Description

Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES INA H. VONNEGUT, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA PAPER BOX Application filed May 14, 1928. Serial No. 277,572. i
This invention relates to the construction of a paper box or carton, particularly adapted for containing goods subject to removal from. time to time, such as granular food stligifs, soap flakes, cleaning powder and the li e.
The principal object of the invention is to rovide means on a box of this character which will permit the ready and convenient 1o breaking of the seal for giving access to the contents thereof, and which may be readily and conveniently closed and secured in closed position after a portion of the contents has been removed until such time as it is desired to remove more of the contents therefrom.
The principal feature of the invention resides in the employment of a string or thread having one end secured to one of the closing flaps and extending through the seal so the operation thereof will cause the seal to be broken to permit the opening of the box, and providing a button on one of the flaps about which the string or thread may be wound for securing the flaps in closed position after the seal is broken.
Another feature of the invention resides in the arrangement of the securing thread and button with respect to the inner flaps when the box is sealed, and thereafter interchanging the position of the flaps after the seal is broken and it is desired to close the box by causing the outer seals to extend inwardly and the inner seals, to which the string and button are secured, to lap over the outer flaps and hold them in closed position.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box when sealed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the flaps in open position after the seal is broken. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the box locked and secured in re-closed position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the box showing the development and arrangement of the flaps.
In the drawings there is illustrated a paper box or carton having a front panel 10, a rear panel 11,'and side panels 12 and 13, the bottom. endof the box being closed and sealed by the bottom panels or flaps 1 1. Foldedinwardly fromthe side panel 12 there is an inner flap 15 to which is-secured a button 16.v Folded from the side panel 13 so as to extend. inwardly and. partially overlap the adjacent edge of the flap 15, there is provided a flap 17 to which there is secured a string or thread 18.
Connected with the side panel 11 of the box and folded over so as to extend inwardly therefrom, there is a flap 19, and folded over from the panel 10 so as to cover said flap 19 and provide the complete end panel, there is a cover flap 20 having its edges conforming to the contour of the box.
In the original sealed condition of the box, a paper strip 21 is adhesively secured about the edges of the cover flap 20 with a small portion of the string'18 protruding therein. For opening the box, the string is grasped at one end and pulled about the edges of the cover strip so as to cut the sealing strip 21 and permit the box to be readily opened. Thereupon, after a portion of the contents has been used and it is desired to temporarily secure the box in closed position, the outer flaps 19 and 20 are turned inwardly one over the other and the flaps 15 and 17, which were originally beneath them, are folded over the top so that the string 18 may readily be used for wind ing about the button 16 and thus securing the flaps in closed position.
The invention claimed is:
1. A box of the character described comprising a plurality of flaps folded inwardly at one end thereof, means for originally sealing said flaps in an inwardly-turned position. a button secured to one of said flaps, and a string secured to another of said flaps adapted to act upon the sealing means for permitting the box to be opened and thereafter interlock with said button for removably securing said'flaps in closed position.
2. A box of the character described comprising a pair of inner flaps and a pair of outer flaps adapted to-overlap the inner flaps when said box is in original closed position, a sealing strip for originally sealing said flaps, a button secured to one of said inner flaps, and a string secured to the other inner flap so arranged that said string may be employed to cut the sealing strip for permitting the original opening of the box and thereafter the box may be held in closed position by the outer flaps being positioned on the underside of the inner flaps which thereupon extend over said outer flaps, whereby said string may be interlocked With said button for securing all of said flaps in closed position.
3. A box of the charater described comprising a pair of inner flaps and a pair of outer flaps adapted to overlap the inner flaps When said box is in original closed position, means for originally securing said flaps in closed position and means connected with said inner flaps adapted to be utilized for breaking the original seal and thereaftersecure said inner flaps together over said outer flaps.
In witness whereof; I have hereunto afiixed my signature. x
INA H; VONNEGUT.
