This invention relates to fuses or electrical connecters and has for its object to provide a novel and improved yet eiiicient device for clamping and locking the conductor.
One .of the objects of my invention is to provide a fuse in which a considerable length of the conductor may be clamped and locked to prevent its separation, including provision for locking the bent terminal or end of said conductor.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fuse in which the cap is adapted to simultaneously lock the clamping element to the insulated shell and bind or lock the conductor throughout a portion of its length and the terminal thereof to positively prevent its separation.
To enable others skilled in the art to more fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention, that they may embody the same in the various modifications possible of the elements employed in its construction, drawings depicting a preferred embodiment are annexed hereto as part of my disclosure in which Fig. 1 is a view, partly in section, showing the fuse orv connecter.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a tubular, insulating shell preferably constructed of porcelain, vulcanized rubber or other well known compositions such as bakelite, having opposed grooves 6 adjacent the top of the shell. A conductor clamping element designated in its entirety by numeral 7 and preferably constructed of any suitable resilient metal is provided with a, vertical, tapered slot or recess 8, extending from top to bottom of said element and of a depth somewhat beyond its vertical axis.

The clamping element is further provided with a pair of depending arms 11 having inward extensions 12 adapted to be seated within the opposed grooves of the in- The clamping element 7 is also exteriorly threaded as at 13 for cooperation with the interiorly threaded portion 14 of a locking, shell cap 15 having a bottom, beveled edge 16 for engaging the arms 11 to urge the same within the opposed grooves'6 and at the same time contracting the clamping element and clamp the conductor within the vertical slot or recess 8. The shell cap 15 when threaded on the clamping element also engages the terminal or end 10 of the conductor to lock the same and prevent its separation at this point of the fuse. A slot or groove 17 in the top of the shell cap permits it to be threaded tightly by any suitable instrument.
From the above construction, it will be seen that the interiorly threaded shell cap performs three functions. Due to the resiliency of the metal or material of the clamping. element 7. the lower, beveled edge of the cap forces the depending arms into the grooves of the shell 5. As the result of the contraction of the clamping element 7, that portion of the conductor within the slot or recess 8 is clamped throughout its entire length. As the shell cap is threaded on the clamping element and as the vertical portion of the conductor is locked, the terminal or end of the conductor is further clamped by the inner, top portion of said cap. In the reverse manner, to dissemble the fuse of connecter, as the cap is unthreaded from the clamping element, the slotwill be spread and the conductor may be removed for replacement.
Having shown and described my invention, what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves adjacent one end, a
single contractile conductor clamping element connected to said shell exteriorly thereof and means for simultaneously clamping a conductor passing through the body of the element and locking a portion of said element within the grooves of the shell.
2. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves adjacent one end, a split, contractile element for receiving a conductor within the body thereof and connected to said shell exteriorly thereof and a cap for said shell for simultaneously contracting the split element to clamp the conductor therein and locking the said element within the grooves of the shell.
3. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves adjacent one end thereof, a contractile element having a vertical slot therethrough for receiving a conductor in clamping relation, depending means formed with said element cooperating with the grooves and a cap for simultaneously contracting the said element to lock the conductor within the body thereof and lock the depending means within said grooves of the shell.
A. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves adjacent one end thereof, a contractile element having a vertical slot ther-ethrough for receiving a conductor in clamping relation thereto, said element having an exterior threaded portion and a screw threaded. cap for simultaneously contracting the said element to lock a conductor within the body thereof and lock the lower portion of the said element within the grooves of the shell.
5. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves at on'een'd thereof, a single contractile body having a vertical slot therethrough and depending arms adapted to enter the said grooves and an outer cap for simultaneously clamping a conductor Withinthe said body and locking th'e depend ing arms within'th'egrooves of the shell.
6. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having opposed grooves at one end thereof, a contractile body having a vertical tapered slot therethrough and depending arms adapted to partially enter said grooves, said body being exteriorly threaded and an interiorly threaded cap cooperating with the said threaded body to simultaneously lock a conductor within the slot and the terminal of the said conductor between the said body and cap and also lock the depending arms in the grooves of the shell.
7. A fuse of the class described comprising a shell having grooves, a contractile body having a vertical slot 'therethrough for receiving a conductor therein, said body having depending arms with inward extensions adapted to enter the grooves, said body being exteriorly threaded, and an interiorly threaded cap cooperating with said body, said cap having a bottom, beveled edge for urging the inward extensions of the said arms within the grooves as the cap is threaded on the body and clamp the portion of the conductor within the vertical slot of the contractile body.
