UNITED STATES JOHN L. MCATREE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
ASSIGNCR TO SCOVILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, AKCORIORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
VANrrY Box.
`Application filed January 16, 1926. Serial No. 81,650.
rllhis invention relates to certain improvements in vanity boxes or cases. f
These vanity cases are small boxes largely used by ladies for carrying` cosmetics, such as rouge, powder, lipsticks and the like. It is desirable in this type of box that the case be as small as possible to carry the required cosmetics, and which shall be thin and of attractive appearance. These cases generally include a body and cover that are pivotally associated and, to improve the appearance of the box, it is very desirable that the hinge or pivot by which the parts are united should be invisible, particularly when the box is'closed. f
The particular object of the present invention is to produce a box of this character which shall be small, relatively thin, and in which the cover and body are so united that the hinge or pivot is entirely concealed when the box is closed. i
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction for holding the hinge in position in the box after assembly. n
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved box which may be thin and which at the same time may be used for two kinds of cosmetics and a lipstick.
lVith these and other objects not specifi cally referred to, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features'pointe'd out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In these drawings,
Figure 1 is a top view of the improved box closed;
Figure 2 is a side lview of the same;
Figure 3 is a tace view of the box open;
Figure 4 is a sectional view, partly broken away, the section being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the ,box shown in its open position, the section being taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and
Figure 6 is a face view of a modified form of box, the box being shown in its open position.
Referring now to these drawings, the particular box shown includes a body 1 and a cover 2. The body is formed with a side wall 3 and this side wall is turned in at the top to form a continuous peripheral top flange or rim 4, as shown in Fig. 1.
Pivotally associated with this body is the cover 2, this cover being provided with a depending flange 6 which sungly fits within the peripheral flange 4 of the body. s shown if in Fig. 1, the cover is or may be provided with a finger catch 6 by which the parts may be separated.
It will be seen, referring toFig. 1, that when the box is closedno part of the hinge or pivot by which the parts are associated shows, a smooth continuous surface being provided entirely around the box. The invention includes a hinge or pivot of imi proved construction which is so arranged and assembled that it is entirely concealed within the flanges of the body and the cover, so that a box as shown Ain Fig. 1 may be produced. While this hinge may be of various characters and formed in various Ways, in the particular construction illustrated this hinge is a U-shaped piece of spring wire 7 which fits around three sides of the cover of the box, being dimensioned to snugly litV within the flange. This wire is U-shaped and at the open end of the U the ends of the wire are slightly bent or turned to form short legs 8, 9, which act as the pintle of the hinge. These legs take bearing in notches 10 in an internal strip 11 which is secured inside the flange 4 of the body 1, this strip extending around the body and forming a seat for the flange 6 of the cover,- the flanges having frictional engagement with each other.
The spring wire is held in position and is concealed in any suitable manner. In the particular construction illustrated, the cover is provided with a mirror 12, this mirror being dimensioned to snugly fit in the cover between the legs of the wire .hinge so that when this mirror is put in place it acts to spread the legs of the wire and hold them in the liange 11 of the body. The wire may be concealed and the parts further held in place by means of a bezel 13 which is snapped into position in the cover, as shown in Fig. 3, this bezel acting to hold the parts together and concealing the wire hinge.
Boxes embodying the invention will include means for holding one or more cosmetics.V In the particular construction shown, a two part box is illustrated, having a powder compartment 14 and a small rouge compartment 15.' lChe powder and' rouge may be held in these compartments in any suitable manner. As shown, they Will be carried by trays 16, 17. These trays are preferably separated by a partition 18 formed of a strip of metal which is held in position b-y being sprung into notches form-ed in the flange strip 11, before referred to, and the trays may be removably held in position by cutting out projections 18 from the metal of the flange' strip 11, as shown in` Fig. 5. 1t Will, of course, be understood that, if desired', a one compartment box may be provided, in Which' case the compartment' 15 may be omitted. In Fig. 6 a tvvo compartment box having means for carrying a lipstick is shown. lWhere such a box is desired, th-e powder and rouge do not occupy the Whole of the body, butl a space 19 is left for the receptiony of a lipstick Which may be carried in a recess 20 formed in the cover, the mirror in this modified form of box not occupying the Whole of the cover. lilith this construction a' lipstick can rest partly in the recess- 19 and partly inthe recess 20 when the box is clos-ed, so that a lipstick can be used with a. very thin box.
While the box has been shown andv described in its preferred form, it Will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific structure shown, and the invention, therefore, is not to be limit-ed exactly to the box shown.
llVlr'at l claim is:
l. In a case of the character described, the combination of a rectangular body having a side Wall the upper edges of which are turned in to form a continuous peripheral topxflange or rim, a rectangular cover having a depending flange and arrangedv whenclosed to lit the space Within the rim, and a pivot uniting the parts frictionally held by the rim and flange so as to be invisible When the box is closed.
2. In a case of the character described, the combination of a rectangular body having a side Wall the upper edges of Which are turned' in to form a continuous periphspring Wire supported in the cover and having legs engaging under the rim ofthe body for pivotally uniting the body and cover, and means for holding the Wire in assembled position.
ll. In a' case of the character described,
the combination of a rectangular body having an. inturned flange or rim, a holding strip located Within the rim, a cover having a depending flange, a iJ-shaped spring Wir-e located Within the flange of the cover and having` legsengaging the holding strip for pivotally uniting the bodyv and cover,
and means for springing the legs of the Wire into engagement with the holding strip.
5. In a case of the character described,l
the combination of a body, a cover having a depending flange, a spring Wire located in the cover and having legs engaging with the body for pivotally uniting the body and cover, a mirror in the cover dimensioned' to cause the engagement of the springv with the cover, and a bezel for holding the mirror in place. l
f3. Inia case of the character described, the combination of a body having an i-nturned peripheral top flange, a cov-er having a de- .pending flange, a spring Wire loca-tedx Within the flange of the cov-er and having outwardly turned ends, a holding strip in the body with Which the ends of the Wire engage for pivotally uniting the body and cover, projections struck out from the holdiing strip, and a compact carrying member frictionally held by the projections.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. .l
JOHN L. MOATREE.
