Description

M. J. ENGEL BLADE HOLDER Dec. 31, 1929.
Filed Feb. 4, 1928 i gvvventoz Naurtce dfn ei Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES MAURICE J. ENGEL,
BLADE Application filed February This invention relates to blade holders and more particular to a holder for utilizing old safety razor blades for use in cutting material.
The principal object of the invention resides in a holder especially adapted for conveniently and safely holding a razor blade so as to expose the cutting edge of the blade in a convenient manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature for cutting material in which the user is protected against injury by guarding the cutting edge of the blade with respect to the handle so as to prevent the fingers of the user from coming in contact therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the cutting blade can easily and conveniently be replaced when becoming dull or worn.
Other objects will appear as the disclosure progresses. The drawings are intended merely to indicate a possible embodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the actual needs 5 of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes. It is therefore not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated but rather to define such limits in the appended claims. For a more detailed understanding of the invention attention is now called to the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the blade holder.
Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with the jaws in an open position.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the jaw clamp.
Referring now to the drawings in detail in which like reference characters denote like parts throughout the specification numerals l and 2 designate a pair of flat members welded together at the handle portions 3, and
forming a pair of resilient jaws 4. and 5 at the front for holding the cutting blade 6. The blade is provided with a slot 7 through which PATENT OFFICE HOLDER 4., 1928. Serial No. 251,976.
pass the studs 8 for supporting the blade in lace.
Pivotally fastened to the top of the jaw 4 is a clamp 9 for firmly clamping the two jaws together so as to grip the blades between the jaws. The clamp includes a pair of wall members 10, the space between them being as wide as the thickness of the jaws 4 and 5 plus the thickness of the blade, so when the clamp is in its operative position as shown in the full lines in Fig. l the blade will be tightly gripped in place.
A portion of the jaws 4 and 5 are cut away as at 11 so as to expose the cutting edge of the blade 6. The blade is cut to such shape as to lie within the confines of the jaw members allowing the cutting edge to be exposed through the cut-away portions 11.
In operation the clamp 9 is in the position as shown in the full lines in Fig. 1 when the jaws L and 5 are clamped together. To remove the blade the clamp is lifted as indicated in the dotted lines and the resilient jaws will spread apart as shown in Fig. 2 so as to have access to the blade.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an efficient and simple razor blade holder which is convenient and safe to handle and having means for easily and quickly replacing the blade and means to hold the blade in place without becoming loose.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A blade holder of the class described having a pair of sections welded together at the rear forming a handle, the unwelded portion of the said sections forming a pair of resilient jaws, a pair of studs in one of said sections for supporting a blade, a section of each jaw cut away so partof said blade will be exposed, and a clamp hinged to one of the jaws for clamping said jaws together for firmly holding the blade in place, said clamp including two wall portions for en aging the jialws and front-part of the bla e between t em.
2. A blade holder of the class described composed of two flat sections, one half the length of each section welded together forming a handle, the other half being free and forming resilient jaws, a pair of studs in one of the jaws for supporting a blade, a section of each jaw cut away so part of the blade will be exposed, and a clamp pivotally fastened to the front of one of the jaws adjacent the blade for clamping the jaws together in order to firmly hold the blade in place, said clamp including two wall portions for engaging the jaws and front part of the blade between them.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MAURICE J; ENGEL.
