2, 3, corresponding in size to the parts 2, 3, and 4 of Fig. 1, and
these parts are then fixed upon a mounting plate8 in any known manner. p
. Diapositives of the illustrative parts 5, 6 and 7 are separately produced on films by ordinary photographic methods. These film parts 5, 6 and 7', corresponding in size to the parts 5, 6- and 7 of Fig. '1, are made less transparent, being coloured in any desired manner, especially by means of a non-actmic colour. In the illustrated example, it may beunderstood that the film substance (see Fig. Q.) is prepared from a. material which is slightly coloured in its body or substance and bears upon the side the usual gelatin layers or emulsion containing the picture P (see Fig. 4:)

The diapositive rectangles 5, 6, 7 prepared in this manner are now fixed upon the mounting plate 8 i proper relation to the parts 3' and 4L as s own inFi'g. 5 and in this manner a mounting is obtained from which the text and pictures can be directly transferred to the copper cylinder in the usual manner which 'needs no further description or illustration. I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: 1. The method of producing rotogravure -mounting forms for printing of-type with illustrations from photographic films, which consists in printing the type on transparent material and separately preparing and col- 'oring the photographic films of'illustrat-ions with an inactinic color, and then applying the 1 transparent material bearing the type and the colored films bearingthe illustrations onto a mounting glass in the desiredrelation.
