Description
Dec. 31, 1929. F. H. HEADLEY SAND BACK REST Filed July 25, 1927 llllllllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIL Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAND BACK REST Application filed July 25, 1927. Serial No. 208,097.
This invention relates to improvements in sand back rests and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device upon which a person may be comfortably seated with outstretched legs and with the back engaged against a support, upon the sands of a beach or upon a lawn or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which may be folded compactly for carrying about in an associated bag and which device may be readily unfolded and set up for use.
Still another object of the invention isto provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction, light in weight and comfortable in use, and with which may be employed an associated low folding table which straddles a portion of the device above the occupant and in a position most convenient for lunching or for holding reading or writing material.
These objects of the invention as well as others, together with the many advantages thereof, will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved device in unfolded or open position ready for occupancy and with a folding table so arranged with respect to the same as to be in a position most convenient for the occupant.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the device when folded.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a carrying bag for the device and the associated table.
In general my improved device which I have termed a sand back rest because of its especial use at bathing beaches, comprises an elongated flexible rug or mat member and coacting U-shaped braces, one of which is 45 fixed at its closed end, to one end of said member, the corresponding end of the other brace being free from said member, the other and open ends of both said braces being pivoted together and to a back rest supporting 50 bar, whereby said braces may be moved into opposed angular positions to support the back rest in the desired height above said rug or mat member.
Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates an elongated strip of flexible material such as can vas or the like, which has one transverse end portion doubled over and stitched to the remainder as at 2 to form a loop 3 at one end. of said member which when in use is opened out flat in the manner of a rug or mat. As- Y sociated with said member are two U-shaped metallic front and rear back rest supporting braces or members 4 and 5 respectively, the front one longer than the other, but both of substantially the same width which approximates that of the member 1.
The rear supporting member 5 includes side legs 6 6 and a bottom end connecting member 7 which is disposed in the loop 3 of the rug or mat member 1. The front supporting or brace member 4 includes side legs 88 and a bottom end connecting member 9, which is in no manner connected to the rug or mat member. The side legs of the front supporting member 4 are longer than the side legs of the rear supporting member 5 and the top free end of the one leg ofone member is pivotally connected to the like end of the associated leg of the other member'as by a rivet 10.
11 indicates a back rest member which is slightly curved rearwardly and has attached to its rear face, a bar 12, the ends of which are bent rearwardly to provide arms 13, that are likewise pivotallv connected to the top ends of the associated legs 6 and 8 by means of said rivets 1010. V
VVhenthe device is in a position ready for occupancy as in Fig. 1, the rug or mat member 1 is laid out flatand the legs 66 of the rear U-shaped member 5 are inclined forwardly and upwardly and the legs 88 of the U-shaped member 4 are inclined upwardly and rearwardly, in opposition thereto and with the connecting member 9 of said me1nher 4 disposed under the rug or mat member. This angle of inclination may be varied by moving the connecting member 9 toward or away from the connecting member 7 which of course will change the vertical height or position of the back rest 11 with respect to the rug or mat member 1, the said back rest swinging about the arms 18 into that position which will comfortably fit the back of the occupant. I Vhen occupied, the leaning back of the occupant against the back rest will hold the parts against collapse as is apparent; the side legs 8.-8 in no manner interfering with the arm movements of the occupant. The occupant of course sits with outstretched legs extending toward the front end of the rug member and is thus not only protected against direct body contact or engagement with the beach or lawn surface upon which the rug member is disposed but also has a back rest against which to lean when sitting in this otherwise uncomfortable position for any length of time.
In connection with the device described, I find it convenient to employ a small low, folding table indicated as a whole at 14 in Fig. 1. Said table includes a top 15 of a width approximating that of the rug member 1 and U-shaped end legs 16, each so connected at its top with the sides of said top 15 as shown as to be capable of being folded into position against the bottom surface of said table. hen in the position shown in Fig. 1, said table straddles said rug member 1 at a point convenient for and in front of the occupant, with one U-shaped leg on each side of said rug member 1 as shown. Thus the table may be used for lunching or reading and writing purposes.
To fold up the device, the U-shaped braces 4 and 5 respectively are folded into the same plane and the back rest bar then turned downwardly so that the arms 13 of the bar are disposed in the plane of said braces 4 and 5 after which the rug member 1 may be folded about the folded braces and back rest as shown in Fig. 3.
Said device'when folded, together with the folded table, may be brought together to form a flat bundle which may be readily stowed in a bag 17 as shown in Fig. 4 so as to be easily carried about. On opposite sides of the carrying bag I provide loop handles 18 and one of said bundles may be passed through the other to hold said bag in its closed position.
The device is indeed comfortable in use, may be easily set up and taken down, is light in weight and may be stowed 1n but a small space when disposed in the carrying bag.
While in describing my invention, I have referred in detail to the form and arrangement of the parts thereof, the same is to be considered as by way of illustration only so that I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claims.
ing therein, a flexible rug member having a loop at one end, a U shaped member having side legs and a bottom connecting member which is disposed in said loop, a second U shaped member also including side legs and a bottom connecting member, which legs are pivotally connected to the like legs of the first U shaped member and which last mentioned connecting member is adapted to be disposed under said rug when the same is in its extended position, a back rest member and a bar to which said back restmember is fixed, said bar including end arms connected to said legs coincident with the point of pivotal connection between said legs.
2. A device of the kind described comprising front and rear U shaped members each including side bars and a bottom crossbar, a
back rest supporting member disposed between the top ends of said side bars and to which said side bars are pivotally connected .so that said U shaped members may be swung into relative angular positions to provide support the one for the other, and a rug member fixed to the cross bar of the rear U shaped member and adapted to be extended over the cross bar of the front U shaped member to cover the same and prevent movement thereof when said rug is occupied.
3. A device of the kind described comprising front and rear U shaped members each including side bars and a bottom crossbar, a back rest supporting member disposed between the top ends of said side bars and to which said side bars are pivotally connected so that said U sh aped members may be swung into relative angular positions to provide support the one for the other, anda rug member having a loop at one end enclosing the cross bar of the rear U shaped member and adapted to be extended over the cross bar of the front U shaped member to cover the same and prevent movement thereof when said rug is occupied. e
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 14th day of July, 1927.
FREDERICK HAGGER HEADLEY.
